THE THINKER: THE FORGOTTEN DEMAND

Ya no hay vueltas: con una ansiedad que supongo exaspera a los ciudadanos pensantes, inteligentes, la masa de políticos profesionales y de excitados aspirantes se está moviendo cada día con más celeridad, actuando en función de la campaña preelectoral.

There is no turning back: with an anxiety that I suppose exasperates thinking, intelligent citizens, the mass of professional politicians and excited aspirants are moving faster every day, acting according to the pre-election campaign.

Así estamos asistiendo a un aluvión de renuncias de funcionarios públicos con cargos más o menos relevantes, dejando en sus sillones a personas cuya idoneidad muchas veces es una interrogante.

Thus we are witnessing a flood of resignations of public officials with more or less relevant positions, leaving people whose suitability is often a question mark in their chairs.

Mientras tanto, el gobierno y la oposición siguen con enormes responsabilidades y cuestiones a resolver porque así lo necesita la sociedad.

Meanwhile, the government and the opposition continue to have enormous responsibilities and issues to resolve because society needs it that way.

Algo está claro: no estoy transmitiendo ninguna novedad pues sobran los antecedentes en la historia nacional, aunque -quizás y sin quizás- esta vez se esté, en general, apretando con más ganas el acelerador.

One thing is clear: I am not transmitting any news because there is plenty of background in national history, although – perhaps and without perhaps – this time we are, in general, pressing the accelerator more eagerly.

La situación abre dos áreas para la reflexión del ciudadano: una, ¿será suficiente el tiempo y con el personal más adecuado para dar solución a las cuestiones pendientes?; otra, entre el vocerío de quienes ya han sido designados candidatos, no aparece nada, pero nada de nada, novedoso con miras al futuro, salvo promesas casi todas reconocibles por antigüedad.

The situation opens up two areas for citizen reflection: one, will there be enough time and the most appropriate personnel to solve the pending issues?; another, among the clamor of those who have already been designated candidates, nothing appears, but nothing at all, new with a view to the future, except for promises, almost all of which are recognizable by seniority.

Pensando en este aspecto, debo decir, con el pesar de cualquier contribuyente que espera otra cosa, que así se convoca por un lado al fanatismo de los que votan a cualquiera con tal que coincida con su dogma partidario -¡olvídese, lector, de la reflexión y del pensamiento libre¡-, y por otro a la decepción de los que sí buscan razonar y comprender como un buen agnóstico de ideas independientes.

Thinking about this aspect, I must say, with the regret of any taxpayer who expects otherwise, that this calls on the one hand to the fanaticism of those who vote for anyone as long as it coincides with their party dogma – forget, reader, about the reflection and free thought! -, and on the other hand to the disappointment of those who do seek to reason and understand like a good agnostic of independent ideas.

¿Por qué decepción?

Por la imagen que proyectan aquellos ya en carrera, nominados en sus partidos y por la ignorancia acerca de quienes los acompañarán en búsqueda del poder y que, hoy por hoy, son desconocidos.

Because of the image projected by those already in the race, nominated by their parties, and because of the ignorance about those who will accompany them in their search for power and who, today, are unknown.

Lo esencial de esa decepción es, entre quienes tienen contacto con el público, constatar que vuelven a caer, como recientes antecesores, en el olvido de una exigencia esencial: expresar, hablando o por escrito, con corrección y claridad para que no quede nadie -salvo que no quiera prestar atención- sin alcanzar la comprensión y evitar la confusión.

The essence of this disappointment is, among those who have contact with the public, to note that they once again fall, like recent predecessors, into forgetting an essential requirement: to express, speaking or in writing, with correctness and clarity so that no one is left – unless you don’t want to pay attention – without achieving understanding and avoiding confusion.

Confieso que soy pesimista. Décadas de una educación decadente se han esparcido como una epidemia: mal o desprolijo uso del idioma, desorden en la comunicación de las ideas supuestamente fundamentales, errores gramaticales y de razonamiento y hasta groseras expresiones en debates.

I confess that I am a pessimist. Decades of a decadent education have spread like an epidemic: poor or sloppy use of language, disorder in the communication of supposedly fundamental ideas, grammatical and reasoning errors, and even rude expressions in debates.

No hay que menospreciar este asunto. Contribuye precisamente a que muchas personas no entiendan o entiendan mal lo que se les dice. Cuidado, porque de ese mal pueden surgir los votos que permitan el triunfo electoral de un partido y, peor aún, abrir el acceso, sobre todo al significativo Poder Legislativo, a ciertos candidatos que, antes, deberían haber hecho, cuanto menos, un curso breve, intensivo, de lectura, comprensión de lo leído, y expresión verbal que respete el idioma, aunque construyan sus frases sólo con sujeto, verbo y predicado.

This matter should not be underestimated. It contributes precisely to the fact that many people do not understand or misunderstand what they are told. Be careful, because from this evil the votes can arise that allow the electoral victory of a party and, worse still, open access, especially to the significant Legislative Branch, to certain candidates who, before, should have taken, at the very least, a course brief, intensive, reading, understanding of what is read, and verbal expression that respects the language, even if they construct their sentences only with subject, verb and predicate.

No quiero sonar irrespetuoso. Cualquiera que lea estas líneas sabe que no me aparto de la realidad que vivimos.

I don’t want to sound disrespectful. Anyone who reads these lines knows that I do not deviate from the reality we live in.

No voy a hablar de soluciones sostenibles porque ya no hay tiempo. Esas soluciones empiezan en la primera escolaridad o con esfuerzos en la adolescencia o la madurez; en cualquier caso hablamos de años.

I am not going to talk about sustainable solutions because there is no time. These solutions begin in early schooling or with efforts in adolescence or adulthood; In any case we are talking about years.

Las elecciones son sobre fines de éste.
