THE THINKER: MYTHOMANIC POLITICS

Volviendo sobre viejas lecturas de filósofos de distintas épocas –Bacon, Kingsley, Huxley, Russell- he advertido la antigüedad de un problema que hoy padece la sociedad uruguaya y que yo, confundido tal vez por lo veloz, sonoro y poco pensante del mundo moderno, había creído algo instalado a partir de la restauración democrática luego de la dictadura.

Going back over old readings of philosophers from different times -Bacon, Kingsley, Huxley, Russell- I have noticed the antiquity of a problem that Uruguayan society suffers today and that I, perhaps confused by the speed, sound and little thinking of the modern world, I had believed something installed from the democratic restoration after the dictatorship.

Me refiero a un sistema político, o a la mayoritaria actitud de los políticos, al que puede calificarse sin pudor, entre otras cosas, de mitómano.

I am referring to a political system, or to the majority attitude of politicians, which can be shamelessly described, among other things, as a mythomaniac.

¿Qué es la mitomanía? La tendencia morbosa a desfigurar, engrandeciéndola, la realidad de lo que se dice.

What is mythomania? The morbid tendency to disfigure, magnifying it, the reality of what is said.

Esto es notable, porque se convierte en prueba irrefutable, en el comportamiento de la enorme mayoría de los políticos, sea desde el gobierno, sea desde la oposición y aun sosteniendo opiniones encontradas, de su mala intención al referirse a las reformas que el país necesita.

This is remarkable, because it becomes irrefutable proof, in the behavior of the vast majority of politicians, whether from the government, or from the opposition and even holding conflicting opinions, of their bad intention when referring to the reforms that the country needs. .

Dejando a un lado las diferencias, todos coinciden en que es imprescindible construir una serie de reformas sin las cuales, sencillamente, se abriría un futuro: reforma de la educación, reforma de al menos parte del sistema judicial, reforma del Estado reduciéndolo al tamaño de la utilidad para todos y abandonando su papel de “fábrica de empleos a cambio de votos”, reforma de la seguridad social, reforma del sistema impositivo, reforma del régimen de atención a la salud pública, reforma de las políticas de seguridad y tantas más.

Putting differences aside, everyone agrees that it is essential to build a series of reforms without which, quite simply, a gloomy future would open up: reform of education, reform of at least part of the judicial system, reform of the State reducing it to the size of utility for all and abandoning its role as «factory of jobs in exchange for votes», reform of social security, reform of the tax system , reform of the public health care system, reform of security policies and many more.

Por supuesto que de todas ellas se habla abundantemente. Por supuesto que se presentan ideas, proyectos, aspiraciones. Por supuesto que algunas, algo desprolija e inacabadamente expuestas, se llegan a discutir en el Parlamento, obvio que sólo para llegar al estancamiento. Y por supuesto que hay dos principales factores que impiden todo avance productivo: la capacidad cada día más relativa de quienes, desde un lugar técnico o especializado, asumen la responsabilidad de indicar las direcciones adecuadas; y la ya desproporcionada e idiota disputa, sólo con la ambición del poder por delante, que exhiben esos actores políticos, en el gobierno o en la oposición, sobre quienes, en una democracia republicana que queremos preservar –o al menos eso creemos algunos- para no desviar el mejor camino a seguir que ha elegido la sociedad que integramos.

Of course, all of them are talked about abundantly. Of course ideas, projects, aspirations are presented. Of course some, somewhat untidy and incompletely exposed, are even discussed in Parliament, obviously only to reach a stalemate. And of course there are two main factors that prevent any productive progress: the increasingly relative capacity of those who, from a technical or specialized position, assume the responsibility of indicating the appropriate directions; and the already disproportionate and idiotic dispute, only with the ambition of power ahead, exhibited by those political actors, in the government or in the opposition, over whom, in a republican democracy that we want to preserve -or at least that is what some of us believe- to not deviate from the best path to follow that the society we are part of has chosen.

Uno de los autores preferidos a quien releo con frecuencia, ha escrito que, a decir verdad desde hace siglos, el hombre se niega a aceptar que todo comienza con un estado de conciencia, sólo alcanzable a través de la educación integral, acerca de “los problemas humanos fundamentales”: ¿Quiénes somos? ¿Qué es la naturaleza humana? ¿Cómo deberíamos estar vinculados al planeta en el que vivimos? ¿Cuál es la relación entre nosotros y la naturaleza? ¿Cómo hemos de vivir juntos de manera satisfactoria?  ¿Cómo habremos de resolver nuestras potencialidades individuales?

One of my favorite authors, whom I often reread, has written that, to tell the truth, for centuries man has refused to accept that everything begins with a state of consciousness, only attainable through comprehensive education, about «the fundamental human problems”: Who are we? What is human nature? How should we be linked to the planet we live on? What is the relationship between us and nature? How are we to live together satisfactorily? How shall we resolve our individual potentialities?

Al respecto, por ejemplo, dice Huxley: “Si empezamos con estos problemas y les damos un lugar de primacía, podemos reunir información de una gran cantidad de disciplinas que están actualmente aisladas por completo. Creo que es el único medio de crear una forma de educación integrada”.

In this regard, for example, Huxley says: “If we start with these problems and give them a place of primacy, we can gather information from a large number of disciplines that are currently completely isolated. I believe that it is the only way to create an integrated form of education.”

Siempre aparece –y lo seguirá haciendo- la educación.

Education always appears –and will continue to do so.

Por acá el mundillo político y tecnócrata habla mucho de ella. Mientras tanto, pasan los años, pasan las décadas, y sigue en falta. No resuelve el problema.

Around here the political and technocratic scene talks a lot about her. Meanwhile, the years go by, the decades go by, and it is still missing. It doesn’t solve the problem.

Como he decidido escribir esta columna confesando que redundo y que sólo me limitaré a describir, tal vez en mayor detalle, algo que todos sabemos y estamos dejando que siga ocurriendo como en un corso de carnaval, volveré a algo que más de una vez he citado del aludido Huxley: “Es un asunto de crear puentes. Es muy provechoso. Hay una palabra, surgida en el viejo Colegio de Sacerdotes de Roma, pontifex, o sea, precisamente, quien o quienes construyen puentes. Y en los puentes es propicio, natural diría, el encuentro entre el arte y la ciencia, entre hechos objetivamente observados y la experiencia inmediata, entre la moral y la evaluación científica, por ejemplo. Porque hay toda clase de puentes y encuentros a construir”.

As I have decided to write this column confessing that I am redoubling and that I will only limit myself to describing, perhaps in greater detail, something that we all know and we are letting it continue to happen as in a carnival parade, I will return to something that I have cited more than once of the aforementioned Huxley: “It is a matter of creating bridges.

Ahora bien: si problemas hay que dejar atrás son el dogmatismo, la hipocresía, la mera búsqueda de poder, la eliminación del adversario, visto como un enemigo, o sea actitudes muy incorporadas a nuestra cultura política.

Now, if there are problems to leave behind, they are dogmatism, hypocrisy, the mere search for power, the elimination of the adversary, seen as an enemy, that is, attitudes that are deeply embedded in our political culture.

Y, claro, al alcanzar este aspecto de la situación, llego, y no puedo evitarlo, al perfecto círculo vicioso donde nos seguimos enchastrando como en el barro de una lucha vergonzante, plagada de ignorancia y de cinismo, donde los políticos que nos han tocado –o, mejor dicho, que hemos llevado dónde están, lo que nos hace cómplices- parecen gozar descendiendo cada día más en el abismo de la negación obtusa de la benevolencia, de la incompetencia intelectual y de la decadencia moral.

And, of course, when I reach this aspect of the situation, I arrive, and I cannot avoid it, at the perfect vicious circle where we continue to get stuck as if in the mud of a shameful fight, full of ignorance and cynicism, where the politicians who have touched us –or, better said, that we have taken where they are, which makes us accomplices- they seem to enjoy descending every day more into the abyss of the obtuse denial of benevolence, of intellectual incompetence and moral decadence.
