THE THINKER: ART FOR EVERYONE

Me siento condenado a escribir –en estado de reiteración real- sobre la educación.

I feel condemned to write – in a state of real reiteration – about education.

No es un capricho, sino la necesidad de un punto de partida que se hace común para reflexionar acerca de diversas cuestiones que afectan a la sociedad.

It is not a whim, but rather the need for a common starting point to reflect on various issues that affect society.

Alvin Toffler publicó, a inicios de la década de 1980, un trabajo monumental titulado “Los consumidores de cultura”. Es extremadamente abarcador, y también, en mi modesta opinión, demasiado centrado en la realidad de lo que ocurría entonces en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, es posible extraer ciertas frases y a partir de ellas trasladar algunos conceptos a nuestra realidad.

Alvin Toffler posted, in the early 1980s, a monumental work entitled «Consumers of culture.» It is extremely comprehensive, and also, in my modest opinion, too focused on the reality of what was happening then in the United States. However, it is possible to extract certain phrases and from them transfer some concepts to our reality.

En el epílogo, sentencia: “Contra la idea de que el arte debe ser aislado de la masa de la humanidad, existe la noción contraria y nada irrazonable de que el arte debe ser una parte orgánica de la sociedad, incorporada a la vida de la mayor cantidad posible de personas”.

In the epilogue, judgment: «Against the idea that art must be isolated from the mass of humanity, there is the contrary and not unreasonable notion that art should be an organic part of society, incorporated into the lives of as many people as possible ”.

Y luego se apoya en palabras del personaje Leverkuhn de “Doctor Fausto”, de Thomas Mann, donde sostiene que el arte “estaría completamente solo, solo hasta la muerte, de no hallar un camino hacia el pueblo o, para decirlo menos románticamente, hacia los seres humanos”. Predominaba en Mann, en esa época, la idea de que, cuando esto ocurriese, el arte se vería como el servidor de una comunidad ligada por mucho más que la educación; una comunidad que no tendría una cultura sino que, por el contrario, sería una cultura.

And then he relies on the words of the character Leverkuhn from «Doctor Faust», by Thomas Mann, where he maintains that art “would be completely alone, only until death, of not finding a way to the people or, to put it less romantically, to human beings ”. It predominated in Mann, at that time, the idea that, when this happened, art would be seen as the servant of a community linked by much more than education; a community that would not have a culture but, on the contrary, would be a culture.

Y Toffler añade: “La afirmación de los partidarios de las élites de que ninguna democracia ha producido una cultura de alta calidad carece de sentido. La suposición de que lo que no ha sido en el pasado no puede serlo en el futuro es un falso silogismo”.

And Toffler adds: “The claim by elite supporters that no democracy has produced a high-quality culture is nonsense. The assumption that what has not been in the past cannot be in the future is a false syllogism ”.

Me he tomado el trabajo de, tal vez, aburrir al lector con tantas citas, sólo para fundamentar mejor una opinión: el arte –todo el arte, desde el considerado clásico, de alto nivel, hasta el llamado erróneamente popular- puede ayudar mucho en mejorar a la sociedad, contribuyendo bastante más de lo que la mayoría supone a su renacimiento en la sensibilidad, el libre pensamiento crítico, el respeto y la tolerancia, que, a su sola mención, suena a una constructiva sacudida ciudadana en la mejor dirección.

I’ve taken the job of, perhaps boring the reader with so many quotes, just to better substantiate an opinion: art – all art, from the considered classic, high level, even the mistakenly popular call – can help a lot to improve society, contributing far more than most suppose to his rebirth in sensibility, free critical thinking, respect and tolerance, which, at the mere mention of it, sounds like a constructive citizen shake-up in the best direction.

Siendo múltiples las artes –música, pintura, escultura, cine y teatro, literatura y un montón de expresiones más-, cuando inicio esta reflexión valorando a la educación, pareciera que contradigo a Mann, nada menos, cuando sugiere que la imposición del arte en la comunidad va más allá de ella; sería así si yo sacase de contexto esa frase que transcribí sólo parcialmente.

The arts being multiple – music, painting, sculpture, cinema and theater, literature and a lot of other expressions-, when I start this reflection valuing education, it seems that I contradict Mann, nothing less, when it suggests that the imposition of art in the community goes beyond it; It would be like this if I took out of context that phrase that I only partially transcribed.

Admito que puede sonar ingenuo parlotear sobre la extensión del arte en la comunidad como elemento de reconstrucción, cuando convivimos con una alta marginalidad, que en sí misma es una discriminación, con altos porcentajes de pobreza y una economía acribillada de problemas e imperfecciones, con el telón de fondo, además, de una pandemia planetaria que no cesa. Sin embargo, no lo creo así: en todo caso, me estoy adelantando a sugerir ideas que, aun siendo de plena aplicación lejana, conviene trabajar desde ya sobre ellas, del mismo modo que se hace con la reforma de la propia educación, o la de la seguridad social o la de otros esfuerzos destinados a ir mejorando la situación presente.

I admit that it may sound naive to chatter about the extension of art in the community as an element of reconstruction, when we coexist with a high marginality, which in itself is discrimination, with high percentages of poverty and an economy riddled with problems and imperfections, against the background, also, of a planetary pandemic that does not stop. However, I do not think so: in any case, I am getting ahead of suggesting ideas that, even though they are fully applicable, should be worked on from now on, in the same way as is done with the reform of education itself, or the social security or other efforts aimed at gradually improving the present situation.

Y llegó el momento de resumir: creo que el primer paso, o los primeros pasos, se deben dar en la escuela; está claro que tanto en ámbitos de la niñez como de la adolescencia –y aquí estaríamos hablando del ciclo de Secundaria- existe la enseñanza de algunas artes; algunas, no todas; y, lo que es peor, según programas a mi entender insuficientes y sin coordinación progresiva.

And it was time to summarize: I believe that the first step, or the first steps, must be taken at school; It is clear that both in the areas of childhood and adolescence – and here we would be talking about the Secondary cycle – there is the teaching of some arts; some not all; and, what is worse, according to programs in my opinion insufficient and without progressive coordination.

Lo que venga mejorado y adaptado a las circunstancias vigentes, deberá preservar el acceso de todos a los nuevos métodos pedagógicos en la materia. De nada valdría consensuar tamaño esfuerzo, que implica una política de Estado, si hay educandos beneficiados y otros a los que se les hace inaccesible recibir esta nueva educación. No debe haber escuela ni liceo, estén adónde estén, ni mucho menos escolares o liceales discriminados, apartados, imposibilitados porque, antes, no se les han resuelto los inconvenientes que aún prevalecen.

What is improved and adapted to the current circumstances, must preserve the access of all to the new pedagogical methods in the matter. It would be useless to agree on such an effort, which implies a State policy, if there are benefited students and others who are made inaccessible to receive this new education. There should be no school or high school, wherever they are, much less discriminated, isolated, disabled schools or high schools because, before, the problems that still prevail have not been resolved.

Y, para cerrar, hay algo que debo dejar transparente: ninguna educación logrará que a un alumno, de la edad que sea, lleguen a gustarle TODAS las artes; se trata, por el contrario, de que disponga de una información adecuada y una práctica básica de cada una de ellas; la preferencia personal nacerá, y se desarrollará, según el interés que cada una despierte en la subjetividad emocional, no sólo intelectual, de cada receptor de los conocimientos.

And, to close, there is something that I must make transparent: no education will make a student, of whatever age, come to like ALL the arts; it is, on the contrary, that you have adequate information and a basic practice of each of them; personal preference will be born, and will develop, according to the interest that each one arouses in the emotional, not just intellectual, subjectivity of each recipient of knowledge.

Una advertencia: como en casi todo, en este enfoque hay que generalizar. Incluso haciendo bien los deberes aquellos que deberían ser responsables de hacerlos en la educación, nada garantiza que todos los que aprendan a amar alguna forma de arte obtendrán automáticamente el certificado de buenas personas, tolerantes, respetuosas y libre pensadoras. Siempre habrá quienes, incluso aquellos que alcancen cierta resonancia desarrollando un arte, culminada la pintura, la escultura, la obra musical, cinematográfica o teatral o un libro, continuarán siendo, en su mismidad, lo que eran antes. Sólo que estoy persuadido de que serán muchísimos menos que ahora.  

An advert: as in almost everything, in this approach it is necessary to generalize. Even if those who should be responsible for doing them in education do their homework well, nothing guarantees that all those who learn to love some form of art will automatically obtain the certificate of good people, tolerant, respectful and free thinkers. There will always be those, even those who reach a certain resonance by developing an art, after painting, sculpture, musical, cinematographic or theatrical work or a book, will continue to be, in their very self, what they were before. Only I am persuaded that they will be far fewer than now.
