THE THINKER: COLORS AND SYMBOLS

Este es un país lleno de paradojas que afortunadamente, hasta ahora, ha logrado sobrevivir a ellas y a las groseras contradicciones que inundan desde hace décadas al sistema político.

This is a country full of paradoxes that fortunately, until now, has managed to survive them and the gross contradictions that have flooded the political system for decades.

Ciertamente, cada día más a duras penas.

¿Milagro? Yo no lo creo, hasta que se me pruebe lo contrario, porque soy agnóstico. ¿Maravilla sostenida en el tiempo de una forma imperfecta pero al fin equilibrada de hacer política sobre el borde mismo del abismo? Ah, eso podría ser.

Observe, lector, que, aun en medio del deterioro de ese sistema político que supo de épocas constructivas, casi épicas, sigue alzado el principio esencial: los ciudadanos, con su voto, somos los que tomamos, en libertad de acción –no sé cuántos en libertad razonada de pensamiento-, aquellas decisiones más trascendentes para un sistema democrático representativo y republicano de gobierno.

I watched, reader, who, even in the midst of the deterioration of that political system that knew of constructive, almost epic times, continues to raise the essential principle: Citizens, with their vote, are the ones who make, in freedom of action – I don’t know how many in reasoned freedom of thought – those most important decisions for a representative and republican democratic system of government.

Next, the awkward questions and the answers that jump by themselves, like from inside a box of spring-loaded toys. No haré perder el tiempo a nadie, aunque sobra paño para reflexionar al respecto, recordando cómo se vota en las elecciones presidenciales y cuál es el equilibrio –que no lo hay, ahorrémonos tiempo- entre simpatías con determinadas ideas políticas, con respeto y tolerancia por las ajenas, y una actitud de patota, de un lado y otro, anteponiendo viejos dogmas increíblemente en pie y referidos a personajes, hechos y épocas del pasado. O sea de otros tiempos que poco tienen que ver con éste.

I won’t waste anyone’s time, although there is plenty of cloth to reflect on it, remembering how to vote in the presidential elections and what is the balance – which is not there, let’s save time- between sympathies with certain political ideas, with respect and tolerance for others, and an attitude of a gang, from one side to the other, putting old dogmas unbelievably upright and referring to characters, events and times of the past. In other words, from other times that have little to do with this one.

Sí me referiré al próximo plebiscito sobre la eventual derogación de ciento treinta y cinco artículos de la Ley de Urgente Consideración.

Yes, I will refer to the next plebiscite on the eventual repeal of one hundred and thirty-five articles of the Urgent Consideration Law.

Como prueba que resuena en nuestras mejillas al modo de un cachetazo, ha surgido un motivo de pelea tan absurdo que avergüenza a cualquier ser humano medianamente inteligente, informado y, claro está, respetuoso y tolerante: el color de las papeletas.

As evidence that resonates on our cheeks like a slap, a reason for a fight so absurd that it shames any human being moderately intelligent, informed and, of course, respectful and tolerant: the color of the ballots.

El pataleo infantil que despertó entre la oposición que la papeleta por el NO –que representa la posición del gobierno- lleve el color celeste, como si se hubiese hecho a propósito para confundir o inducir a una acción a los ciudadanos porque se cree que es algo así como “el color de la patria” o “el color que nos representa a todos”, parece sacado de una de las peores comedias de Disney. Confieso no saber cómo se eligieron u otorgaron los colores de ambas papeletas, porque el rosado que ha sido otorgado a la oposición, si uno aplicara el mismo análisis que el anterior, el gobierno podría argüir que se ha hecho con la deplorable intención de descalificarlo, ya que, y lo sabe el país entero, el peor insulto con que la oposición se ha regodeado contra blancos y colorados unidos ha sido, precisamente, ¡oh, casualidad!, el adjetivo de “rosaditos”.

The infantile kicking that aroused among the opposition that the ballot for the NO – which represents the government’s position – bears the color blue, as if it had been done on purpose to confuse or induce an action to citizens because it is believed that it is something like «the color of the country» or «the color that represents us all», it seems to be taken from one of the worst Disney comedies. I confess I do not know how the colors of both ballots were chosen or awarded, because the pink that has been granted to the opposition, if one applied the same analysis as the previous one, the government could argue that it has been done with the deplorable intention of disqualifying it, since, and the whole country knows it, the worst insult with which the opposition has gloated against united whites and colorados has been precisely, oh, coincidence, the adjective «rosaditos».

¿Acaso alguien pretende crear una simbología de tercero diferencial de escuela primaria y tomarla como argumento para levantar otra polémica y, de paso, sentirse perseguido? Suena demasiado estúpido, tonto, demasiado sacado a fórceps del vientre de la imbecilidad.

Does someone try to create a symbology of a differential third of primary school and take it as an argument to raise another controversy and, incidentally, feel persecuted? It sounds too stupid, silly, too forceps out of the belly of imbecility.

¿Por qué las preocupaciones acerca de este plebiscito, tan significativo para el futuro de la vida del país, parecen andar en autitos chocadores que evitan detenerse para tomar en cuenta lo que no sabemos bien, a fondo, y que, por eso mismo, la ignorancia, nos llevará a un nuevo acto eleccionario en paños menores o desnudos?

Why do concerns about this plebiscite, so significant for the future of life in the country, seem to run in bumper cars that avoid stopping to take into account what we do not know well, in depth, and that, for that very reason, the Ignorance, will lead us to a new election act in the underwear or in the nude?

De todos quienes votarán por derogar esos ciento treinta y cinco artículos, tanto como de todos quienes votarán por mantenerlos, o lo harán en blanco o anulando intencionalmente su sufragio, ¿cuántos conocen, al menos en términos generales, qué diablos dicen esos textos, a qué apuntan y cuáles serían sus efectos probables si mantienen su vigencia o si se les anula?

Of all those who will vote to repeal those one hundred and thirty-five articles, as well as of all those who will vote to maintain them, or will do so blank or intentionally annulling their vote, How many know, at least in general terms, what the hell these texts say, what they point to, and what their likely effects would be if they remain in force or if they are annulled?

Muy, muy pocos.

Es que los opositores encargados de difundir una información seria, responsable, directa, se han dedicado a mentir desembozadamente o, los otros, en la vereda de enfrente, a anadear con argumentos de fácil digestión, cual diseños al paso que caen bien según las circunstancias de cada día.

It is that the opponents in charge of disseminating serious, responsible, direct information, have dedicated themselves to lying openly or, the others, in the opposite sidewalk, to add arguments of easy digestion, which designs to the step that go well according to the circumstances of everyday.

La triste conclusión, a mi juicio, es que participaremos de otro acto de los esenciales en un sistema democrático sin saber, a cabalidad, no ya a quien o a quienes apoyamos políticamente, sino las características fundamentales –el detalle, lo que deberíamos saber y sobre lo que deberíamos juzgar con seriedad- de aquello que decidiremos con la introducción de nuestra papeleta en la urna. 

The sad conclusion, in my opinion, is that we will participate in another act of the essentials in a democratic system without fully knowing not who or whom we support politically, but the fundamental characteristics -the detail, what we should know and about what we should seriously judge- of what we will decide with the introduction of our ballot in the ballot box.

No parece sensato. No parece serio, sea cual sea el resultado.

It doesn’t seem sensible. It doesn’t seem serious, whatever the outcome.

Bueno, pero es lo que hemos también elegido tener a la mano, así como muchos han preferido recostarse a la sombra de la militancia más rampante.

Well, but it is what we have also chosen to have on hand, just as many have preferred to recline in the shadow of the most rampant militancy.
