In this article, we are going to unlearn a myth that we’ve been told our entire lives: that crying is synonymous with weakness. How many times have we held back tears, tried to hide the lump in our throats, or said «it’s nothing» while, on the inside, we were falling apart?

We delve into «The Hidden Power of Tears: When Letting It All Out Is the First Step Toward Healing.» We will discover how the water that flows from our eyes is, in fact, a chemical and emotional balm—one that cleanses us, brings us back into alignment, and restores our humanity. So, get comfortable, take a deep breath, and join us as we read between the lines to understand what our emotions are shouting at us.

To that end, we have set the following objectives:

Destigmatizing crying: Validating tears as a natural physiological and emotional response, one that is necessary for mental health.
Understanding the chemistry of pain: Explaining how the body uses tears to release toxins and reduce accumulated stress.
Encouraging self-compassion: Transforming the shame associated with crying into a tool for liberation and self-love.

The body knows what the mind keeps silent.

Sometimes, our minds try to hold everything together—work, family, the expectations of others, the role of being "strong." But the body has its own wisdom, and sooner or later, it finds an escape valve. Tears are not a system failure; they are your body saying, "You’ve carried enough; let me help you lighten the load."

To help us delve deeper into this journey, we will have a conversation with Dr. Pastor Alberto Hernández Quintana.

Y.A. Why have we been culturally conditioned to suppress tears, and what long-term impact does this have on our bodies?

We have been raised within rigid paradigms that equate feeling with weakness or a loss of control. However, from the perspective of human ecology, we understand that the body and mind form an interconnected system. By suppressing tears, we disrupt a natural channel for self-regulation. Over time, the body somatizes this unexpressed tension, manifesting it as anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, and profound, deep-seated exhaustion.

Y.A. From the standpoints of neurobiology and psychology, what exactly happens in our brain and nervous system when we allow ourselves to cry freely?

A process of vital equilibrium takes place. Neurobiologically, crying activates the parasympathetic nervous system and triggers the release of endorphins and oxytocin, which act as natural painkillers. Psychologically—by employing what is known in the Theory of Mind as «emotional metacognition»—we enable the brain to process the event, organize the experience, and return us to a state of calm.

Y.A. There is a chemical difference between tears caused by an onion and emotional tears. What do the latter reveal about what we need to heal?

¡Totalmente!

Absolutely! Reflex tears are primarily water, serving to protect the eye. Emotional tears, by contrast, contain high levels of stress hormones, such as corticotropin. When we cry due to emotion, the body is literally detoxifying itself. These tears serve as an indicator from our psyche, pointing toward where we have lost our balance and which area of our life requires healing.

El valor de quebrarse para reconstruirse.

The courage to break apart in order to rebuild oneself.

No one emerges unscathed from life’s great battles, and pretending to be made of stone only leaves us fragile when faced with the first real blow. Allowing yourself to break down is an acknowledgment that you are human—that it hurts—and it is precisely at this point of apparent collapse that true transformation begins. You cannot heal what you refuse to admit causes you pain.

Y.A. Many people feel shame or guilt after an episode of intense crying. Where does this sense of misunderstood vulnerability come from?

It stems from confusing vulnerability with fragility. In both pedagogical and human practice, showing our vulnerability is the ultimate act of courage. Feeling guilty after crying is an echo of old social mandates that demanded we remain unshakeable. Crying does not destroy our leadership or our dignity; on the contrary, it humanizes them.

Y.A. How can we distinguish between crying that serves as a healing release and crying associated with deep depressive episodes that require professional attention?

Healing tears are cathartic: they bring relief, lighten one’s burden, and provide greater clarity for moving forward. Depressive crying, by contrast, is ruminative; it offers no relief and is accompanied by hopelessness, apathy, and a loss of meaning. When crying becomes paralyzing, it ceases to be a tool for self-regulation and instead signals a need for professional support.

Y.A. What would you say to those who claim, «I can no longer cry; my tears have dried up»? How can one break through that emotional armor?

«I would tell them that their tears did not dry up; rather, their soul forged a protective armor to shield itself from overwhelming pain. This armor cannot be broken through demands, but only through a pedagogy of love and tenderness—by creating environments of safe listening where a person can discover that it is, in fact, safe to begin feeling again.

Y.A. How can one’s environment (family, partner, workplace) create a safe space where someone can let their emotions overflow, free from judgment?

By letting go of the urge to ‘fix’ things or to silence someone with empty platitudes like ‘it’s nothing’ or ‘be strong.’ A safe environment is built through full presence—listening without judgment and validating the emotion. It means assuring the other person that their pain matters and that they will not be rejected for showing vulnerability.

Y.A. If you had to summarize the core message: why can we say that letting one’s emotions overflow is, in reality, the first step toward a new beginning?

Because a full vessel cannot receive anything new. Letting emotions overflow is not the same as falling apart; it is about releasing rigidity so that we can reorganize ourselves at a higher level of resilience. Tears clear our vision and prepare the soil for a stronger, more lucid, and profoundly human version of ourselves to emerge.»

Llorar también es un acto de valentía.

Crying is also an act of courage.

We live in a world that applauds constant toughness, yet it takes far more courage to be vulnerable than it does to put on a suit of armor. When you cry—whether in front of others or when alone—you are stripping away false appearances. That falling tear is, in truth, a cry of self-love that says: «I care enough about my own well-being to stop pretending that I’m okay.»

Today we learned that tears are not a weakness to be swept under the rug, but rather an underground river that washes away pain and prepares us to bloom once again. If you need to cry today, do so without guilt. Allow yourself to let it all out, for healing begins right there—in the courage to let go. Each falling tear carries away the tension, the pain, and the guilt you have been holding onto in silence. Letting it all out is not the end of anything; it is the beginning of everything. It is the precise moment you stop fighting against yourself and grant yourself permission to heal. Embrace your tears, honor what you feel, and remember: even the darkest skies must rain before they can shine again.
