THE THINKER: SKEPTICISM GROWS

En un país haciendo delicado equilibrio sobre un fino alambre para no precipitarse a una crisis que pueda comprometer el futuro inmediato, hay una mayoría de políticos que, sin pudor alguno, se han adelantado a las fechas previsibles, adecuándolas a su ansiedad y a sus ambiciones, lanzándose a una brutal campaña prelectoral.

In a country delicately balancing on a fine wire so as not to rush into a crisis that could jeopardize the immediate future, there is a majority of politicians who, shamelessly, have anticipated foreseeable dates, adapting them to their anxiety and ambitions, launching into a brutal pre-election campaign.

Mientras tanto, zarandeándose dentro del Parlamento, a la búsqueda de un consenso a esta altura utópico, siguen agitados, perdiendo la respiración lentamente, los proyectos de reforma de la educación, reforma de la previsión social, ideas cruzadas sobre las llamadas “ayudas sociales”, sus características y su extensión, y problemas variopintos a resolver como la falta de inversión, la inflación, los problemas climáticos que están sitiando a la producción y, trencito de última hora que recién arranca, un sistema de salud al borde del colapso.

Acerca de esta última cuestión, día a día sorprende la confusión que ha caído sobre la sociedad en torno a la vacunación, ya constatado el aumento de los casos de Covid y cuando, según se dice, están las vacunas y se recomienda a poblaciones de cierta edad que recurran a ellas lo antes posible. Lo curioso es que la información, antes prolija, centralizada y de fácil acceso, ahora es una cuestión de vecindad: algún amigo, alguien que vive cerca, qué se yo, te informa que descubrió que en tal lugar hay un vacunatorio donde puedes ir, sin agenda, presentar la cédula de identidad e inyectarte.

Regarding this last issue, day by day the confusion that has fallen on society around vaccination is surprising, since the increase in Covid cases has been verified and when, according to what it is said, vaccines are available and they are recommended to populations of a certain age to resort to them as soon as possible. The curious thing is that the information, before long, centralized and easily accessible, is now a matter of neighborhood: some friend, someone who lives nearby, what do I know, informs you that they discovered that there is a vaccination center in a certain place where you can go, without an agenda, present your identity card and inject yourself.

La realidad, enseguida, demuestra que no es tan sencillo, que los errores de sitio, de horarios y demás, no se corresponde a lo que te dice “un amigo que tiene otro amigo que sabe”. En fin, tema para extenderme otro día y que ya está bordeando el ridículo por parte de las autoridades y las instituciones de asistencia médica.

Pero volvamos a los políticos, porque, en medio de semejante escenario, sus expresiones públicas, dirigidas a desprestigiar al oponente, está causando un creciente escepticismo en la población, cuyas consecuencias, el día de las elecciones, muchos de los más activos promotores del discurso agresivo y frontal, parecen no tener en cuenta como un factor quizás decisivo.

But let’s go back to the politicians, because, in the midst of such a scenario, their public expressions, aimed at discrediting the opponent, is causing growing skepticism in the population, the consequences of which, on election day, many of the most active promoters of the discourse aggressive and frontal, they seem not to take into account as a perhaps decisive factor.

Siempre habrá adherentes a un partido político. Siempre habrá fanáticos de ciertas ideas que para ellos serán dogma de fe. Siempre habrá dubitativos que se balancearán con desconcierto y terminarán colocando el voto en un sobre casi por descarte.

Pero el panorama electoral puede complicarse mucho, si ese escepticismo al que hice referencia suma, día a día, más eventuales votantes.

No hay que despreciar al ciudadano, tal vez no demasiado letrado, pero transido su espíritu por la desconfianza.

El mejor cuento escrito por Francisco Paco Espínola, –Rodriguez– da pistas sobre esto; se trata de un imaginario encuentro de un diablo encantador y de habla fácil con un gaucho que ya ha dejado de creer en muchas cosas. Pero el diablo está seguro que lo va a conquistar con su verbosidad.

Rodríguez viene al paso lento de su caballo una tardecita, liando con pereza un cigarrillo, cuando se le aparece un brioso corcel negro, enérgicamente frenado por un jinete de larga capa. El hombre le pregunta –ante la cerrada indiferencia del gaucho, qué quiere para irse con él y ser un hombre poderoso. En rápida sucesión muestra monedas de oro, le hace promesas impresionantes mientras trota sonriente alrededor del otro y, al final, ya cansado, le dice:
