CELEBREMOS LA POESIA CON WALT WHITMAN

WALT Whitman was born on May 31, 1819 in West Hills, New York United States – He died on March 26, 1892 in Camden New Jersey United States). Great Poet, considered the great representative of free verse and one of the most influential writers in the North American canon. The son of a Dutch mother and a British father, he was the second of nine siblings from a family with few financial resources. He went to school only occasionally and soon had to start working, first, despite his scant academic training, as an itinerant teacher, and later in a printing press, which was where his love for journalism was awakened, an interest that led him to work in various newspapers and magazines. Later he was appointed director of the Brooklyn Eagle in 1846, in which he lasted only two years due to his disagreement with the openly pro-slavery line defended by the newspaper.

WALT Whitman nació el 31/05/1819 en West Hills, New York Estados Unidos – Falleció el 26/03/1892 en Camden New Jersey Estados Unidos). Gran Poeta, considerado el gran representante del verso libre y uno de los escritores más influyentes del canon norteamericano. Hijo de madre holandesa y padre británico, fue el segundo de nueve hermanos de una familia con escasos recursos económicos. Pasó sólo ocasionalmente por la escuela y pronto tuvo que empezar a trabajar, primero, y a pesar de su escasa formación académica, como maestro itinerante, y más tarde en una imprenta que fue donde se le despierta su afición por el periodismo, interés que le llevó a trabajar en varios diarios y revistas. Posteriormente fue nombrado director del Brooklyn Eagle en 1846, en el que duró solo dos años por su inconformidad con la línea abiertamente pro esclavista defendida por el periódico.

His fondness for opera (a genre that influences his poetic work) allowed him to coincide on an opening night with a leader of the New Orleans newspaper Crescent, who convinced him to leave New York and accept an offer to work at the newspaper. In 1848, he had the opportunity to contemplate a reality, that of the provinces, totally unknown to him and that, ultimately, would be decisive for his future career since, back to New York a few months later, he abandoned journalism to give himself completely to to write.

Su afición por la ópera (género que influye en su obra poética) le permitió coincidir en una noche de estreno con un dirigente del periódico de Nueva Orleans Crescent, quien lo convenció para que dejara Nueva York y aceptase una oferta para trabajar en el diario. En 1848, tuvo la oportunidad de contemplar una realidad, la de provincias, para él totalmente desconocida y que, en definitiva, sería decisiva para su carrera futura ya que de regreso a New York unos meses después, abandonó el periodismo para entregarse por completo a escribir.

He was censored and criticized for his book Leaves of Grass, described as obscene and pornographic within its time for containing explicit references to the writer’s homosexuality or bisexuality reason why it did not see the light until 1855. This first edition consisted of twelve poems, all of them untitled, and it was Whitman himself who was in charge of editing it and taking it to the press. Of the 1,000 copies in the print run, Whitman sold few and gave most away, one of them to Ralph Waldo Emerson, an important figure on the American literary scene and his first admirer.His criticism, very positive, motivated Whitman to continue writing, despite his ruinous financial situation and the null impact that, in general, his poems had had. In 1856 the second edition appeared, and four years later the third, which he expanded with a presentation poem and a farewell poem.

Fue censurado y criticado por su libro Hojas de hierba (Leaves of grass), calificado como obsceno y pornográfico dentro de su época por contener referencias explícitas a la homosexualidad o bisexualidad del escritor, por lo que no vió la luz hasta 1855. Esta primera edición constaba de doce poemas, todos ellos sin título, y fue el propio Whitman quien se encargó de editarla y de llevarla a la imprenta. De los mil ejemplares de la tirada, Whitman vendió pocos y regaló la mayoría, uno de ellos a Ralph Waldo Emerson importante figura de la escena literaria estadounidense y su primer admirador. Su crítica, muy positiva, motivó a Whitman para seguir escribiendo, a pesar de su ruinosa situación económica y de la nula repercusión que, en general, habían tenido sus poemas. En 1856 apareció la segunda edición, y cuatro años más tarde la tercera, que amplió con un poema de presentación y otro de despedida.

Whitman was the first poet to experience the possibilities of free verse, using a simple language close to prose, while creating a new mythology for the young nation of the United States according to the postulates of «emerging Americanism.»

Fue un autor polémico que hizo gala de llevar una vida muy intensa ya que fue poeta, enfermero, voluntario, ensayista, periodista, humanista….

The poems of this author are vigorous and aggressive in spirit, in which he used everyday elements as an expression of the eternal. He has recurring themes among his verses such as sex, man, the body, religion, animals or geography. Among his virtues stands out with his lyrics his constant attitude of joy, emotions that he continually reveals in his poems, giving them something more peculiar life and style. One could perceive in each of his writings his objective, which was to give dignity to all people, something totally unusual in the era in which Humanism was marked.

Destaca entre sus virtudes con sus letras su constante actitud de alegria emociones que deja traslucir continuamente en sus poemas que les da vida y estilo algo más peculiar. Se podia percibir en cada uno de sus escritos su objetivo que era el darle dignidad a todas las personas, algo totalmente insólito en la época en la que se marcaba el Humanismo.
