THE THINKER: US AND THE PLANET

Inicio esta columna con una aclaración: ignoro si la cuestión a la que me referiré está incluida de algún modo en el proyecto de reforma de la educación. La razón es que, como tantos, desconozco en detalle ese proyecto, más allá de su zarandeo cotidiano en los medios y entre los políticos. Ojalá forme parte de la formación integral de niños y jóvenes en los años por venir.

I start this column with a clarification: I do not know if the issue to which I will refer is somehow included in the education reform project. The reason is that, like so many, I am unaware of this project in detail, beyond its daily tossing around in the media and among politicians. Hopefully it will be part of the integral formation of children and young people in the years to come.

Me refiero a la relación de los seres humanos, desde que adquieren uso de razón, con la naturaleza. O con el medio ambiente, como les gusta ahora a algunos describirla.

I refer to the relationship of human beings, since they acquire the use of reason, with nature. Or with the environment, as some now like to describe it.

Una cosa es indiscutible: el tema hoy figura con una intensidad hasta hace poco impensada entre los ciudadanos de cualquier país. Los uruguayos no somos una excepción. La razón es elemental. Desde tiempos recientes se han producido en diversas zonas del planeta todo tipo de desastres naturales, como si hubiese habido una orden divina: terremotos, inundaciones, incendios forestales, cambios en el clima habitual, mayor información precisa sobre las hipotéticas pero probables consecuencias y una inquietud que se va generalizando.

One thing is indisputable: the issue today appears with an intensity that was unthinkable until recently among the citizens of any country. Uruguayans are not an exception. The reason is elementary. Since recent times, all kinds of natural disasters have occurred in various areas of the planet, as if there had been a divine order: earthquakes, floods, forest fires, changes in the usual climate, more precise information on the hypothetical but probable consequences and a concern which is generalizing.

Creo que acercar aportes acerca de la cuestión, que provienen de un pasado muy lejano, pueden contribuir a entender mejor lo que está pasando.

I think that bringing contributions about the issue, which come from a very distant past, can help to better understand what is happening.

Los hechos son casi infinitos, pero me remitiré a uno solo por la fuerza que tiene como ejemplo. Según Huxley, El Líbano fue llamado en los Salmos de la Biblia como “el país de los cedros”. Durante la década de 1950, este filósofo y escritor, recorrió las enormes colinas que representan la casi totalidad de este territorio pequeño que consiste en una franja costera al pie de altas montañas que suponía pobladas de cedros: sólo halló dos o tres espacios cerrados en los que había alrededor de dos mil cedros. Y escribió Huxley: “Es todo lo que queda del bosque gigantesco que proporcionó al Rey Salomón madera para su templo y que durante siglos abasteció a Egipto, donde no crecen otros árboles que las palmeras, debido a la madera que este país necesitaba”.

The facts are almost infinite, but I will refer to just one because of the force that it has as an example. According to Huxley, Lebanon was called in the Psalms of the Bible as «the country of cedars.» During the 1950s, this philosopher and writer toured the enormous hills that represent almost all of this small territory that consists of a coastal strip at the foot of high mountains that he supposed were populated with cedars: he only found two or three closed spaces in the that there were about two thousand cedars. Es obvio que la evolución de la educación, de la ciencia y de la tecnología ha modificado la acción humana. Sin embargo, atadas a la idea de progreso material, así como han hecho que se entendiera mejor el riesgo de esta actitud también han multiplicado las posibilidades de hallar mecanismos más exactos para multiplicar la riqueza de algunos tanto como los daños a la naturaleza, disfrazado todo de inocente progreso, creando al paso de los siglos culturas que –e incluyo otra simplificación- sólo han sumado más ataques y destrucciones de un planeta que parece tener signado su destino, aunque muy lejano todavía para la perspectiva de un ser humano, es verdad, en la autodestrucción.

However, tied to the idea of ​​material progress, just as they have made the risk of this attitude better understood, they have also multiplied the possibilities of finding more exact mechanisms to multiply the wealth of some as much as the damage to nature, disguising everything. of innocent progress, creating over the centuries cultures that -and I include another simplification- have only added more attacks and destructions of a planet that seems to have its destiny marked, although still very distant from the perspective of a human being, it is true, in self destruction.

Pues bien, si quienes hemos asumido, aun en el mero plano personal, una actitud diferente, pretendemos crear otra cultura no encontraremos un camino mejor que la educación.

Well then, if those of us who have assumed, even on a mere personal level, a different attitude, intend to create another culture, we will not find a better path than education.

Quedándonos aquí, deberíamos decir que no será completa y eficaz ninguna reforma que no tenga en cuenta esta cuestión, de tal modo que, dentro de una, dos o tres generaciones hayamos corregido el camino y las actitudes que tanto influyen sobre ella.

Staying here, we should say that any reform that does not take this issue into account will not be complete and effective, in such a way that, within one, two or three generations, we have corrected the path and the attitudes that influence it so much

Muchos filósofos recorren hoy diversos territorios. En sus conferencias, por fortuna, hay una coincidencia de impacto: que cada ciudadano tome para sí la responsabilidad de pensar sobre los hechos brutales que el hombre sigue tirando encima de la naturaleza, no sólo de modo meramente práctico, sino también, si tiene la capacidad, de manera metafísica, ética y estética.

Many philosophers today cover various territories. In his conferences, fortunately, there is a coincidence of impact: that each citizen take responsibility for thinking about the brutal facts that man continues to throw at nature, not only in a merely practical way, but also, if he has the capacity, metaphysically, ethically and aesthetically.

Y cierro con otra frase de Huxley: “Es sumamente importante que seamos capaces de pensar acerca de estas cosas con la totalidad de nuestra naturaleza, no meramente como tecnólogos, no meramente como personas que quieren comer y poseer subproductos de la madera, sino como seres humanos totales dotados de una naturaleza moral, estética y de una inteligencia inclinada hacia la filosofía.

And I close with another phrase from Huxley: «It is extremely important that we be able to think about these things with the totality of our nature, not merely as technologists, not merely as people who want to eat and possess wood by-products, but as beings.» full humans endowed with a moral, aesthetic nature and an intelligence inclined towards philosophy.
