Do you think only Hindi is spoken in India? One country, thousands of voices, and no national language.

Beyond stereotypes, India demonstrates that learning different languages from childhood opens doors not only to knowledge but also to respect, coexistence, and cultural diversity.

When we think of India, many imagine Hindi to be the language of the entire country. However, this perception masks a fascinating reality: India has no single national language. Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, serves as the official language of the Union government, while English continues to be used for numerous official purposes. Furthermore, the Constitution recognizes 22 languages in its Eighth Schedule, including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu, and Malayalam.

Yet, India’s linguistic richness extends far beyond these 22 languages. Each region preserves its own unique expressions, traditions, and ways of interpreting the world. Traveling from one state to another can mean discovering an entirely different language—all while remaining within the same country.

This diversity is also reflected in education. Since 1968, Indian educational policy has promoted the so-called «three-language formula,» which encourages the learning of multiple languages throughout a student’s schooling. The National Education Policy of 2020 reaffirms this principle, introducing greater flexibility and avoiding the imposition of any single language. It also recommends using one’s mother tongue or a regional language as the medium of instruction—at least up to the fifth grade, and preferably through the eighth grade.

Why is it so important to start at a young age?

Learning multiple languages during childhood provides opportunities to develop communication skills and experience different linguistic structures. Some research links bilingualism to greater cognitive flexibility, although its broader benefits for executive functions remain a subject of scientific debate.

Yet, there is another equally important dimension: the human one.

When a child learns another language, they also discover different customs, histories, and ways of thinking. They come to understand that their own culture is not the only one, and that differences are not threats, but rather opportunities for enrichment.

In a world where linguistic differences still give rise to prejudice and discrimination, education in multilingualism can become a powerful tool for fostering empathy and respect.

India offers us an extraordinary lesson: unity does not require uniformity. Its true richness lies in the possibility of living together without having to abandon one’s cultural identity.

Because learning a language means much more than just memorizing words. It means reaching out to another person, understanding their history, and recognizing their dignity.

Perhaps the world does not need us all to speak the same language; rather, it needs us to learn how to listen to and respect every voice.
