THE THINKER: RUNNING HER BACK

Cuando son muy veloces los cambios tecnológicos, y en paralelo se hacen más y más complejos, el ciudadano común –aunque a veces los especialistas también se sienten indefensos- advierte que él, y peor aún, sus hijos desde edades muy tempranas, están en un estado de indefensión inquietante.

When technological changes are very fast, and in parallel they become more and more complex, the common citizen -although sometimes the specialists also feel defenseless- notices that he, and worse still, his children from very early ages, are in a disturbing state of helplessness.

Es el escenario de hoy. Ya hay consecuencias muy graves. Y la sensación general es la de un modo de intercomunicación social donde ya no hay peligro ni riesgos, sino consecuencias concretas instaladas y rápidas para crecer, que nos obligan, usando una preocupación popular, a “correrla de atrás”.

It is today’s scene. There are already very serious consequences. And the general feeling is that of a mode of social intercommunication where there is no longer any danger or risk, but concrete consequences installed and quick to grow, which force us, using a popular concern, to «run it behind.»

Es muy vasto el asunto como para sintetizarlo en una simple columna de opinión, sobre todo si quien la escribe, es mi caso, sin educación avanzada ni información suficiente.

The subject is too vast to synthesize it in a simple opinion column, especially if the person who writes it, is my case, without advanced education or sufficient information.

Pero creo que aplicando sólo el sentido común, hay un aspecto acerca del cual uno puede exponer algún aporte que impulse a la reflexión general y sobre todo de quienes están a la cabeza de la nueva tecnología.

But I think that applying only common sense, there is an aspect about which one can present some contribution that encourages general reflection and especially those who are at the forefront of the new technology.

El despliegue de aparatos muy fáciles de manipular y cada día con precios más accesibles al público en general –esto también impulsado por la llamada “inteligencia artificial”- ha seducido de manera conmovedora a los niños y adolescentes que tienen acceso a ellos y los usan casi siempre sin adecuado control de adultos.

The deployment of devices that are very easy to manipulate and each day with prices that are more accessible to the general public -this is also driven by the so-called «artificial intelligence»- has seduced in a moving way the children and adolescents who have access to them and use them almost always without adequate adult control.

Obviamente, para esta población atraída, la adicción está en los distintos juegos y formas en apariencia divertidas e inofensivas de relacionarse con el mundo exterior. Los menores acceden a ese universo sofisticado, colorido, audaz, incorporándolo a sus celulares o sus tabletas. ¿A qué mundos oscuros se exponen si operan sin control familiar? Infinitos y, en demasiados casos, con terribles consecuencias: desde la pornografía infantil y adolescente, a formas rebuscadas de prostitución, de incitación a la violencia convirtiéndola prácticamente en una cultura y hasta en la agrupación de virtuales esclavos de adultos repulsivos o miembros de tribus con códigos que, en edades precoces, conducen a la construcción de seres humanos con personalidades patológicas.

Obviously, for this attracted population, the addiction is in the different games and apparently fun and harmless ways of relating to the outside world. Minors access this sophisticated, colorful, bold universe, incorporating it into their cell phones or tablets. What dark worlds are they exposed to if they operate without family control? Infinite and, in too many cases, with terrible consequences: from child and adolescent pornography, to elaborate forms of prostitution, incitement to violence, practically turning it into a culture, and even the grouping of virtual slaves of repulsive adults or members of tribes with codes that, at an early age, lead to the construction of human beings with pathological personalities.

Suele ocurrir que los menores, más allá de su estatus social o económico, son, en su mayoría, pícaros y siempre prestos a copiar aquello que “está de moda”. Y si de algo se vuelven prácticos es de escapar de la vigilancia paterna o materna, en el caso de que exista, y no les cuesta demasiado trabajo hallar “sus huecos de acción liberada”.

It often happens that minors, regardless of their social or economic status, are mostly mischievous and always ready to copy what is «in fashion». And if they become practical about anything, it is escaping from paternal or maternal supervision, if it exists, and it does not take them too much trouble to find «their gaps for liberated action.»

Hay un punto a destacar: el rastro de cualquier hecho repudiable se inicia en el hogar. Por supuesto la educación puede hacer mucho, pero, además de cierto atraso que se constata en sus armas para corregir conductas destructivas, comienza su trabajo cuando los educandos ya adquirieron aunque sea las habilidades y las adicciones primarias, prendidas a su personalidad como garrapatas.

There is one point to highlight: the trail of any reprehensible act begins at home. Of course, education can do a lot, but, in addition to a certain delay that is noted in its weapons to correct destructive behaviors, its work begins when the students have already acquired even the primary skills and addictions, attached to their personality like ticks.

Dicho esto, y como simple observador atento de nuestra realidad social, ¿cuánta confianza depositaría uno en las familias que deben estar informadas de este fenómeno, deben tener y transmitir a sus hijos valores constructivos y no deben confundir “libertad creativa” con “déjalo hacer, que se entretiene y no molesta”, mientras el niño o el adolescente manipulan sus aparatos con absoluta impunidad, convirtiéndose en propicias víctimas de todas las consecuencias que detallé antes?

Having said this, and as a simple attentive observer of our social reality, how much trust would one place in families that must be informed of this phenomenon, must have and transmit constructive values ​​to their children and must not confuse «creative freedom» with «let him do it»? , who is entertained and does not bother”, while the child or adolescent manipulates their devices with absolute impunity, becoming propitious victims of all the consequences that I detailed before?

No puedo ser optimista si presto atención a lo que veo cotidianamente.

I cannot be optimistic if I pay attention to what I see every day.

Ya hay contagio social. Y como la tecnología –“inteligencia artificial” en sus aristas más potencialmente destructivas- se desarrolla a una velocidad por ahora impensable para la respuesta de la familia o de la educación, ante mí se levanta un oscuro tornado que puede causar daños irreparables para las generaciones y sociedades futuras y, al fin, para la civilización tal como la hemos ido entendiendo, a caballo del crecimiento también de nuestra inteligencia en el marco de la evolución de la especie.

There is already social contagion. And as technology – “artificial intelligence” in its most potentially destructive aspects – develops at a speed unthinkable for the time being for the response of the family or education, before me rises a dark tornado that can cause irreparable damage for generations. and future societies and, finally, for civilization as we have come to understand it, straddling the growth of our intelligence within the framework of the evolution of the species.

Me gustaría, cuanto menos, que estas deshilvanadas reflexiones dieran empuje a gente más preparada y así, debatiendo y corrigiendo, pero con prisa, podamos sentir que realmente estamos haciendo algo más que “correrla de atrás”.  

I would like, at least, that these disjointed reflections give a boost to more prepared people and thus, debating and correcting, but in a hurry, we can feel that we are really doing something more than «running it from behind».
