From a socio-educational perspective, values represent far more than abstract concepts; they are the essential reference points and guidelines that shape human behavior. They act as moral compasses, guiding the actions, decisions, and stances of every individual and social group. While there is an undeniable tendency toward subjectivity—insofar as people assign value to things and actions based on whether they find them pleasing or displeasing—their impact on collective cohesion is universal.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, 1982) firmly asserted that educational institutions must actively promote citizenship and social cohesion through values education. This premise justified the incorporation of cross-curricular themes into educational curricula—themes specifically designed to counteract the structural crises of principles that cyclically affect our societies.

Today more than ever, the global environment demands that universities and training centers graduate truly competent professionals with a well-rounded education. Such excellence cannot rely solely on technical knowledge or practical skills acquired in the classroom; it must be firmly grounded in deep convictions, empathy, and ethical values that genuinely guide professional practice. Meeting this standard necessitates, above all, a solid axiological foundation.

Key Focus: Let us visualize, in the following image, this phrase that is significant in both professional and personal contexts.

Current pedagogical practice must focus tangible efforts on the act of «educating for a culture of peace.» This entails fostering critical thinking, social responsibility, and the constructive, positive management of conflict. It becomes imperative to strengthen essential values such as dialogue and equitable exchange, while reaffirming the importance of mutual care and tenderness in daily practice.

The image presents a powerful visual metaphor for the impact of education on society. At the center, an imposing, lush tree—representing the «Culture of Peace» and «Pedagogical Action»—stands as a radiant, living shield against the darkness. Flanking it, dense, thorn-laden gray clouds symbolize social threats such as violence, exclusion, intolerance, and negative values.

Yet, the image’s true strength lies in the collective response: an educator and a diverse group of children are seen working as a team, carefully planting new seeds and shoots labeled with fundamental values like respect, empathy, dialogue, solidarity, and justice. The light emanating from the center dispels the shadows, clearly illustrating how tangible, coordinated pedagogical effort can halt the advance of negative values and cultivate harmonious coexistence.

This pro-social vision seeks to equip citizens with the tools to overcome destructive dynamics and confront everyday injustices. The goal is not to adopt a pessimistic, skeptical, or cynical stance toward reality, but rather a proactive and constructive one. It is urgent to recognize a contemporary symptom: the behavior of a significant portion of society reveals a progressive abandonment of traditional moral values, giving way to so-called «anti-values»—elements that undermine, erode, and degrade human relationships.

This phenomenon of axiological erosion stems from multifactorial causes that are deeply interconnected within the social fabric; let us look at the following image:

While processes of devaluation have emerged at various points in human history, the present era is distinguished by their heightened urgency. Nevertheless, countless individuals continue to demonstrate extraordinary human qualities, embracing universal values such as responsibility, humility, honesty, solidarity, and mutual respect. In light of this display of dignity, it is only right to acknowledge the profound merit of the school and, above all, the family.

To delve into the significance of values-based education within family, school, and community settings, it is illuminating to analyze the influence of the Brazilian thinker and educator Paulo Freire (1972) through an ethical and human lens.

On that famous afternoon when Freire began the process of learning to read and write on the ground of his home’s courtyard in Recife, the setting was revealing: the earth itself served as his chalkboard, and a small tree branch as his chalk. The key words used did not belong to the alien adult world, but rather to his own childhood universe. In this way, the child’s world was never violated or colonized; instead, it was entered with respect, decoded, and understood. From that foundational experience, Paulo Freire’s dreams of transformation gained historical viability.

Years later, in an intimate and reflective conversation, Freire himself would recall:

«Lost are those who do not dream passionately, who are not romantics.

I dream that the streets will never again be emptied.

That political leaders will never again use crowded public squares

llenas para poder negociar arriba.

..fully prepared to negotiate from a position of strength.

I dream that we all learn to embrace change democratically.

I dream of a society reinventing itself from the bottom up, where everyone has the right to speak their mind, not merely the duty to listen.

This is a historically viable dream, yet it required people to have uncrossed their arms long ago.

The pedagogy of the oppressed and liberating education are not viable without an axiological foundation that places human dignity, horizontality, and active hope as the pillars of every educational act. The challenge of uncrossing one’s arms remains fully relevant today.
