EDITORIAL: THE THINKER

ALIMENTAR LA CONFIANZA / FEEDING CONFIDENCE

Con una despedida honorífica oficial, los científicos, investigadores y técnicos que integraban el grupo que asesoró al gobierno en la lucha contra la pandemia –conocido por GACH, Grupo Asesor Científico Honorario- han hecho mutis por el foro y han retornado a sus actividades habituales.

With an official honorable farewell, the scientists, researchers and technicians who made up the group that advised the government in the fight against the pandemic – known as GACH, Honorary Scientific Advisory Group – have left the forum and have returned to their usual activities.

En circunstancias que vivimos, no puede sorprender la excepcionalidad, por amplitud y sinceridad, del agradecimiento que ha surgido de la ciudadanía.

In the circumstances that we live in, the exceptionality, due to its breadth and sincerity, of the gratitude that has emerged from the public cannot be surprising.

Más allá de matices, acuerdos y desacuerdos siempre resueltos por un sólido consenso, el trabajo de este grupo significó para el país una suerte de bendición, trayendo, cuando más se necesitaba, estudios, información imprescindible y recomendaciones y sugerencias al poder político en cuyas manos siempre estuvieron las decisiones. Nadie puede negar que durante todo este tiempo se sintió el cuidado y el abrigo, en el sentido más literal que uno pueda imaginar, que nacía del trabajo y la capacidad y dedicación de estos profesionales.

Beyond nuances, agreements and disagreements always resolved by a solid consensus, the work of this group meant a kind of blessing for the country, bringing, when it was most needed, studies, essential information and recommendations and suggestions to the political power in whose hands there were always the decisions. No one can deny that during all this time the care and shelter was felt, in the most literal sense that one can imagine, that it was born of the work and the capacity and dedication of these professionals.

Luego, al crecer los peligros planteados por el virus y sus mutaciones, surgieron unas diferencias crecientes entre las recomendaciones de los asesores y las medidas que tomaba el gobierno, en paralelo a los roces, día a día más fuertes, entre el oficialismo y la oposición.

Then, as the dangers posed by the virus and its mutations grew, growing differences arose between the recommendations of the advisers and the measures taken by the government, in parallel with the clashes, which were stronger every day, between the ruling party and the opposition .

Y se llegó al punto final del GACH.

Puede parecer curioso, pero creo que en este final, que nadie deseaba, si algo no faltó fue franqueza. El Poder Ejecutivo jamás ocultó que luchaba por vencer a la pandemia en el frente sanitario, tanto como por impedir que la economía del país, por la situación creada y sus perspectivas, nos condujese a la quiebra; por su parte, los científicos y técnicos, si bien agotaron su cortesía, respeto y comprensión, nunca ocultaron que sentían cada vez más distancia entre sus advertencias y consejos y la atención que el gobierno les prestaba.

It may seem curious, but I think that in this ending, which nobody wanted, if something was not lacking, it was frankness. The Executive Power never hid that it was fighting to defeat the pandemic on the health front, as well as to prevent the country’s economy, due to the situation created and its prospects, from leading us to bankruptcy; For their part, the scientists and technicians, while exhausting their courtesy, respect and understanding, never hid that they felt more and more distance between their warnings and advice and the attention paid by the government.

De los juegos politiqueros, ya toda una cultura entre nosotros, prefiero no escribir una sola palabra porque todos sabemos que no vale la pena.

Of the political games, and a whole culture among us, I prefer not to write a single word because we all know that it is not worth it.

Y entonces, ante el hecho central consagrado, llega la pregunta: ¿cómo se ejercerá la coordinación a partir de ahora en ese doble frente sanitario y económico?

And then, faced with the central fact enshrined, the question arises: how will coordination be exercised from now on on this double health and economic front?

El Presidente de la República, siguiendo los benevolentes dichos del coordinador del GACH, doctor Rafael Radi, ha confirmado que “habrá un teléfono rojo”, un modo popular y muy fácil de entender para decir que, enfrentados a una necesidad imperiosa, aquellos que se han despedido atenderán la llamada del gobierno –personalmente, no de forma institucional- para dar su opinión.

The President of the Republic, following the benevolent sayings of the GACH coordinator, Dr. Rafael Radi, has confirmed that «there will be a hotline», a popular and very easy to understand way of saying that, faced with an urgent need, those who have been fired, they will answer the call of the government – personally, not institutionally – to give their opinion.

Si pienso en cierta confusión que sigue reinando por las sorpresas que, sin previo aviso, nos tira encima la pandemia, y causan, además, una desconfianza de la gente que poco ha menguado desde el agravamiento de la situación general, el “teléfono rojo”, sin más, parece poca cosa.

If I think of a certain confusion that continues to reign due to the surprises that, without prior notice, the pandemic throws at us, and also causes a distrust of the people that has diminished little since the worsening of the general situation, the «red telephone» , without further ado, it seems like a small thing.

Si bien en los últimos días las cifras que se manejan –cantidad de estudios, diagnósticos, vacunados y fallecimientos, número de camas ocupadas en los CTI, etcétera- parecen indicar una declinación de la curva ascendente que a todos alarma, al menos yo me siento incapaz de echar fuera la preocupación. Más aún: estoy persuadido de que en ese sentimiento me acompaña la mayoría de ciudadanos.

Although in recent days the figures that are handled – number of studies, diagnoses, vaccinated and deaths, number of beds occupied in ICUs, etc. – seem to indicate a decline in the upward curve that alarms everyone, at least I feel unable to cast out worry. Furthermore, I am persuaded that the majority of citizens accompany me in that sentiment.

Si observo lo que debería ser la estructura político-sanitaria de combate, está claro que necesito más información precisa acerca de cómo será las cosas.

If I look at what the combat political-health structure should be, it is clear that I need more precise information about how things will be.

Si me detengo en el proceso de vacunación y su aceleramiento y expansión en edades, es innegable que, quizás todavía pálidamente, se abren las nubes oscuras a la luz del sol de la esperanza.

If I stop at the vaccination process and its acceleration and expansion in ages, it is undeniable that, perhaps still pale, the dark clouds open in the sunlight of hope.

En cuanto a la economía, no veo con claridad el camino, aunque siento que la prudencia  guía por ahora los caminos elegidos.

As for the economy, I do not see the path clearly, although I feel that prudence guides the chosen paths for now.

Pero esto es planetario. Y al observarse los distintos procesos que han seguido países del continente que se quiera, también es innegable que, con estrategias diferentes, todos se han visto obligados a marchas y contramarchas.

But this is planetary. And when observing the different processes that countries of the continent have followed, it is also undeniable that, with different strategies, all have been forced to march and countermarch.

Sólo algo es irrefutable: a quienes les va mejor, aun atravesando esa vida como encima de un gusano loco a la que nos ha obligado el virus, son aquellos que han logrado, al fin, una actitud social mayoritaria de confianza y de respeto por medidas de seguridad muy claras para la salud, que no requieren dejar por el camino a la economía entera.    

Only one thing is irrefutable: those who do better, even going through that life like on top of a crazy worm to which the virus has forced us, are those who have finally achieved a majority social attitude of trust and respect for measures very clear safety guidelines for health, which do not require leaving the entire economy on the way.
