A LAS MADRES QUE ESTÁN… Y A LOS HIJOS QUE TODAVÍA ESTÁN A TIEMPO

TO THE MOTHERS WHO ARE STILL THERE… AND TO THE CHILDREN WHO ARE STILL IN TIME

A reflection by Graciela Melussi Molina on Mother’s Day in Argentina

There are words that are born from pain, pass through absence, and ultimately become a message of love for others.

On the occasion of Mother’s Day in Argentina, Graciela Melussi Molina—a producer at HOLA MUNDO GLOBAL MEDIA for the acclaimed program *Momentos para Compartir* (Moments to Share)—offers a reflection that transcends borders. It is an intimate testimony about love, absence, forgiveness, and those conversations we should not put off until tomorrow—a message for all mothers and all children, regardless of the country in which they reside.

Drawing from her own personal story, Graciela invites us to look beyond past mistakes, to understand that both mothers and children are human beings—each with their own wounds, fears, and lessons yet to be learned. She reminds us that forgiveness does not mean justifying everything, nor does it require us to abandon our own personal boundaries.

Her message is not intended to pass judgment on any family’s history, but rather to create a space for reflection, understanding, and connection. After all, not every bond is simple, not every wound can be healed, and not every embrace is possible. Yet, when the opportunity to speak, listen, and understand still exists, it may well be worth the effort.

At the World Press Agency, we share these words as a tribute to the mothers who remain by our side, to those who live on forever in our memories, and to all the children who still have the chance to transform love, distance, or differences into an opportunity to build something new. There are words that should not be left for tomorrow, embraces that should not be postponed, and conversations that deserve to take place while we can still look one another in the eye.

Today, we give voice to Graciela and to this message: to love also means learning to understand one another, while continuing to take care of ourselves.

TO THE MOTHERS WHO ARE STILL THERE… AND TO THE CHILDREN WHO ARE STILL IN TIME

My mother left on a day I will never be able to forget: my birthday, at the very same hour I had come into this world. She spent forty days in the hospital—a period during which, in a way perhaps only the two of us could truly understand, we grew profoundly close. Yet, when she passed, there were things left unresolved between us: words left unsaid, moments we can never reclaim, and embraces I would give anything to be able to offer her once more.

As the years go by, my mother’s presence continues to be felt. For there are presences that do not require a physical body to be by our side, nor a voice to remind us how much we long to hear them again.

And, in time, I came to understand something I would like to share this Mother’s Day: a mother can make mistakes. She may unintentionally cause hurt, make decisions we do not understand, or struggle to love in the specific way her children need. But she is also a human being—with her own personal history, her own sorrows and fears, and the right to change.

We, as children, also make mistakes. We grow, we look back at the past from a different perspective, and sometimes, we come to understand—all too late—things we couldn’t see before.

That is why we shouldn’t wait until the end of the road to reach out. Let’s not allow pride to rob us of an embrace, let a single argument turn into years of estrangement, or let the need to be «right» prevent us from truly listening. Some things deserve to be discussed; some wounds require time to heal; and some differences can cease to drive us apart once we learn to see the other person with a bit more humanity.

Forgiveness does not mean justifying everything, nor does it mean forgetting what caused us pain. It means understanding that no one is defined solely by their mistakes, and that we all deserve the chance to change. At times, forgiveness also means setting boundaries—without letting resentment dictate the course of our lives.

Not every relationship between a mother and her child is easy. Not every embrace is possible, and not every wound can be mended. Yet, when there is still an opportunity to talk, to listen, to acknowledge a mistake, or to reach out a hand, let us not squander it by waiting for the «perfect» moment.

Because one day—though we may prefer not to think about it—the time may come when we can no longer call our mother, ask for an explanation, share what hurt us, or tell her how much we have changed.

And in that moment, we will realize that there are conversations that time cannot bring back.

Sra. Molina

Today, I continue to speak to my mother from that place where love endures—even with all that was left unsaid or unresolved. If there is one lesson I hope her absence teaches me, it is this: we should not wait until we have lost someone to discover that, behind their mistakes, there was a human being who deserved to be heard.

This Mother’s Day, let us embrace while we still can. Let us listen before we judge. Let us talk before we drift apart. Let us learn to forgive, while still taking care of ourselves.

It is not because a mother is always right, nor because a child should keep their feelings to themselves; rather, it is because life is too fragile to turn every disagreement into a final goodbye.

And if your mother is still with you, perhaps you don’t need an extraordinary gift today. A sincere conversation, a question you never felt brave enough to ask, a moment of forgiveness that both of you need, or an embrace free of reproach—that might be enough.

Do not wait until you miss her to truly understand her. Do not wait until it is too late to tell her the things she can still hear.

I can no longer hug my own mother the way I would like to. But I can ensure that our shared experiences—even the things left unresolved—become a message for those who still have that opportunity.

Because love does not always arrive in time to mend the past. Yet, as long as we are here, it can still teach us to build something different.

Happy Mother’s Day—even to those who are no longer with us. And may it never be too late to learn how to love one another better.
