UN ESTORNUDO ELECTORAL Y EL SHERIFF DEL MUNDO PIDE CACAO

SANTOS MIGUEL GONZALEZ. Escritor, editorialista, geopolítico mordaz. PUERTO RICO

Donald Trump is attempting to project an untarnished image of his administration ahead of the midterm elections. What concerns me most is that he seems to believe he himself is running for the presidency, positioning himself as the savior—addressing problems that, in part, his own policies helped create.

He travels through various states—particularly those with strong Republican support—as if he were carrying a torch of peace. He makes grand, sweeping promises, treats his rallies like major victories, and acts as though he has already triumphed, even before the citizens have finished casting their votes.

What he may fail to realize is that he could be moving dangerously close to a political precipice.

¡Achúuuuu!

Achoo!

¡Salud, señores republicanos!

Bless you, gentlemen of the Republican Party!

It seems a simple electoral sneeze is making the windows of the U.S. Congress rattle. And if the Democrats were to let out a political fart, some Republicans might just go running in search of oxygen.

¡Caramba! ¿Qué está pasando en Estados Unidos?

Good grief! What is happening in the United States?

With the legislative elections of November 3, 2026, just days away, millions of Americans are exercising their right to vote early. The long lines seen in various places reflect an electoral mobilization that demands attention.

And here begins the trouble for those who thought these elections would be a walk in the park.

Could it be that voters are tired of so many promises? Is the economy speaking louder than the speeches? Or perhaps some politicians mistook the applause of their own followers for the will of the entire nation?

Watch out—filling a rally is one thing, but filling the ballot boxes is something else entirely!

At stake in these elections are all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate. Republicans are defending their control of Congress, while Democrats are looking to wrest the majority from them.

The possibility that Republicans could lose the House of Representatives is very much on the table, though the battle for the Senate presents a more complex scenario for the Democrats.

Y ahora surge una pregunta interesante:

And now, an interesting question arises:

Are some Republicans wishing that Donald Trump would dial back his rhetoric on immigration, tariffs, and political confrontations?

¿Será que están pidiendo cacao?

Could it be that they’re asking for mercy?

For a long time, the MAGA movement seemed convinced that its leader could walk on water—bestowing blessings upon voters while his followers marveled at such a political miracle.

¡Aleluya, hermanos!

Hallelujah, brothers! But take heed: walking on water is one thing; walking all over the ballot box is quite another. And votes do not multiply like loaves and fishes.

Donald Trump has a peculiar way of exercising power. At times, he resembles a character from an old American Western film.

He arrives in town, tips his hat, tightens his gun belt, draws his revolver, and announces:

—¡Aquí mando yo! ¡Soy el sheriff!

“I’m in charge here! I’m the sheriff!”

Pero alguien le responde:

But someone replies:

—Señor, aquí ya tenemos sheriff.

“Sir, we already have a sheriff here.”

—¡Pues ahora tendrán otro!

“Well, now you’ll have another one!”

—¿Y quién lo nombró?

“And who appointed him?”

—¡Yo mismo!

“I did—myself!”

¡Vaya democracia de película!

Some cinematic version of democracy, that!

The problem arises when this attitude is applied to international relations, tariffs, and immigration.

After all, a nation may be powerful, but that does not mean it can solve all its problems through threats, trade levies, and expulsions.

The United States needs to trade with Mexico, Canada, Europe, and many other regions of the world.

While tariffs can serve as tools for negotiation or for protecting specific industries, they can also drive up the price of goods, increase business costs, and ultimately end up hurting the consumer.

¿Y quién paga cuando los costes aumentan?

And who pays when costs go up?

Often, it is the ordinary citizen who heads off to work every single day.

The very same person who, later on, has to perform miracles just to fill their supermarket shopping cart!

Ahora vamos al asunto migratorio.

Now, let’s turn to the issue of immigration.

Donald Trump made irregular immigration one of the central themes of his political discourse.

But here arises a question that seems simple, yet carries enormous economic consequences.

What happens when you expel a significant portion of the people who work the land, build homes, clean establishments, and sustain various productive activities?

¿Quién recoge las cosechas? ¿Quién trabaja en las fincas? ¿Quién participa en la construcción de viviendas? ¿Quién sustituye esa mano de obra?

Who harvests the crops? Who works on the farms? Who takes part in the construction of housing? Who replaces that labor force?

Of course, there are U.S.-born Americans who perform these jobs. No one should overlook their hard work.

But there is also a reality: the U.S. economy relies significantly on immigrant labor.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the 2020–2022 period, approximately 42% of hired agricultural workers lacked authorization to work legally in the country.

¡Cuarenta y dos por ciento!

Forty-two percent!

It is worth noting that this figure refers to agricultural workers hired for the specific crops included in the survey—not the entire U.S. agricultural workforce.

This does not mean that immigration laws should be ignored. It means that any policy of mass deportations must take into account the economic consequences of removing workers from essential sectors.

Because a harvest won’t wait for a presidential speech to end.

And a house isn’t built with applause, either.

Aquí entra la matemática 101.

This is where basic math comes in.

If you need one hundred workers and you expel forty without having replacements, how do you expect to maintain the same level of production?

¿Con discursos? ¿Con aranceles? ¿Con un sombrero MAGA?

With speeches?
With tariffs?
With a MAGA hat?

¡Caramba, señor presidente! ¡Las lechugas no se recogen solas!

Good grief, Mr. President! Lettuce doesn’t harvest itself!

This is where I believe immigration policy requires more economic intelligence and less grandstanding.

Why not establish a registration system for certain immigrants who are already working in the United States? Let them identify themselves, register, and comply with the law.

They could be granted temporary work permits—for instance, for six months—renewable according to conditions set by legislation.

Their employers would be required to fulfill their obligations, pay the appropriate taxes, and be subject to oversight.

Meanwhile, those who pose a genuine threat to public safety would face the appropriate legal proceedings, including deportation where warranted.

¿Dónde está lo complicado?

What is so complicated about that?

Naturalmente, una reforma semejante necesitaría legislación, controles y recursos administrativos.

Naturally, such a reform would require legislation, oversight mechanisms, and administrative resources.

But it is far more sensible to discuss solutions than to treat millions of people as if they were all the same.

A person who works does not become a criminal simply by virtue of working.

And no one is a criminal because they are Black, white, Asian, Latino, or belong to any other community.

Criminality is determined by facts and the law—not by skin color, a surname, or nationality.

An irregular immigration status is a legal matter that must be addressed, but it does not automatically turn every individual into a violent criminal.

Does a farmworker who has spent years harvesting food pose the same threat as someone convicted of a serious crime?

¡Por favor, señores!

Come on, folks!

No confundamos las papas con las batatas.

Let’s not compare apples and oranges.

Another matter that often gets overlooked is the economic flow between the United States and its neighbors.

Immigrants work, consume, pay rent, buy food, use services, and, in many cases, send a portion of their earnings to their families back home.

¡Claro que envían dinero! ¿Y qué tiene de extraordinario?

Of course they send money!
And what is so extraordinary about that?

Remittances are simply a part of international economic relations.

This money can be converted into Mexican pesos, used to purchase goods and services, or help support countless families.

Not all of that money flows directly back to the United States, but commercial and financial exchanges link both economies.

México compra productos estadounidenses. Estados Unidos compra productos mexicanos. Canadá participa en ese intercambio.

Mexico buys U.S. products. The United States buys Mexican products. Canada participates in this exchange.

Y las empresas necesitan mercados, trabajadores y consumidores.

And businesses need markets, workers, and consumers.

That is why, when a leader uses tariffs as if they were bullets in a revolver, they must remember that a trade war can cause damage on both sides of the border.

The sheriff might fire the first shot, but the bill ends up being paid by the town!

There is also another issue that deserves reflection: our relationship with work.

We live in a society where some people want to start out directly as supervisors, managers, or business owners.

¡Excelente tener aspiraciones!

It’s great to have aspirations!

But it is one thing to aspire to lead a company, and quite another to expect to reach the executive office without having learned how the business actually works.

Sylvester Stallone faced economic hardship before achieving success in film.

Dwayne Johnson has also shared that he once had only seven dollars in his pocket. His production company is, in fact, named Seven Bucks Productions.

Son ejemplos de perseverancia.

These are examples of perseverance.

That does not mean that all young people reject work. Many study, work, and strive to get ahead in a challenging economy.

Pero el mensaje permanece:

But the message remains:

Dignified work does not lose its value simply because it is performed with one’s hands.

Un agricultor merece respeto.

A farmer deserves respect.

Un albañil merece respeto.

A construction worker deserves respect.

Un trabajador de limpieza merece respeto.

A cleaner deserves respect.

And an immigrant who honestly fulfills their responsibilities also deserves respect.

Not everyone will become a business owner, a president, or a supervisor.

Someone has to grow the food that ends up on our tables.

—Señor presidente, ¿usted quiere fortalecer la economía estadounidense?

—Mr. President, do you want to strengthen the U.S. economy?

—¡Por supuesto!

—Of course!

—¿Y quiere que las empresas produzcan más?

—And do you want companies to produce more?

—¡Naturalmente!

—Naturally!

—¿Y necesita trabajadores?

—And do you need workers?

—¡Muchísimos!

—A great many!

—Then why don’t you set up a system that allows those who meet the requirements to work legally?

—¡Porque tenemos que proteger nuestras fronteras!

—Because we have to protect our borders!

—And who said that granting work permits means eliminating borders?

Silencio.

Silence.

—Otra preguntita, señor presidente.

—One more little question, Mr. President.

—¡Otra vez tú!

—You again!

—If you deport workers, raise tariffs, and then have to import products because you don’t have enough labor, couldn’t the consumer end up paying more?

—¡Muchacho, tú preguntas demasiado!

—Boy, you ask too many questions!

—¡Para eso soy el Niño Preguntón!

—That’s why I’m the Questioning Kid!

And before leaving, the boy looks toward Congress.

—Gentlemen of the Republican Party, what happened to those who used to walk on water?

—¡Muchacho, estamos en campaña!

—Boy, we’re in the middle of a campaign!

—And why do you want the President to tone down his rhetoric a bit?

—¡Porque hay que ganar las elecciones!

—Because we have to win the election!

—¡Ahhh! ¿Entonces ahora están pidiendo cacao?

—Aha! So now you’re asking for a truce?

The 2026 legislative elections represent a significant test for Donald Trump’s administration.

This is not about re-electing the president, as his term is not directly at stake.

Rather, it is about determining who will control the House of Representatives and the Senate for the next two years.

A Republican defeat in either chamber could limit Trump’s ability to advance parts of his legislative agenda.

Pero todavía falta contar los votos.

But the votes have yet to be counted.

Long lines at the polls do not guarantee a Democratic victory.

Nor does the enthusiasm of MAGA supporters guarantee a Republican win.

Citizens have a variety of concerns: the economy, prices, immigration, jobs, security, and the future of their families.

Y muchos saben perfectamente por quién desean votar.

And many know exactly whom they wish to vote for.

This is where grandiloquent rhetoric faces its true test.

Because it is one thing to speak from a stage surrounded by supporters, and quite another to heed the message that millions of citizens cast silently into the ballot box.

Political power is neither private property nor a heavenly throne reserved for those who believe they possess the eternal blessing of their followers.

Congress, likewise, is not a ranch where a sheriff can bark orders at gunpoint.

It is an institution whose control depends on the will of the electorate.

Y esa voluntad puede cambiar.

And that will can change.

Therefore, before promising mass deportations, tariff wars, and miraculous solutions, it is worth remembering that an economy requires workers, businesses, consumers, and stable trade relations.

Border security and economic growth need not be at odds.

One can secure a border without disparaging the value of labor.

One can enforce the law without casting entire communities under suspicion.

And one can exercise leadership without behaving as if one owns the planet.

Pero aquí surge otra interrogante.

But here, another question arises.

Trump appears to be fighting on two fronts: one at his rallies, where he seeks to keep the Republican flame alive, and another in the political arena, where any unfavorable outcome could spark fresh controversy.

Would he accept his party’s defeat without question?

¿O terminaríamos presenciando otra batalla de reclamaciones, abogados y tribunales?

Or would we end up witnessing yet another battle involving claims, lawyers, and the courts?

We cannot foresee a legal challenge that does not yet exist, but we can recall that Trump has previously turned to the courts to contest election results.

And the «Inquisitive Kid»—who never misses an opportunity—raises his hand once again.

—Señor presidente, ¿usted ya sabe quién va a ganar?

“Mr. President, do you already know who’s going to win?”

—¡Vamos a ganar!

“We’re going to win!”

—¿Y si pierden?

“And what if you lose?”

—¡Muchacho, no seas negativo!

“Kid, don’t be so negative!”

“Then why does it seem like you’re laying the groundwork to dispute the results?”

—¡Porque tenemos que proteger las elecciones!

“Because we have to protect the elections!”

—¡Ahhh! ¿Ahora resulta que también es clarividente?

“Aha! So, are you also a clairvoyant now?”

¡Nos salvamos, señores!

Well, aren’t we lucky, folks!

We have a president who, in our political satire, seems to know the outcome before the game is even over.

But perhaps the real problem doesn’t lie at the ballot box; rather, it lies in the difficulty some leaders have in acknowledging their own mistakes.

Mr. President, stop closing your eyes to criticism. Own up to your reckless actions, examine your errors, and remember that governing a nation does not mean becoming a king or an absolute deity.

Face the problems plaguing the country you swore to defend.

Meanwhile, the Inquisitive Kid watches the lines at the polling stations, adjusts his hat, and tosses out one last question:

“What’s going on, gentlemen? Is a ‘democratic sneeze’ making the Republican elephant tremble?”

—¡Muchacho, no molestes!

“Kid, stop being a nuisance!”

“Well, you’d better get ready—November 3rd is still to come!”

¡Achúuuuu!

Achoo!

Bless you, gentlemen! And watch out for the next political «fart»—it could leave a stench in the halls of Congress that’s hard to get rid of.

Because this time, it might just shake up more than a few seats.

In a democracy, no one walks on water forever: sooner or later, you have to come back down to earth and answer to the ballot box.
