At what point did we start believing that pain could have an expiration date?

We live in an era that wants to attach instructions to everything.

Cinco pasos para alcanzar el éxito.
Diez preguntas para encontrar el propósito.
Veintiún días para cambiar un hábito.
Treinta días para transformar la vida.

Five steps to achieve success. Ten questions to find your purpose. Twenty-one days to change a habit. Thirty days to transform your life.

Y ahora también tenemos calendarios para sanar.

And now, we even have calendars for healing.

El duelo puede convertirse en aprendizaje. La tristeza, en una oportunidad. Las heridas de la infancia, en una serie de ejercicios. El miedo, en una lección. Todo parece susceptible de ser convertido en método, empaquetado, promocionado y vendido.

Grief can be turned into a learning experience; sadness into an opportunity; childhood wounds into a series of exercises; fear into a lesson. Everything seems capable of being turned into a method—packaged, promoted, and sold.

El problema no es que existan herramientas para ayudarnos a comprender lo que nos sucede.

The problem is not that there are tools to help us understand what happens to us.

El problema comienza cuando el dolor humano deja de ser una experiencia que necesita ser comprendida y se convierte en un producto que debe ser consumido.

The problem begins when human pain ceases to be an experience that needs to be understood and becomes a product to be consumed.

La herramienta y su imitación

The tool and its imitation

Escribir sobre aquello que nos duele puede ser una herramienta genuina.

Writing about what causes us pain can be a genuine tool.

Poner palabras donde antes solamente había silencio. Intentar ordenar los pensamientos. Mirar de frente una experiencia. Nombrar aquello que durante años no pudimos nombrar.

Putting words where there was once only silence. Trying to organize one’s thoughts. Facing an experience head-on. Naming what we could not name for years.

Eso no es nuevo. La escritura, la reflexión y la palabra han acompañado al ser humano mucho antes de que alguien decidiera convertirlas en una metodología comercial.

This is nothing new. Writing, reflection, and the spoken word have accompanied human beings long before anyone decided to turn them into a commercial methodology.

Pero existe una diferencia enorme entre utilizar una herramienta y vender la ilusión de que esa herramienta puede resolver cualquier dolor siguiendo unas instrucciones predeterminadas.

But there is a vast difference between using a tool and selling the illusion that said tool can resolve any pain simply by following a set of predetermined instructions.

Es la diferencia entre enseñar a alguien a nadar y venderle un flotador con la promesa de que nunca tendrá que aprender a nadar.

It is the difference between teaching someone to swim and selling them a float with the promise that they will never have to learn to swim.

Y alrededor de esa segunda fórmula ha crecido un mercado extraordinariamente rentable.

And an extraordinarily profitable market has grown up around that second approach.

Un mercado que ha descubierto que la vulnerabilidad vende.

A market that has discovered that vulnerability sells.

El dolor no es universal

Pain is not universal.

Una de las grandes trampas de la autoayuda convertida en mercancía es hacernos creer que todos sufrimos de la misma manera.

One of the great traps of commodified self-help is leading us to believe that we all suffer in the same way.

Pero no existe un dolor genérico.

But there is no such thing as generic pain.

No es lo mismo atravesar un duelo que sentir una tristeza pasajera. No es lo mismo una inseguridad cotidiana que una historia marcada por el abandono. No es lo mismo querer reorganizar la propia vida que intentar reconstruirse después de una experiencia devastadora.

Going through grief is not the same as feeling a fleeting sadness. Everyday insecurity is not the same as a history marked by abandonment. Wanting to reorganize one’s life is not the same as trying to rebuild oneself after a devastating experience.

Sin embargo, una plantilla puede venderse a todos.

Yet a template can be sold to everyone.

Porque la plantilla es escalable.

Because the template is scalable.

Y allí aparece una de las contradicciones más evidentes de este negocio: cuanto más complejo es el ser humano, más sencillo debe hacerse el producto para poder venderlo masivamente.

And therein lies one of the most glaring contradictions of this business: the more complex the human being, the simpler the product must be to achieve mass sales.

Así nacen las fórmulas.

That is how formulas are born.

«Sana tu niño interior».

«Heal your inner child.»

«Transforma tu vida».

«Transform your life.»

«Libérate de tus heridas».

«Free yourself from your wounds.»

«Reprograma tu mente».

«Reprogram your mind.»

«Hazlo durante treinta días».

«Do it for thirty days.»

El lenguaje cambia. La promesa es esencialmente la misma:

The language changes. The promise is essentially the same:

haz esto y estarás mejor.

do this, and you’ll be better off.

Pero el dolor no funciona así.

But pain doesn’t work that way.

El problema de ponerle calendario a una herida

The problem with putting a timeline on a wound

Hay algo profundamente engañoso en prometer una fecha para la transformación emocional.

There is something deeply misleading about promising a specific date for emotional transformation.

Porque el dolor no tiene calendario.

Because pain does not follow a schedule.

Una persona puede comprender intelectualmente lo que le ocurre y seguir necesitándolo tiempo para procesarlo.

A person may intellectually understand what is happening to them and still need time to process it.

Puede escribir durante treinta días y continuar herida.

They might write for thirty days and remain wounded.

Puede completar todos los ejercicios y descubrir que debajo de la primera capa hay otra.

They might complete every exercise and discover that beneath the first layer lies another.

Y otra.

And another.

Y otra.

And another.

Eso no significa que haya fracasado.

That does not mean they have failed.

Significa que es humana.

It means they are human.

El problema aparece cuando el método se presenta como una promesa y la persona termina convirtiéndose en responsable del fracaso de esa promesa.

The problem arises when the method is presented as a promise, and the person ends up being held responsible for the failure of that promise.

Si no sanaste en treinta días, quizá no hiciste suficientemente bien el ejercicio.

If you didn’t heal in thirty days, perhaps you didn’t do the exercise well enough.

Si sigues triste, quizá no cambiaste tu pensamiento.

If you are still sad, perhaps you didn’t change your thinking.

Si todavía tienes miedo, quizá no quisiste realmente transformarte.

If you are still afraid, perhaps you didn’t truly want to transform.

Y así, al dolor original se le agrega otro:

And so, another layer is added to the original pain:

la culpa.

guilt.

Cuando la ayuda retrasa la ayuda

When aid delays aid

Este asunto tampoco es menor.

This is no minor matter, either.

Una herramienta de reflexión puede ser útil. Un libro puede acompañar. Un curso puede aportar conocimientos. Una persona puede encontrar en la escritura un espacio extraordinario para expresarse.

A tool for reflection can be useful. A book can offer companionship. A course can provide knowledge. Writing can offer a person an extraordinary space for self-expression.

Pero ninguna de esas cosas debería presentarse como sustituto universal de una ayuda especializada cuando esa ayuda es necesaria.

But none of these things should be presented as a universal substitute for specialized help when such help is needed.

Porque allí el negocio deja de ser simplemente ingenuo.

Because at that point, the business venture ceases to be merely naive.

Puede convertirse en peligroso.

It can become dangerous.

Cuando alguien necesita atención profesional y en su lugar recibe la promesa de que encontrará la solución siguiendo una metodología comercial durante unas semanas, puede terminar retrasando una ayuda que necesitaba desde el principio.

When someone needs professional care but is instead promised a solution through a commercial methodology over the course of a few weeks, they may end up delaying the very help they needed from the start.

Y mientras tanto, alguien está monetizando su esperanza.

And all the while, someone is monetizing their hope.

El vendedor convertido en autoridad emocional

The salesperson turned emotional authority

Hay otra cuestión que merece ser observada.

There is another point worth noting.

En las redes sociales se ha normalizado que determinadas personas hablen de emociones con una autoridad que no siempre corresponde con su preparación.

On social media, it has become normalized for certain people to speak about emotions with an authority that does not always match their qualifications.

La seguridad con la que se pronuncia una frase no convierte esa frase en conocimiento.

The confidence with which a statement is made does not turn that statement into knowledge.

Un testimonio no constituye evidencia.

A personal account does not constitute evidence.

Una transformación personal no convierte automáticamente a alguien en especialista.

A personal transformation does not automatically make someone a specialist.

Y una colección de seguidores tampoco.

Nor does a large following.

Sin embargo, hemos llegado a un punto en el que una persona puede presentarse frente a una cámara, contar una historia de superación y, minutos después, ofrecer un método para que miles de personas hagan exactamente lo mismo.

Yet, we have reached a point where a person can appear on camera, share a story of overcoming adversity, and—minutes later—offer a method for thousands of others to do exactly the same thing.

El problema no es compartir una experiencia.

The problem is not sharing an experience.

El problema es confundir experiencia personal con autoridad universal.

The problem is confusing personal experience with universal authority.

Recuperar la herramienta

Retrieve the tool

No necesitamos desconfiar de toda ayuda.

We need not be wary of all forms of help.

Tampoco necesitamos despreciar la escritura, la reflexión personal, los grupos de acompañamiento o las herramientas que pueden ayudarnos a comprender nuestra propia historia.

Nor do we need to dismiss writing, personal reflection, support groups, or the tools that can help us understand our own stories.

Necesitamos algo mucho más sencillo y, al mismo tiempo, mucho más difícil:

We need something much simpler—and, at the same time, much more difficult:

criterio.

discernment.

Una herramienta genuina no necesita prometer que funcionará igual para todos.

A genuine tool need not promise to work the same way for everyone.

No necesita garantizar una fecha de transformación.

It need not guarantee a specific date for transformation.

No necesita convertir cada dificultad en un testimonio de éxito.

It need not turn every hardship into a success story.

Y, sobre todo, no debería tener miedo de decir:

And, above all, it should not be afraid to say:

«Esto quizá no sea suficiente. Necesitas otro tipo de ayuda.»

«This might not be enough. You need a different kind of help.»

Esa frase, aunque parezca comercialmente inconveniente, es probablemente una de las mayores señales de honestidad que puede ofrecer alguien que acompaña a otra persona.

That statement, however commercially inconvenient it may seem, is likely one of the greatest signs of honesty someone offering support can provide.

Porque quien realmente comprende la complejidad del dolor sabe que no existe una llave universal para todas las puertas.

For anyone who truly understands the complexity of pain knows that there is no universal key for every door.

El verdadero negocio

The real deal

El mercado del bienestar seguirá creciendo.

The wellness market will continue to grow.

Seguirán apareciendo nuevos métodos, nuevas fórmulas y nuevas promesas.

New methods, new formulas, and new promises will keep appearing.

Y mientras exista una persona desesperada por dejar de sufrir, habrá alguien dispuesto a venderle una solución rápida.

And as long as there is someone desperate to stop suffering, there will be someone willing to sell them a quick fix.

Por eso la discusión no debería ser si escribir ayuda.

That is why the discussion shouldn’t be about whether writing helps.

La discusión tampoco debería ser si una determinada técnica puede resultar útil.

Nor should the discussion be about whether a particular technique might be useful.

La pregunta verdaderamente incómoda es otra:

The truly uncomfortable question is something else:

¿Qué clase de sociedad hemos construido para que incluso nuestro dolor tenga que convertirse en un producto?

What kind of society have we built, where even our pain has to become a product?

Hemos aprendido a medirlo todo.

We have learned to measure everything.

La productividad.

Productivity.

El rendimiento.

Performance.

El éxito.

Success.

Los seguidores.

Followers.

Los resultados.

Results.

Y ahora pretendemos medir también cuánto tardamos en sanar.

And now, we try to measure how long it takes us to heal, too.

Pero hay cosas que no deberían someterse a la lógica de la productividad.

But there are things that should not be subjected to the logic of productivity.

El duelo necesita tiempo.

Grief takes time.

La pérdida necesita tiempo.

Loss takes time.

El perdón necesita tiempo.

Forgiveness takes time.

La reconstrucción necesita tiempo.

Rebuilding takes time.

Y algunas heridas necesitan algo que ningún cuaderno, ningún curso de treinta días y ninguna frase motivacional puede sustituir:

And some wounds need something that no notebook, no thirty-day course, and no motivational phrase can replace:

ser escuchadas, comprendidas y acompañadas adecuadamente.

to be heard, understood, and properly supported.

Escribir puede abrir una puerta.

Writing can open a door.

Reflexionar puede ayudarnos a cruzarla.

Reflecting can help us walk through it.

Pero nadie debería vendernos la mentira de que conoce de antemano cuánto tardaremos en llegar al otro lado.

But no one should sell us the lie that they know beforehand how long it will take us to reach the other side.

Porque el dolor humano no es un producto.

Because human pain is not a product.

Y sanar tampoco debería serlo.

And healing shouldn’t be one, either.

EL PENSADOR

The thinker

Hay momentos en que pensar también significa incomodar.

There are times when thinking also means causing discomfort.
