La historia de la guía espiritual, Amma, ya conocida en esta columna como  la representación más genuina de las culturas del mundo, llega en proyección privada, cedida gratuitamente a la organización de Amma en España el sábado 26 de septiembre, el documental italiano de 2022 “Amma’s Way, Un abrazo al mundo”, dirigido por Anna Agnelli.

The story of the spiritual guide Amma—already featured in this column as a genuine embodiment of global cultures—is coming to the screen via a private screening of the 2022 Italian documentary *Amma’s Way* (directed by Anna Agnelli). The film is being provided free of charge to Amma’s organization in Spain for the event on Saturday, September 26.

La directora Agnelli es la penúltima generación de la conocida familia Agnelli de Turín, pionera de la industria automovilística italiana, y por su gestión de la Juventus, equipo de fútbol propiedad de la familia.

Director Anna Agnelli belongs to the latest generation of the renowned Agnelli family of Turin, pioneers of the Italian automotive industry and known for their management of the family-owned football club, Juventus.

La primera proyección tendrá lugar en Madrid, en el Teatro Salesianos, Colegio de San Juan Bautista, a la que asistirá la directora Agnelli quien mantendrá un coloquio al final de la representación.

The premiere screening will take place in Madrid at the Teatro Salesianos (San Juan Bautista School) and will be attended by Director Agnelli, who will hold a discussion session following the screening.

Sin hacer spoiler del documental, su título ya dice que vamos a asistir durante hora y media a la intensa y extensa vida y obra de Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, conocida en el mundo como Amma (madre).

Without spoiling the documentary, its title alone tells us that for an hour and a half, we will witness the intense and expansive life and work of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi—known to the world as Amma («Mother»).

Es la historia de una mujer excepcional que nació hace setenta y dos años en una remota aldea del profundo sur de la India, en una humilde familia campesina, destinada a que le buscaran un marido en su más tierna adolescencia, costumbre ancestral india. Las niñas, tenían que aportar una dote a la familia del futuro marido, es decir, había que pagar por el favor de admitirlas en su futura familia.

It is the story of an exceptional woman born seventy-two years ago into a humble farming family in a remote village in deep southern India—a setting where, in keeping with ancient Indian custom, girls were destined to have a husband chosen for them during early adolescence. Girls were required to provide a dowry to the future husband’s family; in other words, payment was necessary to secure the favor of being accepted into that family.

Pero la futura Amma, entonces llamada Sudhamani, jugaba en otra categoría desde niña. Se negó a casarse, se dedicó a ayudar de mil maneras a los más necesitados de la aldea, empezó a tener seguidores, primero cercanos, luego de más lejos… Es una larga historia  ya conocida, y publicada. Pero aquella niña aldeana hoy es seguida por millones de personas en todo el mundo. Ha creado una obra humanitaria ingente, que cuenta con centros de enseñanza, desde escuelas a la Universidad Amrita, con varios campus en India y conciertos culturales con universidades europeas y norteamericanas.

Yet the future Amma—then known as Sudhamani—was in a league of her own from childhood. She refused to marry and dedicated herself to helping the village’s neediest residents in countless ways; she began to attract followers—first from nearby, then from further afield… It is a long story, already well-known and documented. Yet that village girl is followed today by millions of people across the globe. She has created a massive humanitarian legacy that includes educational institutions—ranging from schools to Amrita University, with multiple campuses in India and collaborative partnerships with European and North American universities.

Una ingente obra de empoderamiento de la mujer, mediante la educación, creación de empresas cooperativas, pequeños negocios locales en la inmensa India rural, todo a favor de que la mujer se independice sea libre de casarse o no, siempre manteniendo su independencia. Un hecho así, en un país como India, es absolutamente revolucionario.

She has undertaken a massive effort to empower women through education and the creation of cooperatives and small local businesses across vast rural India—all aimed at enabling women to become independent and free to choose whether or not to marry, while always maintaining their autonomy. Such an initiative is truly revolutionary in a country like India.

Siempre pensando en los vulnerables de este mundo, creó en Estados Unidos, Amma’s Kitchen, comedores para los numerosísimos “homeless” (sin techo) en varias ciudades del gran país.  Es de señalar, que la mayoría de estas personas ni siquiera están censadas, es decir, no existen. Una forma de ayudar, pero también se señalar las vulnerabilidades de los poderosos.

Always mindful of the world’s vulnerable, she established «Amma’s Kitchen» in the United States—soup kitchens serving the vast homeless population in several cities across the country. It is worth noting that many of these individuals are not even registered in the census; in other words, they do not officially exist. This serves as a way to help, but also to highlight the vulnerabilities of the powerful.

Hace años Amma fue distinguida por la New York State University con un doctorado Honoris Causa en Humanidades; ha sido invitada a hablar en la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas en Nueva York de su obra humanitaria “Abrazando al Mundo”. Ha realizado giras por países y continentes, la más cercana a nosotros la gira europea que durante mucho tiempo fue anual y desde la pandemia más espaciada, la última en 2025. 

Years ago, the State University of New York awarded Amma an honorary doctorate in Humanities; she has also been invited to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York about her humanitarian initiative, «Embracing the World.» She has toured numerous countries and continents; the tour most relevant to us is the European one—an event that was long held annually but has become less frequent since the pandemic, with the most recent tour scheduled for 2025.

Giras por norte y sur de su país, India; Japón, Australia, Estados Unidos y una visita puntual hace años a Chile y Brasil. Ha estado varias veces en el continente africano, en Kenia, Mauricio y Reunión, donde ha impulsado escuelas y becas, proyectos sanitarios, especialmente el de operación gratuita de cataratas  en Kenia, Camerún, Senegal, Sierra Leona, Burkina Faso y Zambia. Proyectos de formación profesional para la mujer, etc.

She has toured the north and south of her home country, India, as well as Japan, Australia, and the United States, and made specific visits years ago to Chile and Brazil. She has visited the African continent—including Kenya, Mauritius, and Réunion—multiple times, where she has championed schools, scholarship programs, and healthcare initiatives; notable among these are free cataract surgery projects in Kenya, Cameroon, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, and Zambia, as well as vocational training programs for women.

Su abrazo ha llegado de forma directa a más de cien millones de personas.

Her embrace has directly reached more than one hundred million people.
