The nature of scientific processes and their interrelationships with other fields of knowledge have evolved profoundly throughout history. This dynamism warns us of an imminent risk: attempting to pigeonhole «Science» into a static definition. Any attempt to freeze it in place would not only be strictly temporary but would also cause us to lose sight of the multiple facets, possibilities, and richness associated with it.

¿Qué hace que algo sea «Ciencia»?

What makes something «science»?

Determining the extent to which the label «science» applies to some activities but not others remains a fascinating debate. Some authors propose defining science simply as «what scientists do»—an approach that traps us in a circular argument.

However, recent history demonstrates that scientific rigor is not the exclusive province of closed laboratories. The full acceptance of disciplines such as economics, sociology, and psychology as sciences bears witness to the fact that scientific knowledge is, above all, a constantly expanding territory.

As a dynamic cultural component of society, it is more enriching to understand science not as a closed concept, but as an organized body of knowledge. In this regard, Canclini (1991) does not define science as an isolated physical or natural concept; instead, he approaches scientific and social knowledge through the lenses of anthropology and the sociology of culture. For him, the social sciences operate within transdisciplinary fields governed by methodological rules for interpreting symbolic processes.

Néstor García Canclini’s theoretical proposal (op. cit.) invites us to understand culture and society through a rigorous, contemporary lens. To address the complexity of current social phenomena, his work structures scientific inquiry around three fundamental pillars:

Transdisciplinary nature: Breaks down traditional barriers between disciplines to enrich and better define the objects of study.
Systematization: Promotes the use of clear protocols and formal rules in the observation and interpretation of sociocultural data.
Plurality of paradigms: Recognizes the coexistence of multiple conceptual approaches to comprehensively analyze the dynamics among producers, intermediaries, and consumers.

The following image visually summarizes how these three axes interact to build a robust methodology for cultural analysis.

El Efecto Multiplicador

The Multiplier Effect

If there is one standout feature when analyzing science, it is its cumulative nature. Unlike other human endeavors, scientific knowledge is built upon the shoulders of those who came before. This multiplier effect explains the astonishing, exponential development that the sciences have achieved in our contemporary era.

This characteristic makes it possible to draw a clear boundary between science and other extraordinary fields of culture, as can be seen in the following image:

A historical reflection: If the great painters or musicians of past centuries were to come back to life today, upon viewing the artistic output of the present, they might well conclude that their respective fields have regressed. Art does not progress by accumulating techniques to «surpass» the past—science does.

Tres Pilares Filosóficos para Repensar el Aula

Three Philosophical Pillars for Rethinking the Classroom

To understand how the act of learning and teaching unfolds, it is vital to return to the roots and examine epistemology through the lens of three titans of classical thought:

Heraclitus (540–475 BC): Knowledge is a river.

His major contribution to epistemology reminds us that knowledge is always in flux. In education, this dismantles the notion of absolute and immutable truths; classrooms must be spaces prepared to navigate constant change and transformation.

2.     Socrates (470–339 BC): Truth dwells within.

For Socrates, human knowledge must be grounded in the pursuit of inner happiness and in self-knowledge.

A reflective note: Nowadays, we run the risk of confusing happiness with the accumulation of fleeting experiences—such as traveling, demanding pleasant treatment, and surrounding ourselves with worldly possessions. While external well-being is valid, true happiness lies within. Education, therefore, must teach us to look inward.

3.     Platón (428–384 a.C.): Trascender los sentidos. 3.     Plato (428–384 BC): Transcending the senses.

The philosopher of the Academy maintained that true knowledge resides in the world of ideas. Plato invites us to distrust what is learned merely through the senses and immediate appearances, urging education to foster abstract, critical, and profound thinking.

El Reto de la Educación Actual: Más Allá de la Información

The Challenge of Modern Education: Beyond Information

In a world where information is just a click away and technology evolves at a rapid pace, the primary challenge of education is no longer the transmission of data. Today, the true challenge lies in developing judgment, adaptability, and humanity.

Tres Desafíos Clave

Three Key Challenges

Learning to filter (Critical Thinking): Faced with an overabundance of data and fake news, schools must teach how to question, verify, and synthesize information with an ethical mindset.

Integrating Technology Without Losing Humanity: Artificial intelligence and digital tools are powerful allies, but education must prioritize inherently human skills—empathy, creativity, collaboration, and original thinking.

Learning to Unlearn (Flexibility): Knowledge is no longer static. Educating today means preparing people for professions that do not yet exist and teaching them to continuously adapt to change.

Educational epistemology invites us to uncross our arms and stop conceiving of teaching as the delivery of a finished product. To educate is to set a Heraclitean river in motion, ignite Socratic introspection, and raise our gaze toward Platonic critical thinking. Only in this way will we shape citizens capable of transforming knowledge into a living tool.

Education today must not only produce competent professionals but also conscious citizens capable of navigating uncertainty and using knowledge to solve real-world problems in our environment.
