How can we be happy if we live in a world where justice, solidarity, peace, human rights are still a utopia in many parts of our planet?

Quizás en esa tristeza inevitable que nace al leer el periódico cada día está el acicate hacia la creación de la felicidad, pero no la propia, sino la del ser humano que sufre. 

Perhaps in that inevitable sadness that is born when reading the newspaper every day is the incentive to create happiness, but not one’s own, but that of the suffering human being.

Si no hay tristeza, no puede haber compasión ni rebelión, y si no hay compasión ni rebelión, no puede haber verdadero impulso hacia la transformación. 

If there is no sadness, there can be no compassion or rebellion, and if there is no compassion or rebellion, there can be no real drive toward transformation.

La compasión, la entrega al otro, el servir a una causa mayor que uno mismo, es fuente de felicidad, aunque solo sea desde el egoísmo inteligente que hace que, al entregarnos, consigamos olvidarnos de nuestros propios problemas.

Compassion, dedication to others, serving a cause greater than oneself, is a source of happiness, even if only from the intelligent egoism that makes us forget about our own problems when we surrender.

Por difícil que sea su situación, las personas que construyen su felicidad en el servicio al otro, no ven la existencia como un coto cerrado, sino como un universo de posibilidades en el que todo está por hacer. 

No matter how difficult their situation may be, people who build their happiness in the service of others do not see existence as a closed field, but rather as a universe of possibilities in which everything remains to be done.

En ese reto por cumplir, en la utopía que lograr, ahí está también la felicidad.

Ningún ser humano es una isla, y es en el encuentro con el otro en el que se revela en profundidad las capas de lo que supone ser humano.

Es en esa entrega donde nos olvidamos de nuestras cuitas y entramos en algo mucho más grande y poderoso: la acción conjunta que nos hace crecer en la medida que resolvemos carencias y problemas, por pequeños que sean, y al hacerlo, sentimos que nuestro esfuerzo merece, literalmente, la pena.
