The history of bridges illustrates the progress of engineering and human ingenuity, ranging from simple logs to modern steel and concrete structures.

Origen y primeros puentes / Origins and early bridges

The earliest bridges appeared naturally, formed from hand-woven plant fibers; later, fallen logs spanning streams or stones arranged to cross the water were used. These developments date back to around 3000 BC, a time when structures were already being built to cross rivers, mountains, and other natural obstacles.

Subsequently, stone bridges were adopted for river crossings, utilized by prehistoric societies to facilitate passage over natural obstacles. Over time, humans began constructing bridges using logs, planks, and stones, employing simple supports and crossbeams. Some American tribes even used reeds and ropes to create walkways and rudimentary suspension bridges.

Some of the earliest bridges made of stone, brick, and wood were built in Mesopotamia and Egypt to facilitate trade and communication. The Romans perfected arch technology, creating durable structures—such as the Alcántara Bridge in Spain and Trajan’s Bridge—that combined advanced engineering with materials like granite and concrete.

These structures could bear heavy loads and withstand strong currents, and many of them remain standing today.

Orígenes y la Antigua Roma / Origins and Ancient Rome

Early settlers used plant fibers, logs, stone, and earth to span short distances. The true revolution arrived with ancient Rome, whose engineers used mortar made from volcanic rock and perfected bridge design.

Two thousand years ago, the Romans erected bridges without reinforced concrete, iron, or modern machinery. They first built wooden centering—a temporary framework—and then placed the voussoirs one by one until the arch was closed. In this way, they converted weight into compression, facilitating the construction of solid, enduring structures and even the rapid assembly of military bridges.

In locations where conditions were particularly challenging, the Romans built stone piers that extended down to the riverbed, creating a solid, resilient foundation.

In Peru, there is a stone bridge built in the 16th century that, in addition to being the subject of various legends, measures over 30 meters in length and approximately 5 meters in width. Today, it serves as a tourist attraction.

The secret of stone bridges lies in how they function under compression, owing to their characteristic arch shape. Greater compression increases the structure’s strength without the need for iron or concrete. The stones are wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, and this arrangement helps support the weight.

The oldest existing bridge is the Kazarma Bridge, also known as the Arkadiko Bridge. It dates back to the 13th century BC and is located in the Peloponnese, Greece.

This bridge has been in use for over 3,000 years and stands as a remarkable example of Mycenaean architectural engineering.

The Chinese also succeeded in building bridges that endured for centuries. Some were constructed from wooden components using the interlocking beam method, which involved assembling the timber much like weaving fabric.

From early designs made of rope and wood to sophisticated structures of steel and reinforced concrete, bridges have demonstrated the evolution of engineering and architecture. They facilitate connections between cultures and allow obstacles to be overcome; each one tells a unique story.

Numerous bridges were also built during the Middle Ages. The ingenuity involved was extraordinary. Without modern machinery, the secret lay in the use of arches capable of distributing loads. When firm ground was found on riverbeds, wooden piles were driven in. Blacksmiths, carpenters, and stonemasons all played a role in these construction projects.
