Este hombre que hizo tanto en tan poco tiempo –y legó al tango una influencia sólida sustentada en su calidad artística- nació en Manresa, Barcelona, el 8 de marzo de 1886; pianista, compositor y director de orquesta, a los diecinueve años tomó la batuta para dirigir un orfeón integrado por ciento cincuenta músicos, que tuvo fama breve pero muy entusiasta en Cataluña.
