Disappear, breathe, and start over.

COLUMNISTA
There are days when you don’t want to leave anywhere.
Solo quiere desaparecer un rato.
You just want to disappear for a while.
No contestar mensajes.
Not answer messages. Not explain the silence. Not pretend everything is fine just because someone asked, “How are you?”
Disappearing, at times, has nothing to do with giving up.
Tiene que ver con necesitar silencio.
It has to do with needing silence.
With closing the door, turning off the phone, and being alone with that version of yourself that has been waiting weeks for a moment to speak.
Quizás por eso existen las pausas.
Perhaps that is why pauses exist.
Because there are kinds of exhaustion that aren’t cured by sleeping eight hours.
Hay cansancios que vienen de sostener demasiado.
There are kinds of exhaustion that come from holding too much up.
From saying yes when we wanted to say no. From smiling when something hurt. From keeping going when, deep down, we just wanted to sit on the floor and breathe.
Y entonces uno desaparece.
No para que lo extrañen.
No para provocar preguntas.
No para castigar a nadie.
And then you disappear. Not so you’ll be missed. Not to provoke questions. Not to punish anyone.
Desaparece para poder escucharse.
Disappear so you can hear yourself.
To remember what silence feels like when it isn’t filled with worries. To breathe.
A deep breath—one of those that seem small but, for a few seconds, bring us back to our bodies.
Sometimes, starting over doesn’t look like moving to a new city, quitting a job, or making a definitive decision. Sometimes, starting over is something much smaller.
Levantarse.
Bañarse.
Abrir la ventana.
Preparar café.
Contestar un mensaje pendiente.
Salir a caminar sin saber exactamente hacia dónde.
Y descubrir que, aunque nada afuera haya cambiado, algo adentro empieza a acomodarse.
Get up. Bathe. Open the window. Make coffee. Reply to a pending message. Go for a walk without knowing exactly where. And discover that, even though nothing outside has changed, something inside begins to settle into place.
Perhaps we don’t need to rebuild our entire lives in a single day. Perhaps it is enough to rebuild this morning.
Después, esta tarde.
Y luego mañana.
After that, this afternoon. And then tomorrow.
There is a thought I like to turn to when life weighs too heavily:
Not everything that comes to a halt is lost.
There are also necessary pauses. The kind that let us breathe before we return.
Because yes, perhaps one day we’ll have to disappear for a while. But hopefully, we’ll know how to come back.
No siendo quienes éramos antes del cansancio.
Sino alguien que aprendió a escucharse.
Not as the people we were before the exhaustion set in, but as someone who has learned to listen to themselves.
Someone who understood that resting is also a way of moving forward. And that starting over doesn’t always mean having strength.
Sometimes, it simply means having the courage to take a first step. Even if it’s small. Even if it still hurts. Even if no one notices.
Porque hay comienzos que suceden en silencio.
Y quizás los más importantes sean esos.
Because there are beginnings that happen in silence. And perhaps those are the most important ones.
The ones no one sees.
The ones that begin when we close our eyes, take a deep breath, and tell ourselves—almost in secret:
“Esta vez voy a volver por mí.”
“This time, I’m coming back for myself.”
