Everyone into the water! The presidential swimming pool

And just when it seemed the confrontation with the press couldn’t get any more bizarre, a swimming pool entered the picture.
According to reports published by The New York Times in October 2026, Donald Trump had proposed moving journalists out of their current workspace and restoring the indoor swimming pool that Franklin D. Roosevelt had built at the White House in 1933.
The original pool was covered over during Richard Nixon’s presidency to make room for facilities for the press.

However, on October 24, Trump denied ever having considered the proposal to restore the pool and replace the press briefing room with it. It is therefore worth distinguishing between the reports published about the initiative and the president’s denial.
¡Imagínense semejante conferencia presidencial!
Just imagine such a presidential press conference!
—Señor presidente, ¿qué sucede con la inflación?
“Mr. President, what’s happening with inflation?”
—¡Al agua!
“Into the water!”
“Mr. President, what about international relations?”
—¡Otro chapuzón!
“Time for another dip!”
—Señor presidente, ¿podemos hacer una pregunta adicional?
“Mr. President, may we ask one more question?”
—¡Traigan los salvavidas!
“Bring out the life preservers!”
Naturally, this scenario is a satire. There is no evidence that Trump ever ordered journalists to be thrown into a swimming pool, and the proposal to transform the space was never an approved or executed project.
But the image is irresistible: as journalists search for answers, the prospect of restoring a swimming pool—right where those who question the president work—fuels a controversy that goes well beyond architecture.
The fundamental question remains the same: what role should the press play in a White House that has an increasingly contentious relationship with certain media outlets?
