The commercialization of festivities and the loss of their true meaning

Is it possible that, as our celebrations grow ever more grand, their true spirit is fading away?

I still look back with nostalgia on the days of my childhood, when autumn heralded the arrival of Durga Puja—one of Bengal’s most significant festivals. All year long, I would wait impatiently for that magical time. The air would turn crisp, a gentle breeze would sweep through the streets, and the delicate scent of *shiuli*—a night-blooming jasmine—would signal that the celebration was near.

Yet, what made it truly special wasn’t the decorations or the gifts; it was the people. Relatives would arrive from far and wide, and our homes would fill with conversation, laughter, and shared memories. The elders would offer us their blessings, and we children would receive these gestures with an indescribable joy. Of course, there were gifts, too—but their monetary value was the least important aspect. What truly mattered was the affection behind the giving.

Today, as I observe these celebrations, I ask myself: at what point did we begin to confuse love with the price of a gift?

Increasing commercialization has profoundly transformed our traditions. Social media showcases perfect celebrations, expensive outfits, and extravagant gifts. Companies seize upon every holiday to drive consumption, while many families feel the pressure to spend more—whether to demonstrate affection or simply to keep up appearances.

Little by little, it seems we have replaced conversations with photographs, blessings with material objects, and family gatherings with Instagram posts. Even children have begun to gauge happiness by the quantity and cost of the gifts they receive.

Yet, this is not about rejecting modernity, nor is it about viewing the exchange of gifts as something inherently negative. The problem arises when consumption ceases to merely accompany a celebration and begins to define it.

Let’s reclaim the magic of simplicity

Perhaps the time has come to ask ourselves what memories we want to leave for future generations. Will they remember the price of a dress, or the laughter shared around a table?

I can still close my eyes and feel that autumn breeze, catch the scent of *shiuli* flowers, and hear the voices of my family members.

Because, in the end, festivities shouldn’t be measured by how much we spend, but by how much love we share.

And you—what do you remember most about the celebrations from your childhood: the gifts you received, or the people with whom you shared those moments?
