THE THINKER: BENEVOLENCE

Si uno despliega una mirada general, abarcadora, por las circunstancias que hoy sobresalen en la convivencia social en Uruguay, probablemente se sienta sofocado y al cabo deprimido.

If one takes a general, comprehensive look at the circumstances that stand out today in social coexistence in Uruguay, one will probably feel suffocated and ultimately depressed.

La política, adelantando sin pudor alguno una erizada e insultante campaña preelectoral, está alejando a pasos agigantados los todavía diversos -menos mal- intentos de alcanzar consensos indispensables para acercarse a un plan de desarrollo del país.

Politics, shamelessly advancing a bristling and insulting pre-electoral campaign, is moving away by leaps and bounds the still diverse – thank goodness – attempts to reach consensus essential to approaching a development plan for the country.

Y mientras tanto siguen siendo zangoloteados, ante la incomprensión pública, cuestiones esenciales como la fantasmal transformación educativa, la malherida reforma de la previsión social, la pobreza infantil, las propuestas para mejorar la seguridad y reconstruir el sistema carcelario, la disminución del tamaño costoso del Estado y la aún escasa inversión privada.

And meanwhile, essential issues such as the ghostly educational transformation, the badly wounded social security reform, child poverty, the proposals to improve security and rebuild the prison system, the reduction in the costly size of the State and the still scarce private investment.

Anoche, luego de un sueño horrible, que aunque  no lo recuerdo en detalles al despertar me dejó una sensación frustrante, vino un breve momento de serenidad y sacudió mis pensamientos como milagro posible, una palabra: benevolencia.

Last night, after a horrible dream, which although I don’t remember in detail when I woke up left me with a frustrating feeling, a brief moment of serenity came and shook my thoughts as a possible miracle, one word: benevolence.

O sea, simpatía y buena voluntad hacia las demás personas.

That is, sympathy and goodwill towards other people.

¿La verdad? Si algo anda faltando por estas tierras es precisamente ese sentimiento. Mucho más, si se acepta el valor agregado filosófico que hace un siglo propuso Bertrand Russell: “No basta con buscar el conocimiento necesario más bien que el error. También es necesario sentir benevolencia más bien que lo contrario”.

The truth? If something is missing in these lands, it is precisely that feeling. Much more so, if we accept the philosophical added value that Bertrand Russell proposed a century ago: “It is not enough to seek the necessary knowledge rather than error. It is also necessary to feel benevolence rather than the opposite.”

Russell pensaba en incorporar un valor filosófico, moral e intelectual a la simple acepción de “simpatía y buena voluntad hacia los otros”. Llegó a decir que, así vista, era, en términos sociales, más importante que el amor, del que también se necesita pero que, en general, está más relacionado a la pasión y a la construcción entre personas aisladas y con el objetivo básico no de recrear una comunidad sino una pareja y luego, quizás, una familia amplia.

Russell thought of incorporating a philosophical, moral and intellectual value to the simple meaning of “sympathy and good will towards others.” He went so far as to say that, seen in this way, it was, in social terms, more important than love, which is also needed but which, in general, is more related to passion and construction between isolated people and with the basic objective not of recreate a community but a couple and then, perhaps, an extended family.

Ocurre que se puede amar en ese círculo íntimo pero carecer de benevolencia en los aconteceres cotidianos de la sociedad. Es que amar y ser benevolente son dos emociones distintas, aunque excepcionalmente puedan unirse.

It happens that one can love in that inner circle but lack benevolence in the daily events of society. The thing is that loving and being benevolent are two different emotions, although exceptionally they can be united.

Entonces, ante mí, apareció otra realidad.

Then, before me, another reality appeared.

Hoy la sociedad uruguaya no está presidida por la benevolencia. Y ésta -Russell- dixit-, para ser sólida y constructiva, tiene que construirse a partir de los recién nacidos, cuyo mundo minúsculo, circunscrito a lo inmediatamente aparente a los sentidos, de modo gradual -la educación correcta en el hogar y a partir de sus primeros años y desarrollo, la educación- hasta formar su personalidad.

Today Uruguayan society is not governed by benevolence. And this -Russell- said-, to be solid and constructive, has to be built from newborns, whose tiny world, limited to what is immediately apparent to the senses, gradually – correct education at home and from his early years and development, education- until forming his personality.

Si el individuo ha de lograr la sabiduría, sus sentimientos y emociones debe desarrollarse a medida que se desarrollan sus conocimientos.

If the individual is to achieve wisdom, his feelings and emotions must develop as his knowledge develops.

Admitiendo como probable todo esto, quedan a nuestro frente dos realidades: si hoy no reina la benevolencia para actuar hacia nuestro progreso, perdamos la esperanza de lograrlo de inmediato o a corto plazo. Ese sentimiento esencial no aparecerá y se esparcirá sino luego de una o dos generaciones.

Admitting all this as probable, two realities remain before us: if benevolence does not reign today to act towards our progress, we will lose hope of achieving it immediately or in the short term. That essential feeling will not appear and spread until after one or two generations.

Ah…, tampoco el pesimismo. Russell también afirmó: “en nuestra vida cotidiana nos asedian las irritaciones, las frustraciones. Pero es posible, y hombres y mujeres, auténticamente sabios, por pocos que sean hoy, han demostrado que se puede vivir en un mundo tan amplio mentalmente que las vejaciones de la vida cotidiana lleguen a parecer triviales y los propósitos que agitan nuestras emociones más profundas adopten algo de la inmensidad de nuestras contemplaciones cósmicas. Unos lo lograrán en mayor grado, otros en menos, pero todos lo harán hasta cierto punto, conquistando una clase de paz que no pondrá trabas a nuestra actividad pero le quitará turbulencia”.

Ah…, not pessimism either. Russell also stated: “In our daily lives we are besieged by irritations, frustrations. But it is possible, and truly wise men and women, however few they may be today, have demonstrated that it is possible to live in a world so mentally broad that the vexations of everyday life come to seem trivial and the purposes that stir our deepest emotions. take on something of the immensity of our cosmic contemplations. Some will achieve it to a greater degree, others less, but all will do it to a certain extent, achieving a kind of peace that will not hinder our activity but will remove turbulence.»

Es como hallar un camino sinuoso y difícil de caminar, mientras se espera la benevolencia integrada a la mayoría de las personas tras dos o tres décadas de formación sin decaimientos.

It is like finding a winding and difficult path to walk, while waiting for the benevolence integrated into most people after two or three decades of training without decline.
