Delcy Rodríguez arrived in New York with a broad smile. She maintained it for several days, amidst encounters, conversations, and a diplomatic agenda packed with meetings.

But the smile lasted only until Donald Trump began speaking about Venezuela.

From the podium of the United Nations General Assembly, the U.S. president once again brought one of the most sensitive episodes for the current Venezuelan government to the international stage: the U.S. operation that resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores.

Mientras Trump hablaba, las cámaras enfocaron a Rodríguez.

As Trump spoke, the cameras focused on Rodríguez.

El contraste fue evidente.

The contrast was striking.

The woman who had arrived in New York smiling was now listening, with a serious expression, as the U.S. president publicly recounted Maduro’s downfall, defended the operation, and once again used harsh words against the man who had for years led the government of which she was a part.

Delcy Rodríguez’s smile was gone.

Naturally, a facial expression cannot reveal what someone was thinking at that precise moment. Yet, from a journalistic standpoint, the image was deeply symbolic: Trump was speaking from the podium, Rodríguez was listening from the hall, and Maduro—the man around whom much of Venezuelan power had revolved for years—was no longer in Caracas.

The agenda that brought Rodríguez to New York, however, was packed with forward-looking issues: relations with Washington, oil, investment, debt, and the reconstruction of a Venezuelan economy in need of foreign capital.

And therein lies the great contradiction of this story.

While Trump was recounting to the world the operation that ended the Maduro government, Delcy Rodríguez was in the United States seeking avenues for negotiation regarding a post-Maduro Venezuela.

Hours later, an image emerged that would have been even harder to imagine just months earlier:

Donald Trump y Delcy Rodríguez, sentados frente a frente.

Donald Trump and Delcy Rodríguez, sitting face-to-face.

La política tiene esas ironías.

Politics is full of such ironies.

In the morning, words capable of wiping away a smile are heard from the podium.

By nightfall, those who spoke them and those who heard them might find themselves sharing the same table.

Ahora falta escuchar a Delcy Rodríguez.

Now, it is time to hear from Delcy Rodríguez.

For Donald Trump has already presented his version of events in Venezuela to the United Nations.

La próxima palabra será de ella.

The next word belongs to her.
