Dedico estas líneas al General Eduardo Enrique Zapateiro Altamiranda, quien hoy enfrenta el rigor de la controversia, muchas veces alimentada por sectores que, bajo la influencia de un «Macondo» malentendido, parecen haber olvidado la gratitud y la doctrina que un día los formó. Resulta preocupante observar cómo el misticismo de nuestra literatura ha sido instrumentalizado para justificar posturas que hoy desafían la estabilidad institucional y el honor militar.

I dedicate these lines to General Eduardo Enrique Zapateiro Altamiranda, who today faces the full force of controversy, often fueled by sectors that, under the influence of a misunderstood «Macondo,» seem to have forgotten the gratitude and doctrine that once shaped them. It is troubling to observe how the mysticism of our literature has been instrumentalized to justify positions that today challenge institutional stability and military honor.

Gabriel García Márquez nos dibujó con la maestría de su metáfora; nos hizo sentir el vuelo de las mariposas amarillas como el símbolo de un anhelo. Sin embargo, hoy esas mismas mariposas parecen haberse transformado en una inquietud que recorre el estómago de los colombianos. En manos de los actuales intérpretes ideológicos, la narrativa de Gabo ha pasado de ser una joya literaria a convertirse en un marco de referencia que algunos utilizan para transformar la realidad política del país, llevándonos hacia un escenario de incertidumbre.

Gabriel García Márquez portrayed us with the mastery of his metaphor; he made us feel the flight of yellow butterflies as the symbol of a yearning. However, today those same butterflies seem to have transformed into a disquiet that stirs in the hearts of Colombians. In the hands of today’s ideological interpreters, Gabo’s narrative has gone from being a literary gem to becoming a frame of reference that some use to transform the country’s political reality, leading us toward a scenario of uncertainty.

Considero que el Nobel, en su inmensa capacidad creativa, dejó entrever un imaginario sobre el futuro de Hispanoamérica. Su habilidad fue tal que nos hizo habitar un mundo donde lo insólito se volvió cotidiano. Pero esa audacia de su pluma también contribuyó a una construcción intelectual que hoy permite a ciertos sectores políticos validar utopías que, en la práctica, resultan complejas y polarizantes.

I believe that the Nobel laureate, in his immense creative capacity, offered a glimpse into the future of Latin America. His skill was such that he made us inhabit a world where the extraordinary became commonplace. But that audacity of his pen also contributed to an intellectual construct that today allows certain political sectors to validate utopias that, in practice, prove complex and polarizing.

El actual gobierno parece haber heredado esas «fantasías macondianas», convirtiendo el ejercicio del poder en una suerte de realidad abstracta, a veces desconectada de las necesidades tangibles del pueblo. Se percibe una intención de cuestionar las estructuras tradicionales y las jerarquías sociales de Colombia —aquellas que Gabo retrató con ironía—, pero llevándolas a un extremo de confrontación que dificulta el entendimiento nacional.

The current government seems to have inherited these «Macondo-esque fantasies,» transforming the exercise of power into a kind of abstract reality, sometimes disconnected from the tangible needs of the people. There is a perceived intention to question the traditional structures and social hierarchies of Colombia—those that Gabo portrayed with irony—but taking them to an extreme of confrontation that hinders national understanding.

García Márquez tuvo la sutileza de preparar un terreno psicológico donde las nuevas generaciones, fascinadas por la magia de sus letras, se abrieron a corrientes ideológicas que hoy buscan redefinir la democracia latinoamericana. Detrás de la cortina del realismo mágico, hubo una visión geopolítica clara: su cercanía con figuras como Fidel Castro sugiere que el Nobel no fue solo un espectador, sino un estratega intelectual de la izquierda en el continente.

García Márquez had the subtlety to prepare a psychological ground where new generations, fascinated by the magic of his writing, opened themselves to ideological currents that today seek to redefine Latin American democracy. Behind the curtain of magical realism, there was a clear geopolitical vision: his closeness to figures like Fidel Castro suggests that the Nobel laureate was not just a spectator, but an intellectual strategist for the left on the continent.

Apreciado General Zapateiro: ¿qué se puede esperar de este Macondo político que hoy intenta permear incluso el alma de nuestras Fuerzas Armadas? En este escenario donde a veces la infamia parece ganar terreno sobre la virtud, le insto a no bajar la guardia. La justicia posee sus propios tiempos, pero es ineludible. Junto a figuras como Abelardo, el panorama puede transitar de la incertidumbre de un Macondo convulso hacia la construcción de un país sólido y fundamentado en valores superiores.

Dear General Zapateiro, what can be expected from this political Macondo that today seeks to permeate even the very soul of our Armed Forces? In this scenario where infamy sometimes seems to gain ground over virtue, I urge you not to lower your guard. Justice has its own pace, but it is inescapable. Alongside figures like Abelardo, the landscape can shift from the uncertainty of a turbulent Macondo toward the construction of a solid country founded on higher values.
