Cinema: Tom Cruise’s *The Mummy* — a good film doomed by its own name.

COLUMNISTA
Can a good film fail because it has the wrong title?
Can an interesting story end up buried under the weight of another one that won over audiences eighteen years earlier?
¡Pues parece que sí!
Well, it seems so!
In 2017, Universal Pictures decided to resurrect one of its most iconic monsters: The Mummy. This time, the lead would be Tom Cruise, joined by Sofia Boutella, who played Princess Ahmanet.
The premise was intriguing: a dark tale, steeped in curses, vengeance, supernatural powers, and a threat beyond human control.
Personalmente, me encantó aquella película.
Personally, I loved that film—so much so that I believe I saw it twice in the theater.
¡Y la volvería a ver!
And I would watch it again!
However, many viewers did not greet the production with the same enthusiasm.
¿Por qué?
Why?
Because, in my view, Universal made a fundamental error: they presented a different kind of story under a name that the audience already associated with a completely different cinematic experience.
De Boris Karloff a Brendan Fraser / From Boris Karloff to Brendan Fraser
In 1932, Boris Karloff starred in *The Mummy*, a film that was part of the golden age of classic horror.
Those monsters didn’t need grand explosions or endless chases to inspire fear. A single glance, a desecrated tomb, a curse, and an unsettling atmosphere were enough.
Decades later, in 1999, Brendan Fraser starred in a new version of *The Mummy*.
¡Y aquello fue una aventura extraordinaria!
And what an extraordinary adventure that was!
The film blended humor, romance, archaeology, action, mystery, and horror. Fraser played Rick O’Connell with a charming charisma, supported by characters who won over the audience.
Its success paved the way for a film series that remained etched in the public’s memory.
Eighteen years later, along came Tom Cruise. But there was a problem.
El público todavía recordaba a Brendan Fraser.
The audience still remembered Brendan Fraser.
The 2017 version did not aim to tell the exact same story.
Tom Cruise played Nick Morton, a man who becomes entangled in an ancient Egyptian curse.
Princess Ahmanet was not merely a resurrected creature; she represented a supernatural threat capable of altering the fate of anyone who crossed her path.
The film featured a colder, more sinister, and darker atmosphere, while also incorporating plenty of action sequences.
Its conclusion opened up a fascinating possibility: Morton ends up transformed into a being bound to malevolent powers, yet he retains the will to use them to save others.
¡Ahí había material para una continuación extraordinaria!
There was the makings of an extraordinary sequel there!
A man possessed of dark powers, condemned to coexist with a supernatural force, yet capable of battling other creatures like himself.
¿Acaso no merecía desarrollarse aquella historia?
Didn’t that story deserve to be explored further?
Ahora imaginemos algo. ¿Qué habría sucedido si Universal hubiese estrenado aquella película bajo el título La maldición de Ahmanet? ¿O quizás El elegido de Set?
What if Universal had released that film under the title *The Curse of Ahmanet*? Or perhaps *The Chosen of Set*?
Audiences would have encountered a standalone story, without necessarily expecting the adventures of Rick O’Connell.
They wouldn’t have felt the need to look for Brendan Fraser in every scene or constantly compare two entirely different cinematic visions.
After all, the classic horror of Boris Karloff, the fantasy-adventure of Brendan Fraser, and the supernatural horror-action blend of Tom Cruise are all distinct things.
Las tres propuestas podían coexistir.
All three approaches could have coexisted.
There was no need to sacrifice one to justify the existence of another.
Cuatrocientos millones que no garantizaron el éxito / Four hundred million that did not guarantee success
The film grossed approximately $410 million worldwide.
Its production budget has been estimated at between $125 million and $195 million, depending on the source. To this, one must add the costs of promotion and distribution.
Some estimates place the project’s losses between $60 million and $95 million.
How could a film that grossed over $400 million end up with losses?
Because not all the money from ticket sales goes to the film studios. Movie theaters retain a portion, while production and promotional costs must be recouped
Consequently, a massive box-office haul does not guarantee a massive profit.
Universal intended to launch its «Dark Universe»—a shared universe featuring classic monsters.
Pero aquel ambicioso proyecto terminó abandonado.
But that ambitious project was ultimately abandoned.
And with it, the possibility of continuing Nick Morton’s story vanished.
¿Fracasó la película o fracasó la estrategia? / Did the film fail, or did the strategy fail?
Aquí está mi reflexión.
Here are my thoughts.
I actually liked Tom Cruise’s *The Mummy*. I found it an interesting, entertaining film with the potential to develop a much broader story.
I don’t believe it’s necessary to disparage one production in order to acknowledge the greatness of another.
Brendan Fraser fue extraordinario en su papel. Su saga conquistó generaciones.
Brendan Fraser was extraordinary in his role; his series captivated generations.
Tom Cruise presentó otro personaje, otra atmósfera y otra interpretación del monstruo sobrenatural.
Tom Cruise presented a different character, a different atmosphere, and a different take on the supernatural monster.
¿Era obligatorio compararlos?
Was it really necessary to compare them?
Wouldn’t it have been fairer to let each story breathe on its own?
Of course, a different title wouldn’t have automatically solved the script’s issues or guaranteed commercial success.
But perhaps it would have allowed audiences to go into the theater with different expectations.
Cinema has a unique quality: not every film that fails commercially is bad, and not every film that rakes in millions becomes a memorable work.
Some productions need time to find their audience.
And some stories deserve a second chance. In my opinion, Tom Cruise’s *The Mummy* was one of them.
A dark, unconventional film, featuring a protagonist who ends up transformed into a supernatural creature capable of using evil to fight evil.
Una propuesta que pudo continuar desarrollándose.
It was a concept that could have continued to evolve.
But Universal wanted to resurrect one franchise, and in doing so, they ended up burying the potential of another. Because, perhaps, the true curse of that film didn’t lie in Ahmanet’s tomb.
Estaba en su propio título.
It lay in its own title.
