THE THINKER: THE FRAGILE BALANCE

Tengo edad suficiente como para haber vivido en plena madurez intelectual, y además en ejercicio de mi oficio periodístico, el extenso, oscuro, amenazante y fabricante de novelas de terror –algunas que, sin embargo, se acercaron peligrosamente a hacerse realidad- proceso histórico que dio en llamarse “La guerra fría”.

I am old enough to have lived in full intellectual maturity, and also in the exercise of my journalistic profession, the extensive, dark, threatening and manufacturer of horror novels -some that, however, came dangerously close to becoming a reality- historical process that came to be called «The Cold War».

Había dos botones rojos que, de ser apretados, harían desaparecer el planeta.

There were two red buttons that, if pressed, would make the planet disappear.

Uno estaba en manos de los Estados Unidos, entonces abanderado de los triunfadores de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y adalid de las ideas liberales y del capitalismo. El otro lo tenía a disposición el bloque soviético y el comunismo desparramado por diversos sitios.

One was in the hands of the United States, then the champion of the victors of the Second World War and champion of liberal ideas and capitalism. The other was available to the Soviet bloc and communism scattered throughout various places.

No aburriré al lector, sobre todo al joven que sólo leyó relatos diversos sobre estas circunstancias en los libros. Para contribuir en algo sobre sus aciertos o errores de apreciación, debería escribir, tal vez, otros varios libros.

I will not bore the reader, especially the young man who only read various stories about these circumstances in books. In order to contribute something about his successes or errors of appreciation, he should write, perhaps, several other books.

No hubo hecatombe nuclear ni desaparición del planeta, como cualquiera ha podido comprobar estos años, porque a mediados de la década de 1980 comenzó la debacle, causada por sus propios problemas y, en mi humilde opinión, su mismísima esencia, del régimen comunista. La imagen icónica de esa peripecia fue la caída del Muro de Berlín, que dividía Alemania en dos por el acuerdo al que habían llegado, derrumbado Hitler y casi desaparecido su socio inesperado, Japón, las potencias occidentales y su sorpresivo aliado de los últimos años bélicos, la propia Unión Soviética, que comenzó la conflagración sonriéndole al nazi loco y debiendo destrozar sus ejércitos cuando el aparente “amigo” invadió sin piedad a Stalin su territorio.

There was no nuclear catastrophe or disappearance of the planet, as anyone has been able to verify these years, because in the mid-1980s the debacle began, caused by its own problems and, in my humble opinion, its very essence, of the communist regime. The iconic image of that incident was the fall of the Berlin Wall, which divided Germany in two due to the agreement they had reached, Hitler collapsed and his unexpected partner, Japan, the Western powers and his surprising ally of the last years of war almost disappeared. , the Soviet Union itself, which started the conflagration smiling at the crazy Nazi and having to destroy his armies when the apparent «friend» mercilessly invaded Stalin’s territory.

Desde aquellos tiempos, hasta hace muy poco, la imagen de una hecatombe rápida y final que no dejaría nada en pie fue una amenaza cada día menos verosímil y más lejana. A nivel de los principales organismos internacionales se firmaron decenas, quizás cientos de acuerdos y pactos de no agresión, así como se procedió al desarme nuclear de muchísimos países: el último, y no deja de ser curioso, en entregar sus armas nucleares –que nada tienen que ver con las plantas nucleares existentes para generar diversos tipos de energía para el abastecimiento de las sociedades y sus actividades pacíficas- fue Ucrania.

From those times, until very recently, the image of a quick and final catastrophe that would leave nothing standing was a threat that was less credible and more distant every day. At the level of the main international organizations, dozens, perhaps hundreds, of agreements and non-aggression pacts were signed, as well as the nuclear disarmament of many countries: the last, and it is still curious, to hand over its nuclear weapons -which nothing have to do with existing nuclear plants to generate various types of energy to supply societies and their peaceful activities – was Ukraine.

Sin embargo, hay al menos cuatro naciones que mantienen un nunca descrito armamento nuclear: Rusia, Estados Unidos, China y Corea del Norte.

However, there are at least four nations that maintain never-before-described nuclear weapons: Russia, the United States, China, and North Korea.

Así las cosas, un  buen día, no sin antes haberlo planificado con tiempo como ya se sabe, un psicótico fascista con deseos de perpetuarse en el poder y expandir su país, y que nada tiene que ver con el comunismo en el que lo criaron, llamado Vladimir Putin, suerte de presidente vitalicio de Rusia, a la que sueña derramándose sobre más territorios vecinos y asociado a una horda de cleptómanos inmorales y poderosos, invadió precisamente Ucrania. Tampoco insistiré en la historia de ambos países que ya ha sido zarandeada, según el punto de vista de cada quien, durante las recientes semanas: sólo diré que el primer Imperio Ruso zarista se formó en Ucrania, que mucho tiempo después alcanzó su independencia, y su capital fue Kiev.

Thus, one fine day, but not before having planned it in advance, as is already known, a fascist psychotic with the desire to perpetuate himself in power and expand his country, and who has nothing to do with the communism in which he was raised, called Vladimir Putin, a sort of president for life of Russia, which he dreams of spreading over more neighboring territories and associated with a horde of immoral and powerful kleptomaniacs, invaded precisely Ukraine. Nor will I insist on the history of both countries, which has already been shaken, according to each person’s point of view, during recent weeks: I will only say that the first Tsarist Russian Empire was formed in the Ukraine, which long after achieved its independence, and its capital was Kiev.

El punto es que el psicótico ha lanzado amenazas claras acerca de la posibilidad de apretar el escalofriante botón rojo, mientras dibuja confusamente su intención de no bajar la persiana en Ucrania, si la conquista, sino seguir adelante hasta… ¿dónde?

The point is that the psychotic has issued clear threats about the possibility of pressing the chilling red button, while confusingly drawing his intention not to lower the blind on Ukraine, if he conquers it, but to continue on until… where?

Y acá viene el aspecto inadmisible. Todo lo que el mundo occidental y oriental democrático ha hecho es desplegar una actitud solidaria sobre quienes huyen de Ucrania: un enorme y conmovedor éxodo de cientos de miles de mujeres, hombres y niños aterrorizados, gran cantidad de ellos separados del resto de sus familias.

And here comes the unacceptable aspect. All the democratic Western and Eastern world has done is display solidarity for those fleeing from Ukraine: a huge and shocking exodus of hundreds of thousands of terrified women, men and children, many of them separated from the rest of their families.

Las medidas económicas y hasta cibernéticas anunciadas para cercar a Putin y sus socios y obligarlos a detenerse, aunque tengan algún efecto será a largo plazo y no despiertan demasiado optimismo ni convocan a la serenidad de ánimo. Al mismo tiempo, y mientras se multiplican los discursos, las declaraciones de condena y una suerte de castigo moral sobre la renovada Madre Rusia, sólo que sin los zares, todo en paralelo al sutil e inquietante silencio de China, la OTAN hace mutis por el foro y empezamos a sentirnos envueltos en un peligro de extinción que hasta nos va haciendo olvidar las polémicas y cuidados por la pandemia.

The economic and even cybernetic measures announced to surround Putin and his associates and force them to stop, even if they have some effect, will be long-term and do not arouse too much optimism or call for serenity of mind. At the same time, and while the speeches, declarations of condemnation and a kind of moral punishment on the renewed Mother Russia are multiplying, only without the tsars, all in parallel to the subtle and disturbing silence of China, NATO is mutis for the forum and we begin to feel involved in a danger of extinction that is even making us forget the controversies and care caused by the pandemic.

¿Entre nosotros, tan lejos y tan cerca según se mire? Los llamados progresistas, o de izquierda, en realidad bolcheviques que no comprenden que el mundo y cierta gente cambió, mirando para arriba y chiflando. ¡Creen que Putin es bolchevique! ¡No les toquen a Rusia! En fin, si algo faltaba para caracterizarlos sin error…

Between us, so far and so close depending on how you look at it? The so-called progressives, or leftists, actually Bolsheviks who don’t understand that the world and certain people changed, looking up and whistling. They think Putin is Bolshevik! Don’t touch Russia! In short, if something was missing to characterize them without error…
