Los cambios en el calendario original respondían a la necesidad de minimizar los viajes y sumar días de descanso para los equipos en los cuartos de final de La Copa América 2021, sin embargo los días de descanso en la fase de grupos se redujeron a tres. El formato en sí no sufrió cambios y la intensidad de partidos por día era la misma en la fase de grupos.

Recordemos que los grupos A y B corresponden a la zona norte (Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador Perú y Venezuela) y la zona sur (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay). Las dos selecciones invitadas de otras confederaciones Australia y Qatar cancelaron su participación y las posiciones fueron elegidas mediante un sorteo.
