Ever since humans discovered they could transform their environment through ingenuity, every era has produced inventions capable of changing the way we live.

Some made movement easier; others enabled us to share words with thousands of people, overcome distances, light up the night, fight diseases, or communicate instantly with someone on the other side of the planet.

And after thousands of years of invention, something curious happened: many of these inventions ended up combined into a single device we carry in our pockets.

La rueda: el mundo comenzó a moverse / The wheel: the world began to move.

Around 3500 BC, in Mesopotamia, we find some of the earliest evidence of the wheel.

It seems simple from our modern perspective, but the principle behind it proved fundamental for transportation and, subsequently, for countless mechanisms and machines.

Humanity began to move in a new way.

La imprenta: las palabras comenzaron a viajar / The printing press: words began to travel.

In the mid-15th century, Johannes Gutenberg developed his movable-type printing system in Europe.

Books could be reproduced in far greater quantities than when they had to be copied by hand.

Las ideas encontraron entonces una nueva velocidad.

Ideas then gained a new speed.

Knowledge could travel from one city to another and pass from one generation to the next through thousands of printed pages.

Various steam engines were developed during the 17th and 18th centuries. Later, James Watt introduced significant improvements that greatly increased their efficiency.

Steam power drove factories and modes of transport, becoming one of the great symbols of the Industrial Revolution.

Human beings no longer relied exclusively on muscle power, animals, wind, or water currents to generate movement.

El telégrafo: el mensaje llegó antes que la persona / The telegraph: the message arrived before the person.

A different kind of revolution emerged during the 19th century.

The electric telegraph made it possible to transmit messages over vast distances without the need for someone to physically carry a letter to its destination.

The dots and dashes of Morse code seem rudimentary compared to modern-day WhatsApp or email.

Pero aquello fue extraordinario.

But it was extraordinary.

For the first time, information could travel far faster than the messenger.

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received one of the fundamental patents related to the telephone.

Ya no bastaba con enviar señales escritas.

Sending written signals was no longer enough.

Now, we could hear a voice from miles away.

Conversation no longer depended on two people being in the same room.

La bombilla: conquistamos parte de la noche / The light bulb: we conquered part of the night.

Electric lighting was the result of the work of numerous researchers and inventors during the 19th century.

Thomas Edison was a pivotal figure in the development of a commercially practical incandescent light bulb and, above all, of systems capable of bringing electric lighting to homes and businesses.

Night no longer necessarily meant the end of human activity.

Radio added another dimension.

A single broadcast could simultaneously reach thousands—and later, millions—of people.

Noticias, discursos, música, deportes y entretenimiento entraron directamente a los hogares.

News, speeches, music, sports, and entertainment entered homes directly.

For decades, sitting by the radio also meant sitting before the world.

La televisión: ahora también podíamos verlo / Television: now we could see it, too.

The 20th century added moving images to that revolution.

Television transformed events taking place hundreds or thousands of kilometers away into images that could be watched from the living room.

News, sporting events, wars, elections, music, and entertainment became part of an audiovisual culture shared by millions of people.

Not all major technological advances served to transport or communicate.

In 1928, Alexander Fleming observed the antibacterial effect of mold that would lead to the development of penicillin.

Subsequently, other scientists made it possible to turn that discovery into a treatment produced on a large scale.

Antibiotics would forever transform medicine in the fight against numerous bacterial infections.

Internet: las redes comenzaron a convertirse en una sola / Internet: the networks began to merge into one

Internet tampoco apareció de repente.

The Internet did not appear suddenly, either.

It was the result of decades of research and the work of numerous scientists and engineers.

By late 1969, four computers were already connected via the initial ARPANET. Network technologies continued to evolve over the following years, and subsequently, TCP/IP enabled the interconnection of different networks.

On January 1, 1983, ARPANET made its historic transition to TCP/IP.

A transformation had begun that would ultimately connect the entire planet.

The Internet allowed information, documents, images, sounds, and later, videos to circulate between computers located vast distances apart.

And then came the combination that would once again change our habits.

El teléfono celular: la comunicación comenzó a caminar con nosotros / The mobile phone: communication began to walk with us.

The telephone had conquered distance, yet it remained tethered to a single location.

El celular rompió esa última cadena.

The mobile phone broke that final chain.

Ya no teníamos que buscar un teléfono.

We no longer had to go looking for a phone.

El teléfono venía con nosotros.

The phone came with us.

Then came text messaging, cameras, touchscreens, and, finally, the smartphone permanently connected to the Internet.

Y ahí ocurrió algo extraordinario.

And that is when something extraordinary happened.

The device that began to swallow the others

Miremos nuestro teléfono.

Let’s look at our phone.

¿Dónde quedó la cámara fotográfica?

Where did the camera go?

Está ahí.

It’s right there.

¿El teléfono?

The phone?

También.

It’s there too.

¿La radio?

The radio?

Ahí está.

There it is.

¿La televisión?

The television?

También.

That’s there too.

¿El periódico?

The newspaper?

Cabe completo.

It fits right in.

¿La calculadora?

The calculator?

Ahí.

Right there.

¿El reloj?

The watch?

También.

There too.

¿El mapa?

The map?

Now it even tells us where we are and how to get there.

¿La biblioteca?

The library?

Podemos consultar millones de páginas.

We can consult millions of pages.

¿La música?

The music?

Miles de canciones caben en el bolsillo.

Thousands of songs fit in our pocket.

¿El correo?

The mail?

Llega inmediatamente.

It arrives instantly.

¿La videollamada?

Video calls?

They let us see someone on the other side of the world while we talk to them.

Even music channels that held huge sway over young people for decades—like MTV—ended up competing with a new reality: audiences no longer needed to wait in front of the TV to watch a specific music video.

Internet permitió buscarlo cuando quisiera.

The Internet made it possible to look it up whenever they wanted.

Y ahora llegó la inteligencia artificial / And now, artificial intelligence has arrived.

La historia todavía no ha terminado.

The story is not over yet.

Modern phones feature processors capable of performing artificial intelligence functions: processing images, recognizing voices, translating, organizing information, and assisting users with tasks that, just a few years ago, seemed like science fiction.

Primero llevamos el teléfono al bolsillo.

First, we moved the phone into our pockets.

Después metimos Internet dentro del teléfono.

Then, we put the Internet inside the phone.

Ahora estamos introduciendo también inteligencia artificial.

Now, we are introducing artificial intelligence as well.

¿Y qué vendrá después?

And what comes next?

Es imposible saberlo con certeza.

It is impossible to know for sure.

But from the wheel that began to turn thousands of years ago to the small device we hold in our hands today, there lies a single, enduring human impulse:

Hacer posible mañana aquello que ayer parecía imposible.

to make possible tomorrow what seemed impossible yesterday.

La rueda movió objetos.

The wheel moved objects.

La imprenta multiplicó las palabras.

The printing press multiplied words.

La máquina de vapor movió la industria.

The steam engine drove industry.

El telégrafo aceleró los mensajes.

The telegraph accelerated messages.

El teléfono transportó nuestra voz.

The telephone carried our voices.

La radio llevó esa voz a millones.

Radio broadcast that voice to millions.

La televisión añadió las imágenes.

Television added images.

Internet conectó las redes.

The Internet connected networks.

And the smartphone ultimately brought much of that history together in the palm of our hand.

Perhaps this is one of the greatest symbols of our technological evolution:

it took us thousands of years to create all those inventions, yet barely a few decades to fit many of them into a pocket.
