After 60: When life stops asking for permission

COLUMNISTA
There comes an age when we stop counting the years and start counting the stories.
Turning sixty arrives, and for many, it feels like a threshold—a number society insists on associating with aging, limitations, and the idea that it is «too late.» It is as if, after sixty, the only thing left to do is look back.
But what if it were exactly the opposite? What if turning sixty wasn’t the end of a chapter, but the beginning of one of the most authentic phases of our lives?
After sixty, we no longer need to prove to anyone who we are. We have learned that not every battle is worth our energy, that not everyone deserves a place in our lives, and that peace of mind is far more valuable than always being right. By this age, we have accumulated losses, disappointments, joys, loves, farewells, triumphs, and failures alike. We have wept for those who are no longer with us and learned to smile, even through scars that still ache.
And perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of aging: understanding that our scars do not make us weak; they tell the story of everything we were able to overcome.
After sixty, we begin to view time in a different light.
Ya no queremos vivir para complacer.
Queremos vivir.
We no longer want to live to please others. We want to live. We want meaningful conversations, sincere hugs, friends who stay, trips—however small—books that make us dream, music that brings back memories, and moments that don’t need to be posted online to be important. We learn that saying “no” doesn’t make us bad people. That walking away from what hurts us isn’t selfish. That there is no age limit on starting over. And that dreams don’t have an expiration date, either.
We learn that saying “no” doesn’t make us bad people. That walking away from what hurts us isn’t selfishness. That there is no age limit for starting over. And that dreams don’t expire, either.
There are men and women who, after the age of 60, fall in love again, start businesses, pursue studies, write books, discover passions, change careers, travel, dance, launch projects, and dare to do the things they had put off for decades. After all, we often spend the first half of our lives living up to the expectations of others. And then comes the moment we ask ourselves: «What is it *I* want now?»
That question can be revolutionary. Because after 60, perhaps we no longer want a perfect life. We want a life that is truly our own. We want to wake up without feeling like we are racing against the clock. We want to care for our bodies, but also for our souls. We want to savor a cup of coffee, a conversation, a sunset, our children, our grandchildren, and our friends—but we also want to learn to enjoy our own company.
Because being alone does not necessarily mean being empty.
Sometimes, solitude becomes the place where we can finally hear ourselves.
Después de los 60 también aparecen preguntas difíciles. El cuerpo cambia. Algunas personas queridas se van. Los hijos hacen su propia vida. Algunas relaciones terminan.
After the age of 60, difficult questions arise, too. The body changes. Loved ones pass away. Children build lives of their own. Some relationships end. Fears about the future emerge. But amidst it all, there is a truth we must not forget: We are still here.
Y mientras estemos aquí, todavía podemos elegir.
Elegir sanar.
Elegir perdonar.
Elegir aprender.
Elegir amar.
Elegir empezar.
Elegir soltar.
Elegir soñar.
And as long as we are here, we can still choose. Choose to heal. Choose to forgive. Choose to learn. Choose to love. Choose to start over. Choose to let go. Choose to dream.
After sixty, perhaps a freer version of ourselves begins to emerge. A version that no longer needs so many explanations. A version that knows happiness doesn’t always make noise.
Es mirar fotografías antiguas y decir: “He vivido”.
Sometimes happiness is simply waking up and being grateful. It is having the health to walk. It is receiving a call from someone we love. It is being able to give a hug. It is laughing at our own mistakes. It is looking at old photographs and saying, “I have lived.” And it is also looking ahead and saying: “I still have so much left to live.”
Mira hacia adelante.
No pienses que llegaste tarde.
Llegaste a ti.
So, if you are crossing the threshold of sixty, do not look down. Look ahead. Do not think you arrived late. You arrived at *yourself*.
Perhaps for many years you took care of everyone. You were a mother, a father, a partner, a professional, a friend, a daughter, a caregiver, the pillar of a family. You fulfilled your responsibilities and tucked many dreams away in some corner.
Now ask yourself what dream is still waiting for you. Because the years do not take away our ability to dream. They give us something far more important: the wisdom to choose which dreams are truly worth it. And perhaps that is the true secret of passing sixty: It is not about adding years to life. It is about adding life to the years we have left.
Así que celebra tus canas.
Abraza tus arrugas.
Honra tus cicatrices.
Agradece tus aprendizajes.
Perdona tus errores.
So celebrate your gray hair. Embrace your wrinkles. Honor your scars. Be grateful for the lessons you’ve learned. Forgive your mistakes. And, above all, do not let anyone convince you that your best days are behind you. Because as long as there is a sunrise, a blank page, a song, a hug, a project, or an unfulfilled dream… the story isn’t over yet.
Life doesn’t end after sixty. A stage begins where we can finally say: “Now—at last—I’m going to live for myself.”
The Garden of Dreams. Because it is never too late to bloom again.
