Atop the mountain of fire, a beautiful dragon was born. He had large, expressive eyes—as tender as a little bird’s—and was truly unique, with iridescent red scales that seemed to capture the sun’s rays. He possessed sharp teeth, a piercing gaze, and skin as tough as the armor of a rocky armadillo. He had beautiful wings meant for future flight and legs ending in greenish claws!

That dragon grew up between the forest and the mountain, hidden amidst the wild undergrowth and great, ancient trees. Though fierce in appearance, no one dared approach, for its presence commanded awe.

But although he was a dragon of fierce appearance, he had practically been born and raised all on his own, eating whatever he came across. One day, while munching on some delicious apples, he gazed up at the sky and marveled at the beautiful canopy of stars; he was utterly fascinated. As he walked, his attention wandered, and—*crunch, crack, crunch*—he snapped a branch, stumbled clumsily over the root of an old tree, and cried out in pain. What a nasty spill he’d taken! He rubbed his leg, trying to recover from the heavy blow. «Ouch, ouch, ouch,» he sighed, falling silent for a few moments—until suddenly, he heard the sound of flapping wings right next to his ear. He turned this way and that, seeing nothing but a few bronze-colored feathers drifting down near him.

He stood perfectly still, closing his eyes in an attempt to control the fear he felt, until silence finally fell. He let out a sigh. When he opened his eyes, he found himself staring into another pair of eyes; he was stunned and left speechless.

¡Hola! ¿Estas bien? ¿Te has roto algo? ¡je, je, je! Ya te hice muchas preguntas y ninguna me has contestado.

«Hello! Are you alright? Did you break anything? Heh, heh, heh! I’ve asked you so many questions, yet you haven’t answered a single one. Hello—I live here; I’m an owl. I won’t hurt you. Are you hungry?» Blinking slowly as he watched him, the owl finally flew to a nearby branch. «I’ll ask you one last question: do you have a name?»

No, no tengo nombre.

Finally, the dragon—who was gradually warming up to the forest guardian and beginning to feel at ease—replied, «No, I don’t have a name.»

The owl continued, «Oh, I know! I’ll call you Draco.» The dragon liked the name and smiled; then he replied, «And I’ll call you Buku—Buku.» Both of them burst out laughing. Draco the dragon felt sleepy and yawned, falling asleep right there beneath the branch where Buku sat. Before drifting off, he asked, «Buku, do you think I’ll ever be able to fly?» And then he fell asleep.

Very early the next morning in that forest clearing, the owl—still wide awake—roused Draco. «Come on, get up before the sun comes fully up. Come, let’s practice; you weren’t born to stay on the ground—you were born to conquer the stars. Come on, believe in yourself! You can do it; I know you can! You were born to fly.» As he offered advice with affection and great patience—giving him flying lessons every day—Draco was happy. He had a friend and a teacher who never mocked him when he stumbled over his own feet or got tangled in his massive wings.

At first, the dragon would just take little hops—*hee, hee, hee*—and then slightly higher ones, though sometimes he would fall again. He would wonder, «What if I wasn’t born to fly?» but then he would shake the thought away. He never complained; he saw how hard his friend was trying to teach him something more than just flying: how to believe in himself. Buku would always say, «Cheer up, champ! You were born to fly!» He offered his help with simple sincerity, understanding that learning is a matter of wanting it enough. But one night was different; the full moon was shining in all its glory. With his friend’s help, the dragon finally let go of all his fears, and after a few hops…

Magic took hold! Confidently, he spread his wings; gazing at the moon, he launched himself upward. From his brave heart, he flapped his majestic wings and—right before his friend Buku’s eyes—lifted off the ground in an extraordinary way. He had truly learned to fly—and what a sight it was! That great red dragon seemed to reach the moon and the stars; he was overjoyed!

Buku didn’t even blink; instead, tiny droplets welled up in his eyes—tears of pure joy. He was so happy. «Look at him, just look at him! That’s Draco, the red dragon—my son!» he said with great pride.

That dragon—with his bright eyes, reddish scales, and greenish legs—never forgot him. «I love you, Buku!» he would call out from among the stars.

On full-moon nights, Draco can be seen flying happily, surrounded by his friends the stars, yet he never forgets where he comes from. He is often seen in the forest clearing, chatting with his dear owl, Buku—the one who taught him to fly.
