DOS VIDAS: ALICIA FLORES

Writer, Mexican, National Prize at the XII Ramón López Velarde Floral Games (2019), with eight published novels, among which is A portraitist in the court of Enrique VIII, which was among the ten most read in Mexico in 2009, and which has brought him many satisfactions, including the second edition in Spain of this novel that came out last November. Our guest remains current and creative with short stories, poems, her participation in anthologies, as well as promoting reading and giving literary workshops.

Escritora, mexicana, Premio Nacional en los XII Juegos Florales Ramón López Velarde (2019), con ocho novelas publicadas, entre las que se encuentra Una retratista en la corte de Enrique VIII, que estuvo entre las diez más leídas en México en 2009, y que le ha traído muchas satisfacciones, entre las que se cuentan, la segunda edición en España de esta novela que salió en noviembre pasado. Nuestra invitada permanece vigente y creativa con obras de cuento, poemarios, su participación en antologías, además de promover la lectura e impartir talleres literarios.

A portraitist in the court of Henry VIII, she was a finalist in the Casa de las Américas Literary Award (Cuba, 2009), where the president of the jury was the great José Saramago.

Although Alicia Flores was born in the province of Las Choapas, Veracruz, she currently lives in the state of Puebla, from where she enthusiastically and radiantly attended this interview.

Si bien Alicia Flores nació en la provincia de Las Choapas, Veracruz, radica actualmente en el estado de Puebla, desde donde atendió entusiasta y radiante a esta entrevista.

At what point did you discover your ability to write literaryally?

¿En qué momento descubrió su capacidad de escribir literariamente?

The bright eyes of our interviewee brought to mind the age of 58, when she was about to retire from her profession as a specialist in gynecology.

Los ojos brillantes de nuestra entrevistada trajeron a su memoria la edad de 58 años, cuando estaba punto de jubilarse de su profesión como médico especialista en ginecología.

“I was a reader from a very young age. One day, in the operating room, when everything was quiet because they were preparing the patient for surgery, a poem materialized, I think it was vibrating perhaps at a higher level.

“Fui lectora desde muy chica. Un día, en el quirófano, cuando todo estaba tranquilo porque preparaban a la paciente para operarla, se materializó un poema, creo que estaba vibrando tal vez en un nivel superior. Entraba dos veces por semana a quirófano y la enfermera circulante entre las cosas que entregaba al anestesiólogo, me daba una hoja blanca y un lápiz, entonces me ponía a escribir en una oficina pequeña anexa a quirófano. Mi amigo el anestesiólogo dice que todos se preguntaban, ¿qué estará haciendo la doctora?, y pensaban, estará escribiendo cartas, pero nadie me preguntó. Así fueron naciendo los primeros poemas de Naufragio. A los pocos meses, me jubilé”. I went into the operating room twice a week and the circulating nurse, among the things that she delivered to the anesthesiologist, gave me a white sheet and a pencil, then I began to write in a small office attached to the operating room. My friend the anesthesiologist says that everyone was wondering, what is the doctor doing?, and they thought, she is writing letters, but no one asked me. This is how the first poems of Shipwreck were born. A few months later, I retired.»

“My first texts were poetic, lyrical. From the age of five I learned to read everything that fell into my hands, I even looked for my aunts, grandmothers, the neighbors, to go read aloud. Not only did I keep the stories, I wanted to tell them, all of that was reloaded in layers and layers until the moment came when it exploded, it had to be given”.

“Mis primeros textos fueron poéticos, de la lírica. Desde los cinco años aprendí a leer todo lo que caía en mis manos, hasta buscaba a mis tías, abuelitas, a las vecinas, para ir a leer en voz alta. No solo me quedaba con las historias, quería contarlas, todo eso se fue recargando en capas y capas hasta que llegó el momento en que explotó, había que darlo”.  

Who have been your favorite authors?

¿Quiénes han sido sus autores favoritos?

“I started reading poetry, my favorite author at an early age is Rubén Darío, I read his complete works when I was 11 years old, he was my initiator. Currently, among my favorite poets are Jaime Sabines and Mario Benedetti, for fiction now I prefer to read novels and historical novels, my favorite American author is Noah Gordon, who wrote El Médico, I also have an English author named Taylor Caldwell, who wrote the novel Doctor of bodies and souls, which is the novel biography of Saint Luke, the evangelist. I read another fiction author who is an American writer with Jewish roots called Erica Jong, a feminist, I have all her works.

“Yo empecé leyendo poesía, mi autor favorito a edad temprana es Rubén Darío, leí sus obras completas cuando tenía 11 años, él fue mi iniciador. En la actualidad entre mis poetas favoritos está Jaime Sabines y Mario Benedetti, de ficción ahora prefiero leer novela y novela histórica, mi autor favorito estadounidense es Noah Gordon, que escribió El Médico, también tengo una autora inglesa que se llama Taylor Caldwell, que escribió la novela Médico de cuerpos y almas, que es la biografía novelada de San Lucas, el evangelista. Leo a otra autora de ficción que es una literata norteamericana de raíces judías que se llama Erica Jong, feminista, tengo todas sus obras”.

What was the first work you submitted to the contest?

¿Cuál fue la primera obra que envió a concurso?

«It’s the collection of poems Shipwreck, I sent it to two contests, and it didn’t win, but, my first historical novel A portraitist in the court of Henry VIII, I asked my only teacher at that time, what he did with a finished novel, he told me to send her to a contest. By then there was internet, it was 2009, I searched and found the Planeta Novel Award (Argentina). He still lived in Las Choapas, they asked for the novel physically, five copies because they were the members of the jury. My novel had 300 pages, in the town I printed 1,500 sheets, they had to be bound and sent by mail. At the post office the person who attended turned out to be my patient, he informed me that the shipment to Argentina would be very expensive, so he compressed them with cinnamon tape. What would be my surprise, after three months, I had even forgotten, they spoke to me from Buenos Aires, telling me: Do you know that you were a finalist for the Planeta Novel Award (Argentina), and there is a luxurious dinner with the ten finalists, there the jury’s decision will be reported, she is invited with her partner. I am in Mexico, I replied. We just saw your novel. Finally, the Argentinean Federico Andahazi won with a novel about an Aztec navigator who traveled to Europe, the work is called El conquistador”.

“Es el poemario Naufragio, lo mandé a dos concursos, y no ganó, pero, mi primera novela histórica Una retratista en la corte de Enrique VIII, le pregunté a mi único maestro por aquel entonces, qué hacía con una novela terminada, me dijo que la enviara a un concurso. Para entonces había internet, era 2009, busqué y encontré Premio Planeta de Novela (Argentina). Vivía todavía en Las Choapas, pedían en físico la novela, cinco ejemplares porque eran los integrantes del jurado. Mi novela tenía 300 páginas, en el pueblo imprimí 1500 hojas, había que engargolarlas y mandarlas por correo. En las instalaciones del correo la persona que atendía resultó ser mi paciente, me informó que saldría carísimo el envío hasta Argentina, así que las comprimió con cinta canela. Cuál sería mi sorpresa, como a los tres meses, ya hasta me había olvidado, me hablaron desde Buenos Aires, diciéndome: Sabe usted que quedó finalista del Premio Planeta de Novela (Argentina), y hay una cena de lujo con los diez finalistas, ahí se informará el fallo del jurado, está invitada con su pareja. Estoy en México, respondí. Acabamos de ver su novela. Finalmente, ganó el argentino Federico Andahazi con una novela que trata de un navegante azteca que viajó a Europa, la obra se llama El conquistador”.

“I thought, I’m going to send her to another contest. I sent it to the Casa de las Américas Literary Prize (Cuba, 2009), at that time it was like the Nobel Prize in Spanish. I received an email from the Planeta publishing house, where they told me that you were a finalist for the Casa de las Américas Literary Award, we want to publish your novel. I’m telling you, because many writers have told me they don’t believe in contests, and I attest that at least in those contests they were totally impartial. It is a story that I am going to tell in my autobiography.”

“Pensé, la voy a mandar a otro concurso. La envié al Premio Literario Casa de las Américas (Cuba, 2009), en ese tiempo era como el Premio Nobel en español. Recibí un correo de la editorial Planeta, donde me decían quedó usted como finalista del Premio Literario Casa de las Américas, queremos editar su novela. Lo cuento, porque muchos escritores me han dicho que no creen en los concursos, y doy fe que al menos en esos concursos fueron totalmente imparciales. Es una historia que voy a contar en mí autobiografía”.

“In the Casa de las Américas Literary Award contest, the president of the jury was José Saramago. I have the second edition of A Portrait Woman in the Court of Henry VIII, they made it for me in Spain with a beautiful cover, the original that Planeta editorial made for me, it’s also beautiful, it’s a painting by Rafael and this novel sold out in the first anus. It was among the ten best-selling novels in Mexico at Cafebrería El Péndulo, my novel in sixth place along with a work by Octavio Paz, which was in fifth place, and the Romanian-German writer Herta Mûller, Nobel Prize for Literature 2009.

“En el concurso Premio Literario Casa de las Américas, el presidente del jurado fue José Saramago. Tengo la segunda edición de Una retratista en la corte de Enrique VIII, me la hicieron en España con una portada preciosa, la original que me hizo editorial Planeta, también es bonita, es un cuadro de Rafael y esta novela se vendió toda en el primer año. Estuvo entre las diez novelas más vendidas en México en Cafebrería El Péndulo, mi novela en sexto lugar junto a una obra de Octavio Paz, que era el quinto lugar, y la escritora rumano-alemana Herta Mûller, Premio Nobel de Literatura 2009.

Do you think that literary writing is directly related to inspiration or does it happen naturally?

¿Considera que escribir literariamente tiene relación directa con la inspiración o acaso ocurre de forma natural?

“Inspiration is something subjective, I adhere to the writers who say that the muse has no time to arrive, but she is very jealous, if she arrives and you are busy with something else, she leaves and never returns. For me it is ideal to write at night, they no longer call you on the phone, everyone is sleeping, there is silence and that helps. I don’t rest if I don’t write every day, it can be newspaper articles, stories”.

“La inspiración es algo subjetivo, me adhiero a los escritores que dicen que la musa no tiene hora para llegar, pero es muy celosa, si llega y estás ocupado en otra cosa, se va, y ya no regresa. Para mí es ideal escribir en la noche, ya no te llaman por teléfono, todos duermen, hay silencio y eso ayuda. No descanso si no escribo todos los días, pueden ser artículos periodísticos, cuentos”.

«Literature is a very rigorous discipline, when I write a novel I impose myself at least ten pages a day.»

“La literatura es una diciplina muy rigurosa, cuando escribo una novela me impongo al menos diez páginas diarias”.

“I am so lucky that I have had to live two lives: the first as a professional, and the second as a writer, when in general at 60 years of age life is considered over and we dedicate ourselves to pampering the grandchildren. Society has begun to see the elderly as people who still have a lot to give, when before they were ordered to sit in the corner to wait for death, people took it that way, now there are many activities for the elderly. I have given many workshops at La Casa del Abue, it is a program of the DIF of Puebla, where they do exercises, dance, they also take literature classes, I have given poetry, short stories, and where before only children, young people, currently adults were contemplated They have produced good poems and we are going to make an anthology”.

“Soy tan afortunada que me ha tocado vivir dos vidas: la primera como profesionista, y la segunda como escritora, cuando por lo general a los 60 años se da por terminada la vida y nos dedicamos a apapachar a los nietos. La sociedad ha empezado a ver a la tercera edad como personas que todavía tienen mucho que dar, cuando antes mandaban a sentarse al rincón para esperar la muerte, la gente así lo tomaba, ahora hay muchas actividades para las personas de la tercera edad. He impartido muchos talleres en La Casa del Abue, es un programa del DIF de Puebla, donde hacen ejercicios, bailan, también toman clases de literatura, he dado poesía, cuento, y donde antes solo se contemplaba a niños, jóvenes, actualmente los adultos han logrado buenos poemas y vamos a hacer una antología”.  

So far, what has been the biggest literary challenge?

¿Hasta el momento cuál ha sido el mayor reto literario?

“A futuristic novel that I wrote. Science fiction is in fashion among average or ordinary readers, what is sold the most is novels, of all that is published, two thirds are novels, self-help books and science fiction, I think that I will never write self-help and I didn’t think science fiction either, and then I set out to write a futuristic novel, from a dystopian world, it’s called Remember to forget me, it was published by BUAP, before the pandemic.

“Una novela futurista que escribí. La ciencia ficción está de moda entre lectores medianos o de a pie, lo que más se comercializa es novela, de todo lo que se edita las dos terceras partes son novela, libros de autoayuda y ciencia ficción, pienso que nunca voy a escribir autoayuda y creí que tampoco ciencia ficción, y luego me propuse escribir una novela futurista, de un mundo distópico, se llama Acuérdate de olvidarme, la editó la BUAP, antes de la pandemia”.

What does literature contribute to humanity?

¿Qué aporta la literatura a la humanidad?

“That is a question as Louis Armstrong said when asked what jazz brings to music? He answered: My friend, if you ask me you will never know, my friend, if you ask that, you will never understand. . There are many people who say that what literature contributes is life, the one who reads lives a thousand lives, poor one who does not read, because he only lives his life, it is transporting himself to other planets, to other centuries, to as many historical moments as the Russian and French revolution, epic times, wise characters with whom one converses despite the fact that they have been dead for centuries, a trip to the center of the earth, all that is given to us by literature, is life, I feel that way, they are extra lives, lives that we live through books”.

“Esa es una pregunta como dijo Louis Armstrong cuando le preguntaron ¿qué aporta el jazz a la música?, él contestó: My friend, if you ask me you will never know, mi amigo, si tú preguntas eso, nunca lo vas a entender. Hay muchas personas que dicen que lo que aporta la literatura es vida, el que lee vive mil vidas, pobre del que no lee, porque nada más vive su vida, es transportarse a otros planetas, a otros siglos, a tantos momentos históricos como la revolución rusa, francesa, tiempos épicos, personajes sabios con los que uno dialoga a pesar de que tienen siglos de haber muerto, un viaje al centro de la tierra, todo eso que nos es dado por la literatura, es vida, así lo siento, son vidas extras, vidas que nosotros vivimos a través de los libros”.

What do you see yourself doing in the next few years?

¿Qué se ve haciendo en los próximos años?

“I see myself in a little house in the country, in Atlixco, with a minimalist library, because I have accumulated so many books that it really is time for them to pass into other hands. I see myself in a studio writing everything that occurs to me, I have a novel that talks about the contraceptive pill, it is the history of the pill, fictionalized. I will be surrounded by flowers and plants, with someone who loves me and whom I love.»

“Me veo en una casita en el campo, en Atlixco, con una biblioteca minimalista, porque he acumulado tantos libros que realmente ya es hora de que pasen a otras manos. Me veo en un estudio escribiendo todo lo que se me ocurra, tengo una novela que habla de la píldora anticonceptiva, es la historia de la píldora, novelada. Estaré rodeada de flores y plantas, con alguien que me ame y a quien amo”.

As a sole author, Alicia Flores has eight novels that are: A week of grace; A Portrait Painter at the Court of Henry VIII; Canita Cuahuzayoly; The Sierra de Negra lighthouse (it is a historical novel); Remember to forget me, Passengers without a track. «My favorite sentimental book is Blackouts, a psychological thriller.»

Como autora única, Alicia Flores tiene ocho novelas que son: Una semana de gracia; Una retratista en la corte de Enrique VIII; Cañita Cuahuzayoly; El faro de sierra de negra (es una novela histórica); Acuérdate de olvidarme, Pasajeros sin huella. “Mi libro mi favorito sentimental es Lagunas mentales, un thriller psicológico”.

Three collections of poems are part of his works: Shipwreck; The thousand and one emotions, edited by a PACMIC program from Acayucan, Veracruz; Floral attributes, an object book illustrated with flowers, which was sold out and has not been published again due to its cost, was the result of a workshop in Las Choapas, when she was starting out as a writer.

Tres poemarios forman parte de sus obras: Naufragio; Las mil y una emociones, editado por un programa PACMIC de Acayucan, Veracruz; Atributos florales, un libro objeto ilustrado con flores, que se agotó y debido a lo caro no ha vuelto a editarse, fue resultado de un taller en Las Choapas, cuando iniciaba como escritora.

Among his short story books are: Los Cuentos claros and Relato espeso, published by the Universidad Veracruzana on the Centennial of the Revolution; Smooth from south to north, by the Veracruz State Government Publisher; Reaching for the Sun, which won the Ramón López Velarde National Award (2019) in Jerez de García Salinas, Zacatecas.

Entre sus libros de cuentos tiene: Los Cuentos claros y el Relato espeso, que editó la Universidad Veracruzana en el Centenario de la Revolución; Suave de sur a norte, a cargo de la Editora de Gobierno del Estado de Veracruz; Alcanzar el sol, que ganó el Premio Nacional Ramón López Velarde (2019) en Jerez de García Salinas, Zacatecas.

As an active writer, she has published newspaper articles and essays.

“I have been very lucky, I have 30 books, including anthologies, collectives, and where I am the only author, which are 15. Expect the unexpected, is another anthology of short stories published by UNAM. From a group we made La Constancia, a textile factory in Puebla, now remodeled, it is a book that I like very much”.

“He sido muy afortunada, tengo 30 libros, entre antologías, colectivos y donde soy única autora que son 15. Esperar lo inesperado, es otraantología de cuentos que editó la UNAM. De un colectivo hicimos La Constancia, una fábrica textilque está en Puebla, ahora remodelada, es un libro que me gusta mucho”.

The writer Alicia Flores has appeared in countless scenarios, a dream and a challenge was the Guadalajara International Book Fair, where she moved in 2018, not only with one book, but with three, as co-author in the works Bocado de Ángeles ; The Joy of Home; and as the only author with the second part of A portrait painter in the court of Enrique VIII, which is A rescuer in the court of Felipe II, published by BUAP, a book that has printed paintings selected by the author.

La escritora Alicia Flores se ha presentado en innumerables escenarios, un sueño y un reto fue la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara, a donde se trasladó en 2018, no solo con un libro, sino con tres, como coautora en las obras Bocado de Ángeles; La Alegría del Hogar; y como única autora con la segunda parte de Una retratista en la corte de Enrique VIII, que es Un rescatista en la corte de Felipe II, que editó la BUAP, un libro que tiene impresas pinturas seleccionadas por la autora.

Another place that our guest considers memorable, in addition to the Palace of Fine Arts, is the Palafoxiana library (Puebla) where she has presented some of her books.

He shares with us that sometimes the most endearing memories have been in much less impressive settings.

Nos comparte que a veces los recuerdos más entrañables han sido en escenarios mucho menos impactantes.

“The second favorite scenario for me is the La Constancia chapel, we made the book Voces vivas de La Constancia, and the government of Puebla allowed the first performance to be held in this chapel, where they rang the bell as if calling for mass, it was the only living place that remained of that textile factory, which was extinguished and the government renewed it later. On that occasion the entire chapel was filled, it was a beautiful setting, the most significant thing was that decades ago I had married my husband in that same place”.

“El segundo escenario favorito para mí es la capilla La Constancia, hicimos el libro Voces vivas de La Constancia, y el gobierno de Puebla permitió que se celebrara la primera presentación en esta capilla, donde tocaron la campana como si se llamara a misa, era el único lugar vivo que quedaba de esa fábrica textil, que se extinguió y el gobierno la renovó después. En aquella ocasión toda la capilla se llenó, fue un escenario precioso, lo más significativo fue que décadas atrás me había casado con mi esposo en ese mismo lugar”.

“Another peculiar experience happened to me in Puebla in the marginal neighborhood called Pueblo Nuevo, now renamed Romero Vargas, one of the red flags of the popular neighborhoods, where a civil society invited me to participate in founding a community museum and a library. The community museum is next to the Pueblo Nuevo chapel, and I was presenting a book when a man stood up and said: I came to the chapel to get a baptism certificate that I need and I have to return to my town, but how did I do it? I have an hour left to get on the bus, I went in here where there were people and they were giving coffee, I hear you and I want your book, how much does it cost? Hurry up because my truck leaves in half an hour and I won’t catch up with you, I won’t I’m going to leave without his book, I told him it’s 200 pesos, he grabbed the book he was showing, left the money, and left, never in my life have I felt so satisfied, more flattered and gratified than on that occasion.»

“Otra experiencia peculiar me ocurrió en Puebla en la colonia marginal llamada Pueblo Nuevo, ahora rebautizada como Romero Vargas, uno de los focos rojos de las colonias populares, a donde una sociedad civil me invitó a participar a fundar un museo comunitario y una biblioteca. El museo comunitario queda a un lado de la capilla de Pueblo Nuevo, y presentaba un libro cuando un señor se levantó y dijo: vine a la capilla a sacar una fe de bautizo que necesito y tengo que regresar a mi pueblo, pero como me hacía falta una hora para subirme al camión, entré aquí donde había gente y estaban dando café, la oigo a usted y yo quiero su libro, ¿cuánto cuesta?, apúrese porque mi camión sale en media hora y no lo voy a alcanzar, yo no me voy a ir sin su libro, le dije son 200 pesos, agarró el libro que estaba mostrando, dejó el dinero, y se fue, nunca en la vida me he sentido tan satisfecha, más halagada y gratificada, que en esa ocasión”.

“Life has to be lived minute by minute. There is a phrase by Albert Camus with which I identify: «In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me, there lived an invincible summer.» «This is how I feel, within my winter, that splendid summer sun will never go away, even if it is inside my heart I have it.»

“La vida hay que vivirla minuto a minuto. Hay una frase de Albert Camus con la que me identifico: “En las profundidades del invierno, finalmente aprendí, que en mi interior, habitaba un verano invencible”. “Así me siento, dentro de mi invierno, nunca se va a quitar ese sol esplendoroso del verano, aunque sea dentro de mi corazón lo tengo”.

“Build bridges to perpetuate literature, spread it and connect more people. I always say that human beings, especially writers, are communicating vessels that we extend so that those who come after us continue the work.

“Hacer puentes para perpetuar la literatura, difundirla y conectar a más gente. Siempre digo que los seres humanos, especialmente los escritores, somos vasos comunicantes que vamos extendiéndonos para que los que vienen atrás de nosotros sigan la obra”.
