THE THINKER: THE INCOMFORTABLE TRUTHS

La violencia siempre ha estado presente en las sociedades humanas desde tiempos inmemoriales, en su acepción de “acción o efecto de violentar o violentarse”.

Violence has always been present in human societies since time immemorial, in its meaning of «action or effect of violating or violating.»

Si bien el diccionario de nuestro idioma amplía esta acepción con la finalidad de aclararla todo lo posible, no asume –y esto es una opinión personal y por tanto debatible- la relación indiscutible con el instinto de agresividad intrínseco a la condición humana, que se alza sobre la evolución de las especies para mantenerse latente, ni desarrolla el vínculo que ese instinto tiene con el ámbito familiar y con la educación, únicos frenos capaces de controlarlo para dirigir la conducta hacia la benevolencia, el respeto, la tolerancia y la aceptación de los errores propios.

Although the dictionary of our language expands this meaning in order to clarify it as much as possible, it does not assume –and this is a personal opinion and therefore debatable- the indisputable relationship with the instinct of aggressiveness intrinsic to the human condition, which rises above the evolution of the species to remain latent, nor does it develop the link that this instinct has with the family environment and with education, the only brakes capable of controlling it for direct behavior towards benevolence, respect, tolerance and acceptance of one’s own mistakes.

Así las cosas, haríamos muy bien en repasar la historia remitiéndonos todo lo posible hacia el pasado: tal vez muchos se lleven la sorpresa de que, milenios atrás, en las comunidades organizadas predominaba la violencia, incluso en niveles mucho más desagradables y trágicos que en la actualidad, lo que, es obvio, tampoco tranquiliza a nadie.

This being the case, we would do very well to review history by referring ourselves as much as possible to the past: perhaps many will be surprised that, millennia ago, violence prevailed in organized communities, even at much more unpleasant and tragic levels than in today, which, obviously, does not reassure anyone.

Pero debería enseñarnos a que esta enfermedad que hoy sentimos alrededor con miedo viene del fondo de los tiempos, aunque las formas sean diferentes.

But it should teach us that this illness that we feel around us with fear today comes from the depths of time, even if the forms are different.

¿Acaso debemos sentenciar que el instinto de agresividad exacerbado jamás disminuirá?

Should we say that the exacerbated instinct of aggressiveness will never decrease?

No. La sentencia que surge de estudiar el asunto es otra: la política, como expresión práctica de las ideas formuladas a la búsqueda de soluciones, ha ido fracasando al paso de los siglos y, si es verdad que de todos modos ha habido modificaciones del comportamiento humano, también lo es –y ambas constituyen verdades incómodas pero ciertas- una insuficiencia para quitar de la vida real, o reducirla al mínimo posible, esa sombra oscura y brutal de la violencia.    

No. The sentence that emerges from studying the matter is another: politics, as a practical expression of the ideas formulated in search of solutions, has been failing over the centuries and, if it is true that there have been changes in human behavior anyway, it is also true – and both are uncomfortable but true truths – an insufficiency to remove from real life, or reduce it to the minimum possible , that dark and brutal shadow of violence.

Hagámonos una pregunta, sólo con el fin de dar más sencillez a esta reflexión: ¿cómo nace y se desarrolla un ser humano hoy, con el objetivo de ser, fuera de otras características personales que lo seguirán toda su vida, amigable y constructivo para integrarse a la sociedad a la que llegó?

Let us ask ourselves a question, just in order to make this reflection more simple: how is a human being born and develops today, with the aim of being, apart from other personal characteristics that will follow him throughout his life, friendly and constructive to integrate to the society to which he arrived?

Lo primero a considerar es el ambiente familiar que lo recibe. Es lo mismo que decir, en este tiempo, que muchos nacerán y crecerán desfavorecidos por la ignorancia, la pobreza y hasta la malevolencia que quizás predominen en ese ambiente. Y es también igual a decir que ese proceso, lejos de enderezarse, se torcerá más si el sistema educativo, pensado para y desde la más temprana niñez, no consigue aplicar métodos que actúen como compensación y corrección de lo que le llega torcido a sus manos.

The first thing to consider is the family environment that receives it. It is the same as saying, at this time, that many will be born and grow up disadvantaged by the ignorance, poverty and even malevolence that may prevail in that environment. And it is also the same as saying that this process, far from being straightened out, will become more crooked if the educational system, designed for and from the earliest childhood, fails to apply methods that act as compensation and correction of what comes crooked to its hands.

En términos simples, debe decirse que no hay futuro plausible para una sociedad si no se logra, aún en términos no totales, y primero que otra acción, a incidir positivamente sobre las familias desfavorecidas para que mejoren su propia educación, los mayores tengan posibilidades de trabajo digno y todos estén bajo un techo respetable y no en un asentamiento o en rancheríos copados por distintas formas de delincuencia.

In simple terms, it must be said that there is no plausible future for a society if it is not achieved, even in not total terms, and first of all, to have a positive impact on disadvantaged families so that they improve their own education, the elderly have the possibility of decent work and everyone is under a respectable roof and not in a settlement or in ranches dominated by different forms of crime.

Y como eso no bastará, aunque se intente y haya al menos logros parciales, debe dirigirse la mirada, una vez más, a lo que ofrece, en el mismo camino de reconstrucción social, la educación, desde la más tierna edad hasta aquella que determina que una personalidad ya se ha formado.

And since that will not be enough, even if it is attempted and there are at least partial achievements, one should look once again at what education offers, on the same path of social reconstruction, from the earliest age to that which determines that a personality has already been formed.

Si echamos esa mirada sobre nosotros mismos, sobre lo que constituimos como comunidad, sobre la realidad que enfrentamos, se hace difícil sentir optimismo. Por eso me he sentido impulsado a exponer estos posiblemente desordenados pensamientos.

If we take that look at ourselves, at what we constitute as a community, at the reality we face, it becomes difficult to feel optimistic. That is why I have felt compelled to expose these possibly disordered thoughts.

Advierto alrededor –y no ahora precisamente, sino desde hace bastante tiempo- palabras, palabras y más palabras. Diría que hasta discursos bonitos, al principio convincentes, y planes variopintos, sostenidos con enunciados irreprochables. Pero, al cabo, poco y en general nada sustantivo. No aparecen los hechos consiguientes que puedan cambiarnos como sociedad.

I notice around me -and not just now, but for quite some time- words, words and more words. I would say that even beautiful speeches, at first convincing, and varied plans, supported by irreproachable statements. But, after all, little and in general nothing substantive. The consequent facts that can change us as a society do not appear.

Me veo en la cruz de los caminos, a una edad ya avanzada. No es una sensación confortable.

I see myself at the crossroads, at an advanced age. It is not a comfortable feeling.

Con todo lo dicho, sólo me alentará, el tiempo que me quede, la día a día deshilachada esperanza de que se haga la luz en quienes tienen la irrenunciable responsabilidad de levantar las obras y las reformas que saben son imprescindibles pero que, por dar prioridad a la ambición de poder y al fanatismo, las siguen postergando.

With all that said, it will only encourage me, the time that I have left, the frayed day-to-day hope that the light will shine on those who have the inalienable responsibility of carrying out the works and the reforms that they know are essential but that, by prioritizing they continue to postpone ambition for power and fanaticism.

Me he cansado de escribir aquí acerca de lo que no son novedades: todo aquello que debería hacerse y hasta los procedimientos a seguir. Ya sé, son sólo sugerencias. Pero el mero hecho de, aun en el desacuerdo acerca de los detalles, el sólo reflexionar al respecto con espíritu tolerante, respetuoso y una rigurosa libertad de pensamiento crítico y análisis racional sería suficiente como para dar un primer paso.

I am tired of writing here about what is not new: everything that should be done and even the procedures to follow. I know, these are just suggestions. But the mere fact of, even in the disagreement about the details, just reflecting on it with a tolerant, respectful spirit and a rigorous freedom of critical thought and rational analysis would be enough to take a first step.
