Esta frase, pronunciada por un longevo hombre deslumbrante, parece simple pero no lo es. Dibuja la compleja, contradictoria personalidad de un artista impar, universalmente reconocido y abre el interés de intentar exponerlo mejor, ahora que está, a sus ochenta y nueve años, encarando un nuevo proyecto que -es obvio- no tiene certeza alguna de terminar pero encarará con el mismo vigor con que se expresa a diario.

This phrase, uttered by a dazzling, long-lived man, seems simple, but it is not. It paints a picture of the complex, contradictory personality of a unique, universally acclaimed artist and sparks the interest in trying to better understand him, now that, at eighty-nine, he is embarking on a new project that—it is obvious—he has no certainty of finishing, but which he will undertake with the same vigor with which he expresses himself daily.

Philips Anthony Hopkins nació en Gales, el 31 de diciembre de 1937, hijo de Muriel Anne y Richard Arthur Hopkins; su madre es pariente lejana del poeta irlandés William Butler Yeats y su hijofue criado en la fe anglicana de su patria.

Philip Anthony Hopkins was born in Wales on December 31, 1937, the son of Muriel Anne and Richard Arthur Hopkins; his mother is a distant relative of the Irish poet William Butler Yeats, and he was raised in the Anglican faith of his homeland.

Hopkins tuvo una vida sufrida, hasta que maduró intelectual y emocionalmente y fue definiendo su carácter: fue un niño solitario y disléxico; nadie sabrá cuánto influyó en su vida al momento de querer dedicarse a algún arte, tendiendo al comienzo de la adolescencia a la pintura, el dibujo o el piano. Sus padres, viéndolo desordenado y confundido, lo internaron primero en una escuela prestigiosa y rígida y más tarde en el Cowbridge Grammar School.

Hopkins had a difficult life until he matured intellectually and emotionally and his character began to take shape. He was a solitary, dyslexic child; no one will ever know how much this influenced his desire to dedicate himself to the arts, leading him in early adolescence to painting, drawing, or the piano. His parents, seeing him disorganized and confused, first sent him to a prestigious and strict boarding school and later to Cowbridge Grammar School.

Allí se produjo el inicio del milagro que tomó años. Su amigo Richard Burton, algo mayor, lo convenció de cortar lazos familiares y dedicarse a la actuación. Sorpresivamente, Hopkins, que tenía quince años, aceptó: primero se graduó en una academia de música y drama en Cardiff; más tarde se trasladó a Londres, donde se radicó, y terminó su formación en la Academia Real de Arte Dramático.

There, the beginning of the miracle that would take years unfolded began. His slightly older friend, Richard Burton, convinced him to sever family ties and dedicate himself to acting. Surprisingly, Hopkins, who was fifteen, agreed: he first graduated from a music and drama academy in Cardiff; later he moved to London, where he settled, and completed his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Hoy, Anthony Hopkins, en mi modesta opinión el más espléndido actor de teatro y cine de la historia, no olvida que, además, por breve tiempo, fue compositor musical, productor y director de series, programas televisivos, obras de teatro y películas. Sus primeros papeles protagónicos fueron en Coriolano (1971) y Macbeth (también en teatro, 1972). Su glorioso debut en Broadway, en 1975, fue teatral y mereció críticas magníficas por Equus, aunque se había presentado como actor cinematográfico en 1968, interpretando a Ricardo Corazón, de Harvey.

Today, Anthony Hopkins, in my humble opinion the most splendid stage and screen actor in history, doesn’t forget that he was also, for a brief time, a musical composer, producer, and director of series, television programs, plays, and films. His first leading roles were in Coriolanus (1971) and Macbeth (also on stage, 1972). His glorious Broadway debut in 1975 was on stage and garnered magnificent reviews for Equus, although he had appeared as a film actor in 1968, playing Richard the Heart in Harvey’s film.

La vida de Hopkins pasó a ser un torbellino de actividad actoral y es prácticamente imposible dar cuenta aquí de todas sus actuaciones. Lo mismo habría que decir de los reconocimientos recibidos en todo el mundo, incluyendo dos Oscar: el primero por El silencio de los inocentes, junto a Jodie Foster, y el segundo, ¡treinta años después, siendo el actor de más edad en la historia del cine!, por El padre, con Debra Winger como coprotagonista. En la década de 1990 sacó el documento norteamericano y se mudó a Nueva York. Un hombre complejo, ya se dijo: se casó tres veces; la primera esposa  fue Petronella Barker, con quien tuvo su única hija, Abigail, actriz y cantante, con la que no tiene relación; la segunda mujer fue Jennifer Lynton y la tercera, desde 2003, la colombiana Stella Arroyave con la que continúa una amorosa relación y lo acompaña en los difíciles momentos que debe atravesar después que le fuera diagnosticado autismo tea grado 1, antes conocido como síndrome de Asperger; su comentario, al saberlo, sorprendió diciendo que “sentía alivio al entender por qué, durante toda su vida, ha sido un hombre con tendencia a la soledad”; y no hay que olvidar que fue, desde la juventud, un confeso alcohólico “que no bebe desde1975”.

Hopkins’ life became a whirlwind of acting activity, and it’s virtually impossible to list all his performances here. The same could be said of the accolades he received worldwide, including two Oscars: the first for *The Silence of the Lambs*, alongside Jodie Foster, and the second, thirty years later, making him the oldest actor in film history to win an Oscar!, for *The Father*, with Debra Winger as his co-star. In the 1990s, he obtained his American citizenship and moved to New York. A complex man, as already mentioned: he married three times; his first wife was Petronella Barker, with whom he had his only daughter, Abigail, an actress and singer, with whom he has no contact; his second wife was Jennifer Lynton, and his third, since 2003, has been the Colombian Stella Arroyave, with whom he maintains a loving relationship and who supports him through the difficult times he has faced since being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD Level 1), formerly known as Asperger’s syndrome. His comment, upon learning this, surprised everyone by saying that he «felt relief in understanding why, throughout his life, he has been a man with a tendency towards solitude»; and it should not be forgotten that he was, from his youth, a self-confessed alcoholic «who has not drunk since 1975».

-Alejarse también representa una forma de amor propio y madurez. En ocasiones, es necesario aceptar que algunos familiares solo comparten el apellido, no los valores.

-Distancing yourself also represents a form of self-love and maturity. Sometimes, it’s necessary to accept that some family members only share a last name, not values.

Reconocido por su memoria, muy flexible, lo que le facilita recordar líneas de guiones, aunque -otra vez las contradicciones de carácter- se prepara intensamente para cada papel y repasa las líneas todas las veces que necesite “para después hacerlo sin pensar”, lo que le confiere a cada actuación un tono natural, casual, cayendo a veces en la improvisación. Por ello ha tenido algunos conflictos con los directores. Entre ellos Spielberg (Amistad) quien durante todo el rodaje jamás lo llamó Tony, como otros, sino sir Anthony.

Known for his remarkable and flexible memory, which makes it easy for him to recall lines of dialogue, although—yet another example of his character’s contradictions—he prepares intensely for each role and rehearses his lines as many times as necessary «so he can deliver them without thinking,» which lends each performance a natural, casual tone, sometimes bordering on improvisation. This has led to some conflicts with directors. Among them was Spielberg (Amistad), who, throughout the entire shoot, never called him Tony, as others did, but rather Sir Anthony.

Cierro este texto en homenaje a un grande, recordando tres filmes, a los que fue nominado al Oscar y no lo ganó, que constituyeron un enorme acto de injusticia: Tierra de sombras (Attenborough), Lo que queda del día (Ivory) y Amistad (Spielberg).

I close this piece as a tribute to a great man, recalling three films for which he was nominated for an Oscar but didn’t win, which constituted a tremendous injustice: Shadowlands (Attenborough), The Remains of the Day (Ivory), and Amistad (Spielberg).

Espero que este genio del arte siga peleando a su modo y emocionando a la gente, cuando estas líneas lleguen a alguien que desee leerlas.

I hope this artistic genius continues to fight in his own way and move people when these words reach someone who wishes to read them.

En su juventud, Hopkins compuso el vals And the waltz goes on (Y el vals sigue) pero no lo dio a conocer porque ya estaba dedicado a pleno al teatro y el cine. Fue al conocer al violinista y director de orquesta neerlandés André Rieu que se animó a darlo a conocer. Rieu quedó fascinado con la pieza, la incluyó en su próximo disco y lo tocó especialmente al cierre de una gala, con un conmovido Anthony Hopkins.

In his youth, Hopkins composed the waltz «And the Waltz Goes On,» but he didn’t release it because he was already fully dedicated to theater and film. It was after meeting the Dutch violinist and conductor André Rieu that he decided to share it. Rieu was captivated by the piece, included it on his next album, and performed it at the close of a gala, with a deeply moved Anthony Hopkins.
