Adiós a Antonio Pippo Pedragosa.

Farewell to Antonio Pippo Pedragosa: Tango loses one of its great writers, and the World Press Agency mourns.

A posthumous tribute to a radio man, entertainment entrepreneur, journalist, media executive, editorialist, writer, thinker, and tireless guardian of the legacy of tango.

There are days when a routine is broken, and one does not yet know why.

Este miércoles ocurrió eso.

That is what happened this Wednesday.

Over seven and a half years—seven years that forge a history, a bond, a routine, and an affection that cannot be captured in a biographical sketch—Antonio Pippo Pedragosa had turned his columns into a familiar presence at the World Press Agency. Three weekly installments. Three encounters with his thoughts, his memories, his culture, and that unique way he had of looking at the world.

That is why, when his columns didn’t arrive this Wednesday, something inside me felt uneasy.

No era simplemente que faltara un artículo.

It wasn’t simply that an article was missing.

Faltaba Antonio.

Antonio was missing.

For a moment, I thought about her age, the passage of time, and that phrase one never wants to utter: someday, we will receive bad news.

La noticia llegó unas horas después.

The news arrived a few hours later.

At 3:16 a.m., a message from her granddaughter Fiorella shattered any remaining hope:

“Hola Cristina, mi abuelo falleció hoy”.

“Hi Cristina, my grandfather passed away today.”

Y entonces aquel silencio tuvo nombre.

And then, that silence had a name.

Antonio se había ido.

Antonio was gone.

Y duele.

And it hurts.

It hurts because, over the course of seven years, a person can cease to be merely a colleague and—almost without realizing it—become part of an institution’s daily life, as well as the lives of the people who build it.

Antonio era parte de nuestra casa.

Antonio was part of our home.

With his/her temperament

Con sus discusiones.

With his arguments.

Con sus opiniones firmes.

With his strong opinions.

With that distinctive temperament of a man who didn’t need anyone else to share his views in order to speak his mind.

Era, sí, un poco cascarrabias a veces,,,.

He was, admittedly, a bit of a curmudgeon at times…

And that is precisely why we came to love him, too. A true gentleman.

Because behind that strong personality lay a man of immense culture and passion—generous with his knowledge and deeply in love with culture.

Antonio Pippo Pedragosa was involved in communication even before becoming a journalist.

He was the son of a radio broadcaster. Radio was part of his personal landscape, his memories, and his understanding of communication.

Pero Antonio no fue solamente periodista.

But Antonio was not just a journalist.

He was an impresario and moved in the same circles as tango artists; he knew the stages, musicians, singers, stories, personalities, and episodes that rarely appear in books.

That is why, when he spoke of tango, he did not speak from the distance of someone who merely listens to records.

Antonio conocía el tango por dentro.

Antonio knew tango from the inside.

He knew its origins, its key figures, its transformations, its voices, its instruments, its stories, and even its silences.

Together, we traversed a map of tango that knew no borders.

Buenos Aires.

Montevideo.

París.

Madrid.

Nueva York.

And so many other places where a bandoneón, a voice, and a story managed to prove that tango was never solely Argentine or Uruguayan.

El tango se hizo universal.

Tango became universal.

Y Antonio sabía por qué.

And Antonio knew why.

La Aventura del Tango

The Tango Adventure

Among all the stories he leaves behind, there is one that will always hold a special meaning for me.

For years, Antonio would send me his writings on tango. I would read them and find in them a continuity, a sequence—an extraordinary archive of knowledge.

Hasta que un día se lo dije:

Until one day, I told him:

“Antonio, tienes un libro. Estás escribiéndolo por entregas. Hazlo”.

“Antonio, you have a book here. You’re writing it in installments. Do it.”

Y así nació una idea.

And so, an idea was born.

I had a title for it that I considered perfect for what I was building, and I gave it to him: *The Tango Adventure*.

Antonio took those pages, those stories, those memories, and that passion, and turned the columns into a book.

Lo publicó.

He published it.

Lo vendió.

He sold it.

And that title, born of a conversation, ended up becoming part of his body of work.

Later came another facet of his writing with *Relatos Reales* and *Relatos Imaginados*, where his literary imagination reached extraordinary heights.

Antonio did something particularly difficult: he would step into a literary work and ask himself what a given character might have said, done, or thought; what different path a story might have taken; or what lay hidden between the lines.

And before that, through *El Pensador*, he revealed the Antonio who observed the world of politics.

Con inteligencia.

With intelligence.

Con ironía.

With irony.

Con una mirada ideológica definida.

With a clear ideological perspective.

Sin disfrazar sus convicciones.

Without disguising his convictions.

As a true man of thought, Antonio did not write to please.

Escribía para decir.

He wrote to speak his mind.

And that—in times when so many prefer to remain silent so as not to cause discomfort—is also a form of courage.

Perhaps there is no better way to bid Antonio farewell than by letting the tango speak.

For if the silence weighs heavy today, if this absence hurts, if the heart asks why, we can only say:

¡Qué noche tan triste!

What a sad night!

Today, it seems the tables have turned.

And from some corner of time, someone says to us:

¡Adiós, muchachos!

Goodbye, boys!

The one who knew the story behind every beat is gone.

The one who knew that a whole lifetime could fit into *Por una cabeza*.

The one who understood that *Mi noche triste* was not merely a song, but a way of naming absence.

The one who taught us to listen in a different way is gone.

A mirar detrás de una letra.

To look beyond the lyrics.

To discover the life of the songwriter behind the melody.

To understand that *Volver* means not only returning, but also reclaiming memory.

Hoy el bandoneón parece llorar.

Today, the bandoneon seems to weep.

Hoy La Cumparsita suena distinta.

Today, *La Cumparsita* sounds different.

Hoy el café tiene una silla vacía.

Today, there is an empty chair at the café.

And somewhere in our memories, we are still waiting for his column to arrive.

Todavía esperamos sus palabras.

We are still waiting for his words.

Todavía imaginamos a Antonio preparando El Pensador, pensando qué decir, qué discutir, qué cuestionar.

We still picture Antonio preparing *El Pensador*, pondering what to say, what to debate, what to question.

We are still waiting for *La Aventura del Tango* to appear with a new story.

Pero esta vez no llegará.

But this time, it will not come.

Porque Antonio ha comenzado otra aventura.

Because Antonio has embarked on another adventure.

Una que ninguno de nosotros conoce.

One that none of us knows.

And perhaps—who knows?—wherever the greats of tango are, someone has already set a table for him.

Tal vez estén Gardel, Troilo, Discépolo, Manzi, Piazzolla y tantos otros.

Perhaps Gardel, Troilo, Discépolo, Manzi, Piazzolla, and so many others are there.

Tal vez alguien le pregunte:

Perhaps someone will ask him:

—¿Y usted qué hace aquí?

«And what are you doing here?»

Y Antonio, con esa seguridad tan suya, responda:

And Antonio, with that characteristic confidence of his, will reply:

—Vengo a contarles algunas cosas que todavía no saben.

«I’ve come to tell you a few things you don’t know yet.»

Porque así era él.

Because that was the kind of man he was.

A man who always had a story to tell.

For years, Antonio received GRAND AWARDS—our most significant honors, decided by an international public vote.

And for years, true to his character, he didn’t seem to attach much importance to the awards.

No los necesitaba.

He didn’t need them.

Su obra hablaba por él.

His work spoke for itself.

Pero este año ocurrió algo diferente.

But this year, something different happened.

Fue galardonado nuevamente con el GRAND AWARDS.

He was once again honored with a GRAND AWARD.

Y esta vez sí lo mostró.

And this time, he did show it.

Lo compartió.

He shared it.

He brought it to that vast legion of followers who had accompanied his work for so many years.

Perhaps without realizing it, that gesture took on a special significance.

Porque fue uno de sus últimos reconocimientos.

For it was one of his final forms of recognition.

And because, this time, Antonio allowed that recognition to travel with him to his people.

Y esta frase duele especialmente.

And this sentence hurts especially.

Hoy era jueves.

Today was Thursday.

And today it was time to publish a new installment of Real Tales or Imaginary Tales.

Pero este Pensador ya no escribirá.

But this Thinker will no longer write.

No habrá una nueva columna.

There will be no new column.

No habrá otro texto enviado desde Uruguay.

There will be no further text sent from Uruguay.

No habrá otro mensaje con sus palabras.

There will be no other message containing his words.

Quedarán los que escribió.

What remains are the things he wrote.

Quedarán sus libros.

His books remain.

Quedará su voz.

His voice remains.

Quedarán sus historias.

His stories remain.

Quedará su conocimiento.

His knowledge remains.

Y quedará algo todavía más importante:

And something even more important remains:

la memoria de haberlo conocido.

the memory of having known him.

At the World Press Agency, today we are not merely saying goodbye to a contributor.

We are saying goodbye to a companion on a seven-year journey.

A un hombre que nos enseñó tango.

To a man who taught us tango.

Que nos acercó a la historia.

Who brought us closer to history.

Que nos hizo pensar.

Who made us think.

Que nos hizo discutir.

Who made us debate.

Que nos hizo aprender.

Who made us learn.

And who, with his three weekly columns, achieved something not all writers manage to do:

hacerse esperar.

making people look forward to his words.

Antonio, querido amigo:

Antonio, dear friend:

Hoy estamos tristes.

Today we are sad.

Muy tristes.

Very sad.

But as long as a radio is playing, as long as someone puts on a tango, as long as a bandoneón breathes again, as long as someone reads *La Aventura del Tango*, as long as another discovers *El Pensador* or opens *Relatos Reales y Relatos Imaginados*, a part of you will remain here.

Porque hay personas que se van.

Because there are people who leave.

And there are people who, after leaving, become a memory.

Tú ya eres memoria, Antonio.

You are already a memory, Antonio.

Pero también eres legado.

But you are also a legacy.

And as long as tango continues to tell stories of love, life, nostalgia, encounters, and farewells, we will find you again.

Quizá una noche cualquiera.

Perhaps on any given night.

Quizá en una vieja canción.

Perhaps in an old song.

Quizá en una página.

Perhaps on a page.

Perhaps at that moment when someone hears a bandoneon and thinks that tango is telling them something they didn’t yet know.

Entonces sabremos que eres tú.

Then we’ll know it’s you.

Y podremos decir:

And we will be able to say:

Adiós, muchachos.

Goodbye, boys.

Hasta siempre, Antonio.

Farewell, Antonio.

The World Press Agency is in mourning.

El tango está de luto.

The tango world is in mourning.

Pero tu aventura…

But your adventure…

tu Aventura del Tango continúa.

your Tango Adventure continues.

And by the time I publish this tribute, it will not be merely a posthumous article. It will be a way of telling Antonio:

“Te leímos. Te escuchamos. Te aprendimos. Te quisimos. Y no te vamos a olvidar.”

“We read you. We listened to you. We learned from you. We loved you. And we will not forget you.”
