BETWEEN THE LINES – MOTIVATION IN ACTION: «Photographers are storytellers who speak through light.»

La fotografía es, en su esencia más pura, el arte de traducir la existencia sin necesidad de palabras.

Photography is, in its purest essence, the art of translating existence without the need for words.

El lenguaje invisible de la iluminación

• Sombras y matices: La luz no solo ilumina lo que vemos; define lo que sentimos. La penumbra aporta misterio y drama, mientras que una luz cálida y directa transmite nostalgia o esperanza. Shadows and nuances: Light does not merely illuminate what we see; it defines what we feel. Dim light adds mystery and drama, while warm, direct light conveys nostalgia or hope.
• El instante decisivo: Capturar un haz de luz en la fracción de segundo precisa convierte un momento efímero en un testimonio eterno. Es la diferencia entre una simple imagen testimonial y una narrativa visual profunda. The decisive moment: Capturing a beam of light at the precise fraction of a second transforms an ephemeral moment into an eternal testament. It is the difference between a mere documentary image and a profound visual narrative.
• La mirada del observador: El fotógrafo no inventa la realidad, sino que la revela. A través de la dirección, la intensidad y el contraste de la luz, guía al espectador para que descubra aquello que a menudo pasa desapercibido a simple vista. The observer’s gaze: The photographer does not invent reality but reveals it. Through the direction, intensity, and contrast of light, they guide the viewer to discover what often goes unnoticed by the naked eye.

Al final, fotografiar es escribir con fotones. Cada disparo es una declaración de intenciones donde el fotógrafo, como narrador silencioso, nos invita a detenernos, observar y conectar con la belleza, la fragilidad o la fuerza del mundo que nos rodea. Alguien dijo una vez que ‘los fotógrafos son narradores que hablan a través de la luz’… y hoy, en nuestro estudio, tenemos a un auténtico poeta de la luz y el color.

Ultimately, photography is writing with photons. Each shot is a statement of intent in which the photographer—acting as a silent storyteller—invites us to pause, observe, and connect with the beauty, fragility, or power of the world around us. Someone once said that «photographers are storytellers who speak through light»… and today, in our studio, we are joined by a true poet of light and color.

Y.A.  Jesús, naciste y creas bajo el cielo de Andalucía, una tierra donde la luz tiene una magia casi pictórica. Cuando escuchas que eres un ‘narrador que habla a través de la luz’ ¿Cuál es la primera historia de tu Málaga natal que recuerdas haber capturado simplemente observando cómo caía el sol?» Jesús, you were born and create under the Andalusian sky—a land where the light possesses an almost painterly magic. When you hear yourself described as a «storyteller who speaks through light,» what is the first story from your native Málaga that you recall capturing simply by observing the way the sun set?

El poder ver como el sol se escondía entre las aguas de mi Málaga, me dio la naturaleza de poder y observando cada rincón que se esconde en esta mi Tierra, viendo que son tantos los lugares, rincones, espacios, belleza, cultura que me inspiró a poder observar y retratar cada espacio de ella.  

Witnessing the sun dip into the waters of my Málaga gave me a sense of empowerment; observing every hidden corner of this land of mine—with its myriad places, nooks, spaces, beauty, and culture—inspired me to observe and capture every part of it.

Y.A Explorar su transición hacia la fotografía digital y de autor. ¿Cómo se aprende a ‘hablar’ ese idioma de luces y sombras? ¿En qué momento la cámara dejó de ser un aparato técnico para convertirse en su voz? Explore their transition to digital and auteur photography. How does one learn to ‘speak’ that language of light and shadow? At what point did the camera cease to be a technical device and become their voice?

Es un idioma especial que toda persona lleva en su interior, y yo tuve la suerte poder obtener la magia que una cámara se convirtiese en parte de mí. No verla como un instrumento, sino, una forma de poder transmitir mis sentimientos, mi interior y el exterior que me rodea. Porque mi interior recoge toda esa belleza y me deja sacar lo mejor que está en mí

It is a special language that everyone carries within, and I was fortunate enough to capture the magic of a camera becoming a part of me—not viewing it merely as a tool, but as a way to convey my feelings, my inner self, and the world around me. Because my inner self absorbs all that beauty and allows me to bring out the best within me.

Y.A. Tu fotografía no es un simple reflejo de la realidad. Cuando uno mira tus obras, ve explosiones de color, texturas que parecen lienzos vanguardistas… Es como si usaras la edición y la técnica digital para añadirle adjetivos y emociones a tus relatos visuales.  ¿Cómo decides qué colores van a contar la historia de una fotografía?» Your photography is not a simple reflection of reality. When looking at your work, one sees explosions of color and textures that resemble avant-garde canvases… It is as if you use editing and digital techniques to add adjectives and emotions to your visual stories. How do you decide which colors will tell the story of a photograph?

Yo no decido que color necesitaré para esa fotografía, la fotografía en sí elige, decide ese color y yo solo lo plasmo en esa foto tan especial para mí.  Ya que cada una de ellas, de esas fotografías, son especiales, ninguna es menos que otra, aunque siempre hay alguna que se queda también en esa retina que no puedes olvidar.   

I do not decide which color I will need for a given photograph; the photograph itself chooses—it decides on that color—and I simply capture it in an image that holds such special meaning for me. After all, every single one of these photographs is special—none is less significant than another—though there are always some that remain etched in your mind, impossible to forget.

Y.A Dicen que el fotógrafo ve lo que el resto del mundo ignora por ir de prisa. Como gestor y docente, pasas la vida enseñando a otros a mirar. En este mundo tan acelerado, ¿cómo se educa el ojo para encontrar la belleza en lo cotidiano y lograr que una imagen nos transforme por dentro?» They say a photographer sees what the rest of the world overlooks in its haste. As an administrator and educator, you spend your life teaching others how to look. In such a fast-paced world, how does one train the eye to find beauty in the everyday and allow an image to transform us from within?

Gracias por el comentario, al decir que una imagen ayude a transformar por dentro. Afortunadamente los años dan la experiencia, y la experiencia es también cultura, belleza, aprendizaje que no solo transmite, sino que me educa también a mí.

Todo aquello que conecte a la persona con el arte, en este caso la fotografía, es siempre una terapia no sólo visual, sino también una forma de desconectar y aprender en esos minutos de observación de lo que nos rodea y ver lo privilegiados que somos.

Anything that connects a person to art—in this case, photography—serves as a form of therapy that goes beyond the visual; it is also a way to disconnect and learn during those moments spent observing our surroundings, realizing just how privileged we are.

Y.A. Seguimos conversando con Jesús Baena en este viaje a través de la luz. Pero un narrador completo no se queda en un solo formato. Tú también tocas la guitarra, cantas, gestionas cultura y has colaborado estrechamente ilustrando proyectos editoriales y novelas con autores internacionales. Cuando musicalizas una historia o le pones imagen a las letras de un libro… ¿la luz sigue siendo tu guía?» We continue our conversation with Jesús Baena on this journey through light. But a true storyteller doesn’t limit himself to just one format. You also play the guitar, sing, manage cultural projects, and have collaborated closely with international authors by illustrating their books and novels. When you set a story to music or create imagery for a book’s text… does light remain your guiding force?

Si por supuesto, siempre una historia convertida a una imagen fotográfica crea una historia y tiene una historia. Da letra a los sentimientos encontrados en su interior y en este caso en mi interior.

Yes, of course. A story transformed into a photographic image both creates a story and holds a story within it. It gives voice to the feelings found inside—in this case, inside me.

Y.A A veces, la cultura une orillas de forma mágica. ¿Cómo ha sido para ti esa experiencia de conectar creativamente con autores del otro lado del charco y fusionar tu mirada europea con la sensibilidad de otras latitudes. Sometimes, culture bridges distant shores in a magical way. What has it been like for you to connect creatively with authors from across the Atlantic and blend your European perspective with the sensibilities of other regions?

Te agradezco esta pregunta, pues el conectar con otras personas tan importantes fuera de nuestra tierra, en otros países, es un honor también, es algo que no se podría describir con palabras. Es un aprendizaje de ellos, lo que hace enriquecerme también a mí. Agradezco a todos ellos, el dejarme ser parte de ellos y dejarme transmitir mi experiencia y también transmitir que la belleza, la cultura, el arte, no tiene límites ni fronteras, sobre todo cuando algo se hace con mucho amor.

I appreciate that question. Connecting with such significant people abroad—in other countries—is a true honor; it is something that defies description. Learning from them enriches me as well. I am grateful to them all for letting me be a part of their world and for allowing me to share my experience, while also conveying that beauty, culture, and art know no limits or borders—especially when something is created with great love.

Y.A Te voy a decir términos fotográficos, y tú me vas a decir qué significan hoy en tu vida personal. ¿Te atreves?» I’m going to give you some photographic terms, and you’re going to tell me what they mean in your personal life today. Are you up for it?

Vamos a intentar poder responder de forma precisa.

Let’s try to answer precisely.

• El Enfoque: (A qué le prestas atención hoy) […] El día a día te pone enfrente lo que hay que prestar atención, no tienes que buscar pues entonces no encuentras o no es natural, es el momento y el lugar lo que hace especial en cada instante, en cada segundo lo que te atrae y tu atención se enfoca. The Focus: (What you pay attention to today) […] Daily life places right in front of you what requires your attention; you don’t have to go looking for it—for then you might not find it, or it wouldn’t feel natural. It is the time and place that make each moment and second special—drawing you in and focusing your attention.
• El Contraluz: (Cómo manejas los momentos difíciles) […]   Los momentos difíciles siempre hay que enfocarlos de la mejor manera, aunque siempre es un paso muy decisor, también la experiencia, los años, hace que te ayuden a manejar las emociones, las situaciones de una manera diferente según pasa los años, el tiempo. Backlighting: (How you handle difficult moments) […] You always have to approach difficult moments in the best possible way; while such moments represent a crucial turning point, experience and the passing of years help you manage emotions and situations differently as time goes by.
• La Sombra: (Lo que guardas para ti mismo) […]   Siempre hay algo que se queda en tu interior y no es no querer compartir, sino que, a veces hay situaciones que necesitas para ti mismo, es tu interior, es tu manera de también parar y observar esas sombras, esos secretos por decirlo de alguna manera, es una forma de terapia también interna, necesario para toda persona. Todos tenemos momentos internos que preferimos tener para nosotros mismos. The Shadow: (What you keep to yourself) […] There is always something that remains within you; it isn’t a matter of not wanting to share, but rather that there are situations you need to keep for yourself. It’s your inner world—a way to pause and observe those shadows, those «secrets,» so to speak. It is a form of internal therapy that everyone needs. We all have private moments we prefer to keep to ourselves.
• El Flash: (Un instante de felicidad pura) […]   Uff buena pregunta. Un instante de felicidad pura puede ser cualquier instante, cualquier momento que te de una sonrisa sencilla y natural, desde un simple café en un momento de relax, un compartir con amigos, o simplemente este momento que comparto con ustedes es también un instante de felicidad. Es todo momento que te hace sentir en la nube, y que no tiene que ser monetario ni material. The Shadow: (What you keep to yourself) […] There is always something that remains within you; it isn’t a matter of not wanting to share, but rather that there are situations you need to keep for yourself. It’s your inner world—a way to pause and observe those shadows, those «secrets,» so to speak. It is a form of internal therapy that everyone needs. We all have private moments we prefer to keep to ourselves.

Y.A. A través de tus ojos nos has recordado que todos somos creadores de nuestra propia realidad ¿Qué mensaje le dejas a nuestra audiencia que tal vez hoy está buscando un poco de luz en sus propias historias?» Y.A. Through your eyes, you’ve reminded us that we are all creators of our own reality. What message would you leave for our audience—people who might be looking for a little light in their own stories today?

Que siempre por muy duro que lo vean, aunque no vean la luz, siempre al final con amor, con Fe, se va viendo poco a poco la luz. Que siempre se agarren a quienes lo quieren, que no se aíslen, que busquen y digan no puedo más, pues siempre hay y habrá alguien que te ayudará a que esa luz vaya apareciendo, y a levantarle si cae. Que busque en su interior, siempre habrá alguien y algo que los hará iluminados. 

No matter how hard things may seem—even if the light is nowhere to be found—with love and faith, that light will gradually emerge. They should always hold fast to those who care for them, avoid isolation, and be willing to say, «I can’t go on,» because there is—and always will be—someone to help that light appear and to lift them up if they fall. Let them look within; there will always be someone and something to bring them illumination.
