LA AMBIGÜEDAD POLÍTICA: EL ARTE DE NO COMPROMETERSE CON LAS PROMESAS DE CAMPAÑA

POLITICAL AMBIGUITY: THE ART OF AVOIDING COMMITMENT TO CAMPAIGN PROMISES

When October arrives, so do the promises of politicians, who joyfully announce their campaign commitments…

Many politicians—both local and international—make extravagant, sweeping promises, pledging their word to their fellow party members. They hand out kisses and hugs, and even hold babies—regardless of whether the infants are wet or soiled. What matters is the photo op. Afterward, they can simply bury the hatchet—or rather, cast aside their commitments—leaving behind a pile of broken political promises.

Of course, I am referring to the promises made during the U.S. midterm elections. Then again, if you were to throw all these politicians into a blender, not a single good one would come out!

Furthermore, they have mastered the art of using language so elaborate that it allows them to avoid committing to anything at all. During election campaigns, they promise an earthly paradise, overflowing with jobs, economic resources, and opportunities for every citizen.

“You promised jobs and more food stamps for families in need!”

—¡Un momento! ¿Dónde dije yo que prometí eso?

“Hold on a second! When did I ever promise that?”

“All I said was that, if I won the election, there would be more jobs and greater resources.”

Then the campaign ends, and suddenly they don’t even recognize their own supporters anymore. They go into hiding, only speaking in flowery terms when they’re in front of the press:

“We are working for the people and seeking the necessary resources to help the voters in our community.”

But if you go to see them to ask for help in finding a job, you end up dealing with anyone—except for the politician you actually voted for. And I say this from experience.

That’s when the infamous «fine print» appears—the kind you need a magnifying glass to see. The very same fine print that no one noticed in political ads or heard during campaign rallies:

«Subject to the availability of federal funds, legislative approval, and favorable economic conditions. Furthermore, the fulfillment of these promises depends on the defeated candidate not having already squandered the funds. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee anything.»

¡Qué maravilla de ingeniería política!

What a marvel of political engineering!

Four years go by with the same old rhetoric, and—to borrow a line from Buzz Lightyear—that promise lives on:

¡Al infinito y más allá!

To infinity and beyond!

This happens because the winning candidate lacks the funds to keep their promises, yet the blame somehow falls on the candidate who lost.

And if someone persists in demanding answers, there’s still one final line of defense:

“I never said the jobs would be for you, nor that the increase in food stamps would arrive tomorrow!”

That is how strategic ambiguity works in certain campaigns: promises are announced in giant letters, while the conditions for fulfilling them are hidden in such fine print that you’d need an “electoral microscope” to find them.

And if you don’t believe me, just look at Trump: he blames Biden—who governed from January 2021 until January 20, 2025—and even Obama, who occupied the White House for two terms, between 2009 and 2017. Yet, when he talks about the country’s problems, his own first presidential term—from 2017 to January 20, 2021—seems to remain completely untarnished, as pristine as if it had been bleached white.

As for Donald Trump and his rallies—don’t even get me started.

Trump has an extraordinary knack for turning a political rally into a spectacle where he is the star, the emcee, the hero, and, naturally, the only one deserving of applause.

What’s interesting isn’t just how he says things, but how he contradicts himself—and how he manages to get his followers to cheer, with thunderous applause, even for his most absurd remarks.

Forgive my own odd musings and the daily madness! But this madness has a very clear political purpose: to strip away the rhetoric of candidates who promise the moon during elections, only to find they can’t even locate the ladder to reach it.

Pero el 3 de noviembre de 2026…

But on November 3, 2026…

The “jester-in-chief” could end up left high and dry, having lost control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

And if you ask me whether I’m talking about Trump…

¡Aaaaah!
