When lying becomes a political tool to garner applause

COLUMNISTA
In search of the truth, I wanted to know the definition of a compulsive liar—also known as a mythomaniac or a pathological liar.
I know there are zealots ready to throw stones at my glass house to defend Mr. Donald Trump tooth and nail. That is why I prefer not to offer a diagnosis; I am neither a psychologist nor a psychiatrist.
However, I can speak to something that is plain to see and verifiable: Donald Trump has turned lying into a political tool, backed by a track record of repeated false or misleading statements.
And here is a prime example. This time, I’ve come armed with «Googlelandia» for anyone who wishes to prove me wrong.

Recently, Hillary Clinton once again questioned precisely that aspect of the U.S. president. Her criticism targets something that has long been associated with Trump’s political persona: the ease with which a statement can become accepted truth among his followers simply because it is repeated over and over again.
I don’t need to recite a litany of twenty falsehoods. Five examples can speak volumes more than an endless stream of words.
1. Las ocho guerras que asegura haber terminado / The eight wars he claims to have ended
Trump ha repetido que terminó ocho guerras.
Trump has repeatedly stated that he ended eight wars.
Pero la realidad es bastante más complicada.
But the reality is far more complex.
Independent fact-checkers acknowledge that his administration played a significant role in certain agreements and cessations of hostilities. However, some of the instances Trump cites were not strictly wars, and other conflicts were not definitively resolved.
Entonces, ¿qué significa “terminar una guerra”?
So, what does it mean to “end a war”?
¿Participar en una negociación? ¿Conseguir un alto el fuego? ¿Detener temporalmente los disparos?
Participating in negotiations? Securing a ceasefire? Temporarily halting the shooting?
Because if the bombing resumes across the board, it is difficult to portray that as a war brought to an end.
2. Ganó tres elecciones presidenciales / He won three presidential elections.
Trump afirmó recientemente haber ganado tres elecciones presidenciales.
Trump recently claimed to have won three presidential elections.
No.
No
Ganó en 2016 y volvió a ganar en 2024. En 2020 perdió frente a Joe Biden.
He won in 2016 and won again in 2024. In 2020, he lost to Joe Biden.
Repeating the contrary does not change the outcome of that election. A claim does not become a fact simply because the person making it has millions of followers.
The AP once again flagged this claim as false just this week.
Trump has boasted of attracting more than $20 trillion in investment to the United States.
However, FactCheck.org points out that Trump has not provided an accounting to back up such a figure.
Even the White House’s own website lists a considerably lower figure and conflates domestic and foreign investments, as well as announcements and projects that could span years or never even materialize.
Here, too, one need not be an economist to grasp a basic point:
An announced investment is not necessarily money actually invested.
4. El precio de la gasolina y el costo de vida / Gasoline prices and the cost of living
Aquí aparece una ironía difícil de ignorar.
Here, there is an irony that is hard to ignore.
Trump has repeatedly cited gasoline prices as proof of the success of his policies. However, the conflict with Iran and difficulties regarding energy transport through the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to driving prices up again.
FactCheck.org had already documented how the disruption of shipping through Hormuz affected the United States via international oil prices.
Today, the situation is even more complicated: the conflict with Iran continues, and problems along oil shipping routes keep putting upward pressure on energy prices.
Reality, once again, seems to have the unfortunate habit of failing to align with political rhetoric.
And we arrive at one of the claims that has had the most significant political consequences: insisting that an election lost was actually an election won.
Years have passed, yet Trump continues to portray himself as the winner of the 2020 election. That claim even resurfaced in his recent speech at the Republican convention.
A lie repeated a thousand times may become a rallying cry for those who wish to believe it, but that does not make it the truth.
Y aquí está el verdadero problema.
And therein lies the real problem.
It is not merely a matter of a politician telling a lie.
The problem begins when that lie is repeated, turns into a narrative, then a slogan, and finally finds an audience ready to applaud it—and, in the worst-case scenario, to endorse that «truth» without demanding verification.
For when a society stops asking whether something is true and begins asking only who said it, politics ceases to be an exercise in reality and starts becoming an exercise in faith.
As Ricardo Arjona says, “the problem isn’t the problem.” In this case, the problem isn’t just a lie, either.
The real problem is what happens next.
When a lie finds repetition, followers, and applause, it ceases to be merely a falsehood.
Se convierte en herramienta política.
It becomes a political tool.
Una herramienta política para conseguir aplausos.
A political tool to garner applause.
