XXII Flamenco Biennial of Seville

El primer evento con el que arrancó la XXII Bienal de Flamenco el 8 de septiembre 2022, fue la entrega del Primer Giraldillo Internacional “Ciudad de Sevilla” a Eva Yerbabuena,  de manos del rey Felipe VI, acto que tuvo lugar en los Reales Alcázares.

The first event with which the XXII Bienal de Flamenco started on September 8, 2022, was the delivery of the First International Giraldillo “Ciudad de Sevilla” to Eva Yerbabuena, from the hands of King Felipe VI, an act that took place in the Reales Alcázares.

Se inicia así un premio con el que la Bienal quiere reconocer trayectorias sobresalientes en cualquier disciplina del flamenco. Eva Yerbabuena, con su estreno mundial Re-fracción (desde mis ojos) bajo la dirección escénica de Juan Kruz, dará comienzo a los espectáculos de la Bienal el 10 de septiembre en el Teatro de la Maestranza.

Thus begins an award with which the Biennale wants to recognize outstanding careers in any discipline of flamenco. Eva Yerbabuena, with her world premiere Re-fracción (from my eyes) under the stage direction of Juan Kruz, will kick off the Biennial shows on September 10 at the Maestranza Theater.

Estamos ante una Bienal que da comienzo el 8 de septiembre y que tendrá su colofón el 1 de octubre con un concierto de clausura, de momento sorpresa, en los tinglados del puerto de Sevilla, pero dado que estamos celebrando, ayer precisamente, el 500 aniversario del regreso a Sanlúcar de Barrameda de la nao Victoria al mando de Juan Sebastian Elcano y los dieciocho supervivientes de una de las mayores gestas de la historia de la humanidad, la circunnavegación del globo terráqueo, intuimos que el evento que pondrá cierre a la Bienal estará relacionado con este hecho.

We are facing a Biennale that begins on September 8 and will have its climax on October 1 with a closing concert, surprising at the moment, in the sheds of the port of Seville, but given that yesterday we are celebrating precisely the 500th anniversary of the return Sanlúcar de Barrameda de la Nao Victoria under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano and the eighteen survivors of one of the greatest feats in the history of mankind, the circumnavigation of the globe, we intuit that the event that will close the Biennale will be related to this fact.

Se nota muchísimo la mano de la nueva dirección de la Bienal, a cargo de Chema Blanco, director desde hace tiempo del Festival Flamenco de Nîmes. Muchos cambios, aumento de sedes, nuevos criterios de espectáculo, de los que sobresale el ciclo Guitarra desnuda, es decir, conciertos de guitarra solista, que tendrán lugar en el Espacio Turina, en un horario que se solapa con otros eventos. Algo a lo que los medios no estábamos acostumbrados. A correr a la salida de un evento para llegar al siguiente sí. A tener que elegir entre dos, este año es la primera vez. Una lástima, que una serie de conciertos de guitarra coincidan en horario con otros espectáculos. El concierto inaugural el 13 de septiembre con Gerardo Núñez; Álvaro Martinete, Canito, Jesús Guerrero, José Antonio Rodríguez, Joselito Acedo, Salvador Gutiérrez, Alfredo Lagos, Paco Jarana, Yerai Cortés, José Manuel León, Bolita, Rycardo Moreno y Antonio Rey que clausurará el ciclo el 30 de septiembre. Estos conciertos son a las 21 horas y van precedidos de espectáculos que empiezan a las 20 horas en los teatros Maestranza o Lope de Vega y seguidos de otros que empiezan a las 22 en el Teatro Central. Excepciones: El concierto inaugural de Gerardo Núñez no tendrá nada detrás y el de clausura de Antonio Rey  irá seguido a las 23 horas en el Teatro Alameda de un concierto, estreno mundial, de Raúl Cantizano y Marco Serrato con Tomás de Perrate.

The hand of the new direction of the Biennale, in charge of Chema Blanco, long-time director of the Nîmes Flamenco Festival, is very noticeable. Many changes, an increase in venues, new show criteria, of which the Naked Guitar cycle stands out, that is, solo guitar concerts, which will take place in the Turina Space, on a schedule that overlaps with other events. Something the media we weren’t used to. To run to the exit of an event to get to the next one, yes. Having to choose between two, this year is the first time. A pity, that a series of guitar concerts coincide in time with other shows. The inaugural concert on September 13 with Gerardo Núñez; Álvaro Martinete, Canito, Jesús Guerrero, José Antonio Rodríguez, Joselito Acedo, Salvador Gutiérrez, Alfredo Lagos, Paco Jarana, Yerai Cortés, José Manuel León, Bolita, Rycardo Moreno and Antonio Rey who will close the cycle on September 30. These concerts are at 9:00 p.m. and are preceded by shows that start at 8:00 p.m. at the Maestranza or Lope de Vega theaters and are followed by others that start at 10:00 p.m. at the Teatro Central. Se anuncian varios estrenos mundiales, entre otros Insaciable de Lucía Álvarez la Piñona, pero ¡qué casualidad! acabamos de verlo el 6 de septiembre en los Teatros del Canal, donde sí ha sido estreno mundial. Una obra creada en residencia en los Teatros, bajo la dirección de Estévez y Paños. Una auténtica joya. Rafael Estévez me dice que la representación en Sevilla será idéntica a la de Madrid. O sea, estreno en Sevilla. No tengo referencias del resto de estrenos mundiales, nada menos que otros veintiuno.

Several world premieres are announced, among others Insatiable by Lucía Álvarez la Piñona, but what a coincidence! we just saw it on September 6 at the Teatros del Canal, where it did have a world premiere. A work created in residence at the Theaters, under the direction of Estévez y Paños. A real gem. Rafael Estévez tells me that the representation in Seville will be identical to that of Madrid. In other words, premiere in Seville. I have no references to the rest of the world premieres, no less than another twenty-one.

El llamado Hotel Triana está dedicado al ciclo Territorios con cuatro eventos. Y la Factoría Cultural  dos o tres proyectos de apadrinamiento. La iglesia de San Luis de los Franceses como siempre con cosas muy especiales: las jerezanas Juana la del Pipa, Dolores Agujetas  y Tomasa Guerrero La Macanita, en el ciclo Gratia Plena en tres domingos consecutivos. En el Real Alcázar, el siempre bienvenido Fahmi Alquai, director de la sevillana Accademia del Piacere, esta vez con Dani de Morón, viola da gamba barroca con guitarra flamenca; y Sergio de Lope con Elías.

The three pillars of the Biennial continue to be the Maestranza, Lope de Vega and Central theatres. This year, among the three are the names of Eva Yerbabuena, of course! Como actividades paralelas destacan las Jornadas Internacionales sobre el famosísimo Concurso de Cante Jondo, Granada 1922, dirigidas por el versátil Pedro G. Romero del 19 al 23 de septiembre en las sedes de UNIA (Universidad Internacional de Andalucía) y CICUS (Centro de Iniciativas Culturales de la Universidad de Sevilla). Intervendrán con ponencias destacados expertos nacionales e internacionales. Seguimos en el año del centenario del Concurso celebrado en Granada en 1922.

Parallel activities include the International Conference on the famous Cante Jondo Contest, Granada 1922, directed by the versatile Pedro G. Romero from September 19 to 23 at the headquarters of UNIA (International University of Andalusia) and CICUS (Center for Cultural Initiatives from the University of Seville). Leading national and international experts will intervene with presentations. We continue in the year of the centenary of the Contest held in Granada in 1922.

Una comunicación de última hora de la Bienal informa que del 11 al 22 de septiembre los programas del Teatro Lope de Vega se trasladarán al teatro Cartuja Center (CITE). Los artistas afectados serán David Lagos, María Terremoto y Pedro Ricardo Miño, Alfonso Losa, Israel Fernández, Antonio Reyes y Dani de Morón, y Mercedes de Córdoba. Del 23 al 30 de septiembre seguirá la programación en el Lope de Vega.
