THE THINKER: EPIDEMIC OF HATE

Nos está matando el odio. Cada día que pasa la sociedad uruguaya se divide en tribus –pequeñas, grandes, de todos los tamaños- que asientan su filosofía, si así pudiera llamarse a lo que genera sus actos, en la intolerancia, la falta de respeto por el que piensa distinto, el fanatismo, la discriminación, el racismo y la idea de dogma predominando por sobre el postulado.

Hate is killing us. Every day that passes, Uruguayan society is divided into tribes – small, large, of all sizes – that base their philosophy, if that is what generates their actions, on intolerance, lack of respect for those who think differently , fanaticism, discrimination, racism and the idea of ​​dogma prevailing over the postulate.

Cuanto más hablan todos de acuerdos generales para ayudar a salir al país de los problemas que lo aquejan, más acciones en contrario a esas palabras se alzan como tangible amenaza para los tiempos que vienen.

The more everyone talks about general agreements to help the country get out of the problems that afflict it, the more actions contrary to those words rise up as a tangible threat for the times to come.

Incluso, la situación tiene un lado gracioso: cuando uno habla de practicar el libre pensamiento crítico, nadie admite que hace todo lo contrario; la enorme mayoría se limita a una separación elemental pero que no necesita de explicaciones demasiado complicadas: yo pienso así, y los que piensan lo mismo pueden ser mis amigos o compañeros de ruta, con ellos puedo compartir un café, hacer chistes para la risa general sobre lo que ocurre alrededor y acordar sobre quiénes son los culpables y qué hay que hacer; obviamente, los que piensan de otro modo llevan el uniforme de enemigos y nada de lo que digan o hagan cambiará la creciente antipatía y aversión que por ellos siente esa mayoría.

Even the situation has a funny side: when one talks about practicing free critical thinking, nobody admits that he does the opposite; the vast majority is limited to an elementary separation but that does not need too complicated explanations: I think like this, and those who think the same can be my friends or fellow travelers, with them I can share a coffee, make jokes for general laughter about what is happening around and agree on who is to blame and what needs to be done; obviously, those who think otherwise wear the uniform of enemies and nothing they say or do will change the growing antipathy and aversion that the majority feels for them.

Este es el escenario, el contexto, realmente penoso, donde los políticos de un lado y otro y los ciudadanos responsables deberían encarar todos los proyectos alguna vez imaginados acerca de las dificultades por las que atravesamos todos: la reforma educativa, la reforma de la seguridad social, los sistemas policiales de prevención y represión, la pobreza y los planes de vivienda, entre tantos otros.

This is the scenario, the context, really painful, where politicians from one side and another and responsible citizens should face all the projects ever imagined about the difficulties we are all going through: educational reform, security reform social security, police prevention and repression systems, poverty and housing plans, among many others.

Hay unas circunstancias muy tristes e inquietantes aquí nomás, cerca, en la Argentina, que debieran inducirnos a reflexionar e impulsar un cambio de actitud. En el vecino país se está cerca de una gran explosión social por haber adquirido allí esta epidemia de odio que nos afecta dimensiones realmente de catástrofe.

There are some very sad and disturbing circumstances right here, nearby, in Argentina, which should lead us to reflect and promote a change of attitude. In the neighboring country we are close to a great social explosion for having acquired there this epidemic of hatred that affects us truly catastrophic dimensions.

Sin embargo, todo indica que, otra vez, la mayoría está haciendo de esas circunstancias unas lecturas muy equivocadas.

However, everything indicates that, once again, the majority is making very wrong readings of these circumstances.

Hay una maravillosa frase de Bertrand Russell, que salta sobre las ambiciones de poder –que existen, no las niega, pero las corre un momento para darnos otra visión, que ojalá todos entendieran en su verdadera dimensión: “En nuestra vida cotidiana nos asaltan las irritaciones, las preocupaciones, las frustraciones. Nos hallamos encadenados con excesiva presteza a pensamientos de lo que parece obstructivo en nuestro contorno inmediato. Pero es posible, y hombres auténticamente sabios han demostrado esa posibilidad, vivir en un mundo mental tan amplio que las vejaciones de la vida cotidiana lleguen a parecen triviales y los propósitos que agitan nuestras emociones más profundas adopten algo de la inmensidad de nuestras contemplaciones cósmicas. Unos pueden conseguirlo en mayor grado, otro solo en menor grado, pero todo el que se interese por ello puede lograrlo hasta cierto punto y, logrado el éxito, aun parcial, en esto, conquistarán una clase de paz que no pondrá trabas a la actividad, pero le quitará turbulencia”.

There is a wonderful phrase by Bertrand Russell, which jumps on the ambitions of power -which exist, he does not deny them, but he skips them for a moment to give us another vision, which I hope everyone understands in its true dimension: «In our daily lives we are assaulted by the irritations, worries, frustrations. We find ourselves chained too readily to thoughts of what seems obstructive in our immediate surroundings. But it is possible, and genuinely wise men have shown that it is possible, to live in a mental world so vast that the vexations of everyday life come to seem trivial and the purposes that stir our deepest emotions take on something of the immensity of our cosmic contemplations. Some can achieve it to a greater degree, another only to a lesser degree, but everyone who is interested in it can achieve it to a certain extent and, having achieved success, even partial, in this, they will achieve a kind of peace that will not hinder activity. , but it will take away turbulence”.

Ahí nace, según mi parecer, la sabiduría. Con ella se abrirá una perspectiva de paz y bienestar. Pero si la rechazamos –es decir, no abrimos la mente al desarrollo del libre pensamiento crítico que no implica una derrota para las convicciones de nadie- estaremos dando un paso más hacia un desastre irreversible.   

That is where, in my opinion, wisdom is born. With it, a perspective of peace and well-being will open. But if we reject it – that is, we do not open our minds to the development of free critical thought that does not imply a defeat for anyone’s convictions – we will be taking another step towards an irreversible disaster.

Está claro que la mayor responsabilidad radica en los políticos y en los intelectuales –aquellos porque sin un acuerdo entre oficialismo y oposición no hay sino un callejón sin salida, y éstos porque entre sus responsabilidades debería figurar, siempre, el impulso del progreso de las ideas libres y asentadas en una suerte de agnosticismo  del pensamiento completamente alejado del dogma.

It is clear that the greatest responsibility lies with politicians and intellectuals – those because without an agreement between the ruling party and the opposition there is nothing but a dead end, and these because among their responsibilities should always be the promotion of the progress of ideas free and settled in a kind of agnosticism of thought completely removed from dogma.

Las señales que nos están llegando desde muy cerca, más lo que ocurre en el patio o el fondo de nuestra casa, deberían empujarnos al esfuerzo por lograr la transformación necesaria.

The signals that are reaching us from very close, plus what is happening in the patio or the back of our house, should push us to make the effort to achieve the necessary transformation.
