The International Opera Awards in Madrid

Por primera vez en la historia de los Premios Internacionales de la Ópera, el Teatro Real de Madrid ha sido el escenario de la entrega de su décima edición el lunes 28 de noviembre 2022, la primera presencial desde 2019. Hasta ayer, la ceremonia siempre había tenido lugar en el Reino Unido.

For the first time in the history of the International Opera Awards, the Teatro Real de Madrid has been the scene of the delivery of its tenth edition on Monday, November 28, 2022, the first face-to-face since 2019. Until yesterday, the ceremony had always took place in the UK.

Los nominados a premios eran: Igualdad de oportunidades, Filantropía, Ópera redescubierta, Estreno mundial, Ópera digital,  Premio a toda una vida, Cantante femenina, Cantante masculino, Festival (patrocinado por Villa Conchi) Liderazgo, (patrocinado por el Good Governance Institute) Sostenibilidad, Nueva Producción, Talento emergente, (patrocinado por Mazars) Grabación de una ópera completa, Grabación de un recital, Dirección musical, Dirección de escena, Diseño, Premio de los lectores y Compañía de ópera.

The award nominees were: Equal Opportunity, Philanthropy, Rediscovered Opera, World Premiere, Digital Opera, Lifetime Award, Female Singer, Male Singer, Festival (sponsored by Villa Conchi) Leadership, (sponsored by the Good Governance Institute) Sustainability, New Production, Emerging Talent, (sponsored by Mazars) Full Opera Recording, Recital Recording, Musical Direction, Stage Direction, Design, Readers Award and Opera Company.

Las nominaciones y premiados, -toda la ceremonia en inglés- estuvieron salpicados por actuaciones operísticas  de primer nivel. El comienzo fue el Interludio de La vida Breve de Manuel de Falla; el Un bel dí vedremo de Madama Butterfly cantado por la soprano Barno Ismatullaeva;  el No puede ser de La tabernera del puerto por el tenor Iván Ayón Rivas; dúo de Lucia de Lamermoor por la soprano Sabina Puértolas y el tenor Xavier Anduaga.

The nominations and winners – the entire ceremony in English – were punctuated by top-level operatic performances. The beginning was the Interlude from La vida Breve by Manuel de Falla; Madama Butterfly’s Un bel dí vedremo sung by soprano Barno Ismatullaeva; It Can’t Be from La tabernera del puerto by the tenor Iván Ayón Rivas; duet of Lucia de Lamermoor by the soprano Sabina Puértolas and the tenor Xavier Anduaga.

En la segunda parte la Patria opresa de Macbeth; dúo de I Puritani por la soprano Jessica Pratt y el tenor Francesco Demuro; Me llaman la primorosa de El Barbero de Sevilla por Sabina Puértolas;  E Susanna non vien de Le nozze di Figaro por la soprano Nardus Williams y como guinda el Coro de los románticos de Doña Francisquita.

In the second part the oppressed Homeland of Macbeth; duet from I Puritani by soprano Jessica Pratt and tenor Francesco Demuro; They call me the beautiful one from El Barbero de Sevilla by Sabina Puértolas; E Susanna non vien de Le nozze di Figaro by the soprano Nardus Williams and as icing on the cake the Coro de los románticos by Doña Francisquita.

Los premiados.

Cosas de una guerra, por primera vez en la historia de estos premios, dos teatros de ópera de Ucrania se llevan ex aequo el premio a la mejor compañía, el Teatro Académico Nacional de Ópera y Ballet de Lvivy y el Teatro de Ópera y Ballet de Odesa, en reconocimiento a su trabajo realizado en las difíciles circunstancias por las que atraviesan.

Things of a war, for the first time in the history of these awards, two Ukrainian opera houses take ex aequo the prize for the best company, the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet of Lvivy and the Theater of Opera and Ballet of Odesa, in recognition of their work carried out in the difficult circumstances they are going through.

La invasión de Ucrania obligó a cerrar sus teatros, pero las dos compañías premiadas reabrieron recientemente, a pesar de los peligros inherentes a la guerra. El premio fue recogido por representantes de ambos teatros, acompañados por el entusiasmo del público. El editor de la revista Ópera y presidente del jurado, John Allison declaró: “Estoy especialmente agradecido de que hayamos podido reconocer el trabajo de dos destacados teatros de ópera ucranianos, que continúan valientemente haciendo un excelente trabajo en condiciones imposibles.”

The invasion of Ukraine forced the closure of their theaters, but the two award-winning companies recently reopened, despite the inherent dangers of war. The award was collected by representatives of both theaters, accompanied by the enthusiasm of the public. Opera Magazine Editor and Jury President John Allison stated: “I am especially grateful that we have been able to recognize the work of two leading Ukrainian opera houses, who bravely continue to do excellent work under impossible conditions.”

El premio a la trayectoria profesional en homenaje a una carrera legendaria ha sido para la mezzosoprano Dame Janet Baker.  El periodista de la BBC, Petroc Trelawny, mencionó que desde su debut operístico en 1956 hasta su retiro en 1982, la cantante británica construyó su leyenda con sus extraordinarias actuaciones en Glyndebourne y la English National Opera, por su asociación con Benjamin Britten, quien escribió la cantata Phaedra especialmente para ella.

The Lifetime Achievement Award honoring a legendary career has gone to mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker. BBC journalist Petroc Trelawny mentioned that from her operatic debut in 1956 until her retirement in 1982, the British singer built her legend with her extraordinary performances at Glyndebourne and the English National Opera, through her association with Benjamin Britten, who wrote the Phaedra cantata especially for her.

Al recibir el galardón, Dame Janet Baker afirmó: “Recuerdo esos años de trabajo y mi mente está llena de la alegría que me trajeron. Aprendí algo útil y valioso de todos mis colegas y extraño mucho a cada uno de ellos. Siento que esta noche es un regalo muy especial para mí. Gracias.”

Receiving the award, Dame Janet Baker said: “I look back on those years of work and my mind is filled with the joy they brought me. I learned something useful and valuable from all my colleagues and I miss each of them very much. I feel like tonight is a very special gift to me. Thank you.»

La soprano francesa Sabine Devieilhe y el barítono francés Stéphane Degout, recibieron los premios  Cantante Femenina y Cantante Masculino respectivamente; Daniele Rustioni recibió el premio a la Dirección Musical. El premio al talento emergente le ha sido otorgado a la joven soprano británica, Nardus Williams, que actuaba  en la gala cantando un aria de Le nozze di Figaro. El premio de los lectores de la revista Ópera, único premio votado por el público le fue concedido al tenor samoano, Pene Pati.

French soprano Sabine Devieilhe and French baritone Stéphane Degout received the Female Singer and Male Singer awards respectively; Daniele Rustioni received the award for Musical Direction. The award for emerging talent has been awarded to the young British soprano, Nardus Williams, who performed at the gala singing an aria from Le nozze di Figaro. The Ópera magazine readers’ award, the only award voted for by the public, was awarded to the Samoan tenor, Pene Pati.

El Premio al Liderazgo del Instituto de Buena Gobernanza fue otorgado a Nicholas Payne, quien ha dirigido Opera Europa desde 2003 y estuvo a cargo de la Ópera Nacional Inglesa y la Royal Opera House. El premio Filantropía fue para Aline Foriel-Destezet por su continuo apoyo a la música y la ópera.

The Institute of Good Governance Leadership Award was presented to Nicholas Payne, who has directed Opera Europa since 2003 and has been in charge of the English National Opera and the Royal Opera House. The Philanthropy Award went to Aline Foriel-Destezet for her continued support of music and opera.

Michael Spyres recogió el premio de Grabación Recital en solitario por Bari Tenor, una colección de obras para tenor y barítono; el premio de Grabación Ópera completa fue para Le voyage dans la Lune, de Offenbach, del sello Bru Zane.

Michael Spyres collected the Solo Recital Recording award for Bari Tenor, a collection of works for tenor and baritone; the prize for Complete Opera Recording went to Le voyage dans la Lune, by Offenbach, from the Bru Zane label.

La soprano Susan Bullock CBE entregó el Premio Internacional de Ópera Villa Conchi al Festival del Año, a la Ópera de Santa Fe; el premio a la Sostenibilidad le fue otorgado a la Ópera de Gotemburgo.

Soprano Susan Bullock CBE presented the Villa Conchi International Opera Award to the Festival of the Year, to the Santa Fe Opera; the Sustainability award was given to the Gothenburg Opera.

En 2020, la Fundación estableció un Fondo para artistas en dificultades, destinado a subvenciones de emergencia a los beneficiarios de becas anteriores que se enfrentan a problemas financieros debido a la pandemia. En 2021, el Fondo reabrió las solicitudes de subvenciones de manera más amplia a otros artistas jóvenes y emergentes afectados por la crisis.

In 2020, the Foundation established a Fund for Distressed Artists, providing emergency grants to previous grant recipients facing financial hardship due to the pandemic. In 2021, the Fund reopened grant applications more broadly to other young and emerging artists affected by the crisis.

La entrega de premios, retransmitida en directo a través de My Opera Player, plataforma audiovisual del Teatro Real, y por Opera Visión, ha contado con las actuaciones de Nardus Williams, Barno Ismatullaeva, Iván Ayón Rivas, Sabina Puértolas, Xabier Anduaga, Jessica Pratt y Francesco Demuro,  junto a la  Orquesta y Coro Titulares del Teatro Real, dirigidos por José Miguel Pérez Sierra.

The awards ceremony, broadcast live through My Opera Player, the Teatro Real’s audiovisual platform, and by Opera Visión, featured performances by Nardus Williams, Barno Ismatullaeva, Iván Ayón Rivas, Sabina Puértolas, Xabier Anduaga, Jessica Pratt and Francesco Demuro, together with the Teatro Real Main Orchestra and Choir, directed by José Miguel Pérez Sierra.
