AI and I: Chronicle of a Mature Relationship

Every time I open social media and read about Artificial Intelligence, I am struck by a mixture of bewilderment and the immediate urge to turn off the screen. On one hand, there are the doomsayers who paint it as the monster of a workplace apocalypse; on the other, the peddlers of empty promises who talk of armies of «autonomous agents» making you rich while you sleep.
Limits must be placed on ignorance, and the best way to do so is by bringing technology down to the level of everyday reality—with the ease of someone seasoned by years of managing actual projects, media outlets, and cultural structures, rather than relying on desktop-tutorial theory. After all, let’s be honest: if you were shortsighted or gullible enough to swallow anything, you might end up believing that bleach cures COVID simply because a poorly fed algorithm spouted it at you with the voice of an oracle.
No le pidas peras al olmo / Don’t ask for pears from an elm tree.
Working with AI isn’t about expecting miracles or handing over your critical thinking for safekeeping. It’s about knowing exactly what you’re dealing with and what demands to set.
In my daily grind, technology is part of a mechanism that leaves no room for mediocrity. With the tools I regularly use—ranging from Google (which I’ve loved since its inception and which remains the backbone of knowledge seeking) to the chat tools that support everything from operational tasks to creative sparks—the rule is clear: nothing slips through the cracks. If you approach it looking to be coddled, AI will simply play along and tell you what you want to hear (as I often see when younger users interact with it seeking quick validation). But if you set clear boundaries, demand rigor, and rely on your own judgment, the system stops being a sycophantic echo and becomes a sharp mirror.
Do they mess up sometimes? Of course. It happened to me recently with Grok: I hadn’t used it for a couple of months—even though I’d had it fine-tuned—and when I came back, it seemed to have gone on vacation to the moon. Strange characters, total amnesia, and a loop of robotic apologies. What did I do? I didn’t waste time: you correct it, you demand better, or you change course. You don’t ask an elm tree for pears.
El espejo y quien sostiene el timón / The mirror and the one holding the helm
AIs are neither magical entities nor autonomous employees that think for you. They are processing mirrors.
When you build companies or agencies, coordinate teams, produce content, or drive cultural projects, you know full well that technology isn’t there to replace your voice or your judgment. Its true power is unleashed when you turn it into an operational assistant that spares you the mechanical friction—such as breaking down a complex article, structuring formats, or testing out different angles—while you keep a firm hand on the helm.
Less talk of the apocalypse, fewer sappy guru clichés, and more putting technology to work with high standards. In the end, it comes down to the same old thing: who is steering the ship, and having the good sense not to fall for cheap gimmicks.
