(El arte de dar voz a los datos) (The art of giving a voice to data)

Imagine for a moment a sculptor standing before a raw block of marble. At first glance, there is nothing but cold, heavy stone. Yet, for the artist, every strike of the chisel is a decision, a revelation, and an act of deep listening to uncover the form already dwelling within.

For a long time, we have been sold the idea that research is a cold task—a mechanical exercise of applying statistical formulas and rigid protocols. We were taught to fear the chaos of the field and to rely solely on the neutrality of figures. But what happens when we turn off our calculators and allow ourselves to truly observe the world around us?

The truth is that any research process goes far beyond the scientific method and statistical rigidity; research is, intrinsically, a creative act.

The artisan’s workshop: Where true knowledge is born

The true art of research lies not in the massive collection of information, but in the precise moment of structuring it. It is at this point that the researcher moves beyond the role of mere collector to become an artisan—someone who selects, connects, shapes chaos, and crafts a narrative from the fragments of the reality uncovered.

No observation we make occurs in a vacuum; it entails an interpretation—an inevitable placement within a schema or frame of reference that gives it meaning. Far from being an obstacle to scientific study, this reflects the pre-existence of factors that structure thought, a foundational mental reality, and a prior background or horizon that inform our understanding of the world.

As Heidegger (2004) aptly maintains, «to be human is to be interpretive.» This means that interpretation is not merely a «tool» we use occasionally to acquire knowledge, but rather our natural mode of being. Every cognitive endeavor is simply the expression of a continuous, unfolding interpretation of the world around us.

«ESTRUARTE» and the architecture of knowledge

When we grasp this, structuring ceases to be a mere bureaucratic formality and transforms into a unique art form. Thus emerges an endogenous description—one born from within and fueled by the voice and living information of each interviewee. This is what we might call *ESTRUARTE* (Struct-Art), a concept that perfectly encapsulates what Dr. Nieves (2005) termed the «artistry of research.» As he articulated in his doctoral thesis, the human mind works with data much like a sculptor works with marble, constructing both individual and general structures that imbue the knowledge of our sociocultural and educational worlds with meaning.

At this juncture, it becomes evident that structuring constitutes the true heart of the research process. It is both map and destination—the compass revealing how theoretical synthesis emerges from categories and subcategories that engage in a dialogue with epistemic dimensions. Three fundamental keys come into play during this creative journey:

Data curation: Deciding what to keep and what to discard so the reader grasps the essential message—an artistic process much like that of a film editor or a museum curator.
Text architecture: Organizing chapters, concept maps, and diagrams requires a profound sense of proportion, harmony, and beauty to make knowledge accessible and digestible.
Scientific storytelling: Cold data alone remains silent. It is the researcher’s ability to weave a human story that generates true impact and empathy in the reader.

Awakening the magic in educational and cultural research

Investigating the realms of education and culture requires us to dare to unleash our creativity. Ultimately, the pursuit of human science is an act of courage that borders on magic.

Let us conclude this journey with the words of the renowned writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who reminds us of the essence of looking beyond the obvious:

“Sólo se ve bien con el corazón. Lo esencial es invisible a los ojos.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

“One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
