LA PAZ ENTRE LOS ESCOMBROS DE LAS GUERRAS RESUELTAS DE TRUMP

PEACE AMID THE RUBBLE OF TRUMP’S RESOLVED WARS

As Donald Trump continues to travel across the United States in the midst of his election campaign, his rallies often seem to morph into a bizarre hybrid of a beauty pageant, a television show, and a circus—with the president serving as master of ceremonies, judge, and main attraction. Meanwhile, the public’s peace of mind seems to be slipping away, overshadowed by conflicts that Trump claims to have resolved, even as their consequences persist.

A master showman, Trump seeks to divert attention from reality by playing with the public’s mind, using a form of stand-up comedy to distract them from pressing issues. Ultimately, he seems to believe he deserves everyone’s full attention—so long as he can elicit a smile.

He set up his circus tent in Georgia and Kentucky. During his recent public appearances, the president spent part of his speeches commenting on the physical attractiveness of various Republican candidates—as if it were some local neighborhood contest—while also mocking the appearance of some of his opponents.

What a way to present the credentials of those aspiring to govern!

It now appears that his star power and ideas have run dry, and that his show is being brought into people’s homes to promote his subordinates and help them reach Congress. Policy proposals, qualifications, and an understanding of national issues seem to matter little; all it takes to vie for votes is passing the president’s own «beauty pageant.»

Trump praises faces, shoulders, jawlines, and male physiques as if he were scouting contestants for a new season of *Miss Universe*—a pageant he once owned. Yet, he seems to have forgotten about tariffs and the verbal sparring matches he has had with California Governor Gavin Newsom—confrontations that have defined much of their political relationship.

But there is a small irony in all of this.

Has he taken a good, long look in the mirror before setting out to scrutinize the physical appearance of others?

The president is certainly not fifty years old. On June 14th, he turned eighty, and no matter how many presidential decrees one might sign, the calendar offers no immunity against the passage of time. The real issue, however, is not a leader’s age or physical appearance; what matters is that they work for the people with seriousness and integrity, and that they stand up for their voters. Trump’s tenure, by contrast, ended up dealing us a blow after he won the election.

Moreover, beauty and wrinkles are both part of life—as is gray hair. And no amount of orange makeup, however carefully applied, can stop the hands of the clock.

Trump himself recently acknowledged that he uses makeup and applies it personally. What is curious is not that he does so, but that he finds reason to mock the cosmetics used by his opponents, failing to realize that his own appearance can resemble a *Simpsons*-style caricature.

At this rate, he might one day replace a political debate with a beauty pageant—complete with a runway, a panel of judges, and a band playing backstage. Perhaps this is why some of his own political allies have distanced themselves from his administration and his political persona. Nevertheless, they could all end up suffering the consequences of his administration’s decline in the legislative elections on November 3, 2026—because the «punishment vote» is a real phenomenon.

Ultimately, however, nations are not sustained by pretty faces or muscular bodies.

Working people cannot bring a candidate’s physical attractiveness home to prepare dinner. They cannot pay their electricity bills with a perfect jawline, nor can they fill their gas tanks with a presidential smile.

Food reaches the table through the labor, wages, and daily sacrifices of millions of people.

While the conversation on the electoral stage centers on beauty, American families are grappling with the costs of food, housing, essential services, and fuel.

Taxes are part of this economic concern, as are trade tariffs—the costs of which can be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices.

According to estimates published by The Budget Lab at Yale University, by August 2026, the prevailing tariff policy could amount to an additional cost of roughly $1,100 per year for the average American household.

And no amount of makeup can hide the reality of the bills!

After all, when the electricity bill arrives, nobody asks whether a member of Congress has blue eyes, long legs, or a Hollywood-style smile.

The concern is much simpler: where will the money to pay it come from?

But the electoral spectacle has another, far more concerning, dimension.

Donald Trump has framed his international efforts as major diplomatic triumphs. He has spoken of wars brought to an end, agreements reached, and his own ability to secure a peace that other leaders could not achieve.

It is fair to acknowledge that diplomacy can pave the way for understanding and bring conflicts to a halt. However, a negotiation, a truce, and a lasting peace are not necessarily the same thing.

The difference becomes clear once the cameras are turned off and the leaders stop shaking hands.

In Gaza, for instance, the ceasefire announced in October 2025 did not put an end to all the deaths.

A year later, the United Nations Office of Human Rights reported that Israeli attacks were continuing, noting that—according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health—more than 1,400 people had died since that announcement.

Israel maintains that its military operations are intended to combat Hamas and respond to threats against its security. Nevertheless, the protection of the civilian population remains a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law.

What lies behind Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisions? To what extent are they driven by military considerations, political interests, or a strategy that remains unknown to us?

Only he fully understands his own motivations. Yet, the human consequences of these military operations are plain to see and deserve to be examined.

At this point, I would like to step away from the electoral landscape and enter the realm of tragedy.

I imagine a Palestinian mother walking through the ruins of what was once her home.

Her hands, coated in dust, push aside stones, chunks of concrete, and twisted metal. Amidst the rubble, she finds a small shoe, a family photograph, and a few other items that survived the bombardment.

She hears no presidential speeches, nor does she concern herself with military strategy.

Busca a su hijo.

She is searching for her child.

Thousands of kilometers away, leaders speak of negotiations, security, agreements, and diplomatic victories.

But that mother—a figure born of my imagination to represent the many civilian families searching for their dead—wants only to recover what the war has torn from her.

And then, I imagine her looking up and asking:

“Mr. Trump, if you say the wars have ended, why am I still searching for my son among the rubble?”

No hay aplausos.

There is no applause.

No hay una banda musical.

There is no marching band.

Nor do the candidates with their perfect, polished faces appear to provide an answer.

All that remains is the silence of a destroyed city.

And while that mother continues her search, somewhere in a government hall, another ceremony is perhaps being prepared to celebrate a peace agreement.

¡Qué ironía la de nuestro tiempo!

What an irony of our times!

On one stage, the debate centers on who has the most beautiful face for governing. On another, it concerns who deserves credit for having achieved peace.

Meanwhile, an American family struggles to balance their budget to make ends meet, while on the other side of the world, a Palestinian family tries to recover their loved ones.

These are different realities, yet all serve as a reminder that the decisions made by those in power carry consequences far more significant than their physical appearance.

For the true merit of a leader is not measured by their face, but by their actions. And peace is not measured by the number of wars a president claims to have ended, but by the lives that are truly spared.

After all, no speech can, on its own, rebuild a destroyed home; no applause can bring back a life; and no medal can offer comfort to a mother who continues to search through the rubble.

Perhaps one day, the peace proclaimed in presidential halls will truly reach the streets of Gaza.

Until then, the rubble will continue to tell a story quite different from the one recounted in speeches. Because, in the end, it does not matter how well-groomed a politician may be—what matters is how hard they work for those who elected them.
