CHAPALEANDO BARRO/Splashing Mud

Carezco de las dudosas virtudes de un adivino, así que ignoro si se alcanzarán las firmas de ciudadanos requeridas por la Corte Electoral Uruguaya para habilitar una consulta popular por la eventual derogación de ciento treinta y cinco artículos de la zarandeada Ley de Urgente Consideración.

I lack the dubious virtues of a fortune teller, so I do not know if the signatures of citizens required by the Electoral Court Uruguayan to enable a popular consultation will be reached for the eventual repeal of one hundred and thirty-five articles of the shaken Law of Urgent Consideration.

Su recolección, impulsada principalmente por la llamada “central obrera uruguaya”, es un derecho constitucional. Respetarlo significa la reafirmación de vivir en una república democrática.

Its collection, promoted mainly by the so-called “Uruguayan labor union”, is a constitutional right. Respecting it means reaffirming living in a democratic republic.

Hasta aquí todo es claro –incluyendo mi ignorancia del futuro del recurso planteado- y no parece necesario añadir nada más.

Cosa distinta son los vaivenes que viene exhibiendo la campaña de los promotores de esa hipotética derogación, a la búsqueda de las firmas requeridas.

Hoy siento que han empujado a la sociedad no sólo a una polarización política, sino, por medio de los enunciados propagandísticos, a que chapaleemos en el barro.

El primer pecado de los burócratas del PIT-CNT ha sido no dar el paso inicial seguros de que, en los alrededores de su pensamiento, no surgirían dudas cuando no disidencias sustantivas. ¿Un ejemplo? El mismísimo Frente Amplio. Muchos de sus legisladores votaron en el Parlamento varios de los artículos de esta ley y –algunos de modo radical, otros de forma sinuosa, tal vez para no salpicarse- han manifestado su descontento o incomodidad con el empujón derogatorio encabezado por Pereira, Abdala y compañía, juntos a unas cuantas “organizaciones sociales” sólo interesadas en bombos, banderas y movilizaciones callejeras a los gritos.

The first sin of the PIT-CNT bureaucrats has been not to take the initial step, sure that, in the surroundings of their thinking, doubts would not arise if not substantive dissidents. An example? Pero pecaron, en reiteración real, una segunda vez que no se ha detenido y se extiende en el tiempo, construyendo una seguidilla mentirosa de enunciados, sólo enunciados, expresados en múltiples ocasiones. Por ejemplo: “Nos quieren quitar la libertad y los derechos”; “hay que luchar contra el hambre y la pobreza y para que haya trabajo”; “no a la prepotencia autoritaria de la derecha conservadora”; “por no repetir los horrores del pasado”, etcétera.

But they sinned, in real reiteration, a second time that has not stopped and extends over time, building a lying string of statements, only statements, expressed on multiple occasions. For example: «They want to take away our freedom and rights»; «We must fight against hunger and poverty and for there to be work»; «No to the authoritarian arrogance of the conservative right»; «For not repeating the horrors of the past,» and so on.

Ciertamente, esto lleva a preguntarse en base a qué información –no enunciado, no proclama chatarra harto conocida- todo aquel ciudadano que firma por la derogación de la LUC conoce y comprende los alcances de cada uno de los ciento treinta y cinco artículos cuestionados, muchos de los cuales, lo repito, fueron votados por sus propios representantes legislativos.

Certainly, this leads to wondering based on what information – not stated, not proclaimed junk that is well known – all those citizens who sign for the repeal of the LUC know and understand the scope of each one of the one hundred thirty-five questioned articles, many of which, I repeat, were voted on by their own legislative representatives.

¿Sería un agravio moral o intelectual, o un engreimiento cultural, siquiera sospechar que la enorme mayoría de los suscritores de las papeletas no tienen la menor idea, ni tan solo aproximada, del contenido de lo que pretenden rechazar? Es decir, que su firma está sustentada en meros dogmatismos políticos, en prejuicios arraigados durante años y exacerbados cuando se los proyecta hacia tiempos electorales por venir.

Would it be a moral or intellectual offense, or a cultural conceit, even to suspect that the vast majority of the subscribers of the ballot papers have no idea, not even an approximate idea, of the content of what they intend to reject? That is to say, that his signature is based on mere political dogmatisms, on prejudices rooted for years and exacerbated when they are projected towards electoral times to come.

No. Claro que no hay agravio ni engreimiento.

Basta advertir las características de la campaña publicitaria de los promotores, su cinismo, su intencional distracción de lo esencial, las críticas que durante los últimos días, unos días de imbecilidad atronadora, han caído sobre ellos no únicamente del oficialismo sino de connotados militantes y hasta dirigentes de la coalición opositora, el Frente Amplio.

It is enough to note the characteristics of the promoters’ advertising campaign, their cynicism, their intentional distraction from what is essential, the criticisms that in recent days, a few days of thunderous imbecility, have fallen on them not only from the ruling party but also from notorious militants and even leaders of the opposition coalition, the Broad Front.

Y basta decir, con absoluta honestidad intelectual, que yo mismo, como muchos otros periodistas –o sea las personas que tenemos, por fuera del chapaleo en el barro- la trascendente responsabilidad de informar con imparcialidad, tampoco conocemos en detalle esos ciento treinta y cinco artículos y no estoy seguro de que podamos opinar con convicción profesional acerca de sus consecuencias.

And it is enough to say, with absolute intellectual honesty, that I myself, like many other journalists -that is, the people we have, outside of the mud splashing- the transcendent responsibility to report impartially, we do not know in detail those one hundred thirty-five articles and I am not sure we can have professional conviction about their consequences.

Sí, el texto completo está al alcance de cualquiera. Pero me gustaría saber quién lo ha leído, lo ha investigado sin sentirse militante o lo ha contrastado con fuentes confiables que le permitan trasladar a la opinión pública una información que deje tranquila a su conciencia, más allá de saber todos, como lo sabemos, que se trata de un asunto lleno de matices y con inexorables divergencias sobre lo que podrá ocurrir tanto si la ley continúa firme como si es parcialmente derogada.

Yes, the full text is available to anyone. But I would like to know who has read it, investigated it without feeling militant or has contrasted it with reliable sources that allow them to convey information to public opinion that leaves their conscience calm, beyond everyone knowing, as we know, that It is a matter full of nuances and with inexorable divergences on what may happen whether the law remains firm or if it is partially repealed.

Me pregunto, de nuevo, en qué se basa la actitud de cada ciudadano que firma por la derogación o se niega a hacerlo. Porque quiero dejar transparente el contexto: nada de maniqueísmos; ni aquel es el malo ni éste el bueno.

I wonder, again, what is the basis for the attitude of each citizen who signs for the repeal or refuses to do so. Because I want to make the context transparent: no Manichaeism; neither is that the bad nor this the good.

Lo esencial discurre por la capacidad de una sociedad para dirimir debidamente preparada asuntos de semejante envergadura, en la limpieza de las armas retóricas usadas por promotores y opositores a la consulta popular y en salir del barro lo antes posible, dejando de chapalear como idiotas.   

 

The essential thing runs through the ability of a society to settle properly prepared matters of such magnitude, in cleaning up the rhetorical weapons used by promoters and opponents of the popular consultation and in getting out of the mud as soon as possible, stopping splashing around like idiots.
