THE THINKER: THE LOGIC OF THE CONVENTILLO

Uno de los aciertos más relevantes del gobierno cuando advirtió que la pandemia planetaria desatada por el Covid generaba entre los ciudadanos una creciente confusión, desconfianza y sobre todo temor, fue la creación de un grupo multidisciplinario de académicos, conocido por la sigla GACH, que convirtió no sólo en su asesor profesional sino en su voz pública cada vez que las cambiantes circunstancias lo hacían indispensable.

One of the most relevant successes of the government when it warned that the planetary pandemic unleashed by Covid was generating growing confusion among citizens, mistrust and above all fear, it was the creation of a multidisciplinary group of academics, known by the acronym GACH, who became not only his professional adviser but also his public voice whenever changing circumstances made him indispensable.

El perfil personal de los principales miembros del GACH –o sea aquellos pocos que, de acuerdo a la información a proporcionar, y apoyados en su sólido prestigio, se dirigían a la población-, Pasó, incluso, en las etapas más complejas de la pandemia y mientras el grupo asesor estuvo en funciones.

The personal profile of the main members of the GACH -that is, those few who, according to the information to be provided, and supported by their solid prestige, addressed the population-, It happened even in the most complex stages of the pandemic and while the advisory group was in office.

Pero llegó el momento en que el GACH comunicó que daba una suerte de “paso al costado”, producto de que las respuestas del servicio médico oficial habían mejorado, el virus parecía en retroceso y los académicos –que trabajaban de modo honorario y habían dejado sus actividades particulares para dedicarse a esa función asesora central, absolutamente desgastante además-, preferían volver a lo suyo aunque, y lo dejaron transparente, sin prescindir de su aporte cuando el gobierno lo requiriera. A partir de ahí el Ministerio de Salud Pública adquirió un peso significativo no sólo en la estrategia científica y asistencial, sino en el vínculo con las sacudidas emocionales de los contribuyentes. Durante una etapa no demasiado extensa, la eficacia de su labor y porque, al menos aquí, la pandemia hizo una curva descendente, todo pareció ir por los carriles adecuados.

But the time came when the GACH reported that it was taking a kind of «step aside», product of the fact that the responses of the official medical service had improved, the virus seemed to be in decline and the academics -who worked on an honorary basis and had left their private activities to dedicate themselves to that central advisory function, absolutely exhausting as well-, they preferred to go back to their own business though, and they left it transparent, without dispensing with their contribution when the government required it. From then on, the Ministry of Public Health acquired a significant weight not only in the scientific and care strategy, but also in the link with the emotional shocks of taxpayers. During a not too long stage, the effectiveness of his work and because, at least here, the pandemic took a downward curve, everything seemed to be going in the right direction.

Hasta que se juntaron un par de circunstancias que, tal vez, debieron atenderse con mayor cuidado y energía preventiva: la aparición de una nueva cepa, Omicrón, y la llegada de las fiestas tradicionales, el verano y las vacaciones en un clima de elasticidad de los cuidados por parte de la ciudadanía, coincidente, al menos a mi juicio, con una actitud del gobierno, claramente con el objetivo de salvar económicamente al turismo, una fuente significativa de recursos para el Estado, que se alineó en ese –una metáfora precisa- “afloje de cinchas”.

Until a couple of circumstances came together that, perhaps, should have been addressed with greater care and preventive energy: the appearance of a new strain, Omicron, and the arrival of traditional festivals, summer and vacations in a climate of elasticity of care by citizens, coinciding, at least in my opinion, with an attitude of the government, clearly with the objective of economically saving tourism, a significant source of resources for the State, which aligned itself with that –a precise metaphor- “loosening of straps”

Hoy, a la luz de cifras oficiales, además de todas las noticias desalentadoras que provienen del exterior, pasó lo que tenía que pasar o, al menos, lo que uno cree que tenía que pasar: más allá del aumento de la vacunación, el aumento de las dosis y referencias un tanto dispersas y desactualizadas acerca de cómo y quienes se infectan, cómo funciona el contagio a través de asintomáticos y la supuesta menor gravedad de la nueva cepa, hay un exponencial aumento de muertos por la pandemia, de internados en los diversos CTI del país y de enfermos, de todas las edades, que –es lo que dicen los responsables sanitarios- cursan la patología sin esperables consecuencias graves.

Today, in light of official figures, in addition to all the discouraging news coming from abroad, what had to happen happened or, at least, what one thinks had to happen: Beyond the increase in vaccination, the increase in doses and somewhat scattered and outdated references about how and who becomes infected, how contagion works through asymptomatic people and the supposed less seriousness of the new strain, there is an exponential increase of deaths from the pandemic, of internees in the various CTIs in the country and of patients, of all ages, who – this is what health officials say – are suffering from the pathology without expected serious consequences.

Sea como sea, no parece un proceso que se vaya a detener con freno de mano cuando se quiera, ni que dé certeza de su “aplastamiento” si los ciudadanos, y principalmente el gobierno, no dan señales de entender que se está jugando con fuego.

Be that as it may, it does not seem like a process that is going to stop with a handbrake whenever it wants, nor that give certainty of its «crushing» if the citizens, and mainly the government, do not show signs of understanding that they are playing with fire .

En paralelo, han reaparecido y crecen a diario la confusión, la desconfianza y todo tipo de teorías alocadas sobre el futuro. Y vea, lector, hay alguien más que alimenta este conventillo en ebullición: los medios de prensa, por supuesto que sin intención.

In parallel, confusion, distrust and all kinds of crazy theories about the future have reappeared and are growing daily. And see, reader, there is someone else who feeds this boiling tenement: the media, of course unintentionally.

Es que los mensajes del Poder Ejecutivo han dejado de tener la claridad de toda la etapa anterior. ¿Acaso, sin que el habitante de a pie lo sepa, se sigue consultado al menos a algunos de quienes fueron integrantes del GACH? ¿Sólo hay que atender lo que diga el Ministerio de Salud Pública y todo el sistema sanitario que, después de encabezar el pelotón en el repecho con gran dinámica da señales de agotamiento, por decirlo de algún modo? ¿Con qué situación nos encontraremos una vez que termine la temporada turística? ¿Se hará el Carnaval? ¿Cómo será el comienzo de clases? ¿No habrá que salir de esta especie de adormecimiento y tomar medidas restrictivas que ayuden a no tirar por la borda todo lo bueno conseguido hasta ahora?

It is that the messages of the Executive Branch have ceased to have the clarity of the entire previous stage. Perhaps, without the ordinary inhabitant knowing it, are at least some of those who were members of the GACH still being consulted? Is it only necessary to attend to what the Ministry of Public Health and the entire health system say, which, after leading the pack on the slope with great dynamics, shows signs of exhaustion, so to speak? What situation will we find once the tourist season ends? Will the Carnival take place? What will the start of classes be like? Will it not be necessary to get out of this kind of numbness and take restrictive measures that help not to throw away all the good things achieved so far?

Yo quiero saber con exactitud dónde estamos parados.

Y, siendo además un periodista profesional de extensa trayectoria, no advierto desde dónde puede llegarme la información que necesito. Y lo que yo quiero saber lo quieren saber mis amigos, mis vecinos y los conocidos con los que hablo de tanto en tanto.

And, being a professional journalist with a long career, I don’t realize where the information I need can come from. And what I want to know is what my friends, my neighbors and the acquaintances I talk to from time to time want to know.

¿No será hora de rearmar el GACH, o una organización académica similar, que ponga sobre sus espaldas esa responsabilidad? Nadie piensa que con eso nos salvemos; pero hallaríamos elementos de juicio más estables y recomendaciones más creíbles, que ayudaría bastante.

Isn’t it time to rearm the GACH, or a similar academic organization, that puts that responsibility on your shoulders? Nobody thinks that with that we will save ourselves; but we would find more stable evidence and more credible recommendations, which would help a lot.

Claro, siempre y cuando se atendiesen y respetasen por el gobierno.
