Bueno. Acabaron el palabrerío, las recorridas repitiendo las mismas cosas, el patético debate, la incertidumbre.

Well. The chatter ended, the tours repeating the same things, the pathetic debate, the uncertainty.

La ciudadanía dio su veredicto y hay un nuevo gobierno: ha vuelto al poder una coalición -porque lo es, no estoy ironizando-, el Frente Amplio, tal como indicaban la mayoría de las encuestas. ¡Al fin, chicos, acertaron en malón!

The citizens gave their verdict and there is a new government: a coalition has returned to power – because it is, I am not being ironic -, the Frente Amplio, as the majority of the polls indicated. Finally, guys, you got it wrong!

El asunto es ahora, al menos para los contribuyentes libre pensadores como yo, aguardar, desde los primeros pasos, hacia dónde arranca este tren de la izquierda, dado -entre otras cosas- que no tendrá mayoría parlamentaria.

The issue now is, at least for free-thinking contributors like me, to wait, from the first steps, where this train of the left will take off, given – among other things – that it will not have a parliamentary majority.

Es verdad. Lo que más resonó entre gente como uno, fue la coincidencia a la segura convocatoria a un diálogo que permita el necesario desarrollo social, educativo, cultural y económico de una sociedad aún sumida en problemas que, siguiendo el rumbo que van tomando las grandes potencias que nos influyen, permanecen y nos avergüenzan.

It’s true. What resonated most among people like us was the coincidence of the sure call for a dialogue that allows the necessary social, educational, cultural and economic development of a society still mired in problems that, following the course taken by the great powers that They influence us, they remain and they embarrass us.

Hasta que no asuma y mueva su primera pieza el nuevo presidente, Yamandú Orsi, sólo cobran vida las especulaciones.

Until the new president, Yamandú Orsi, takes office and moves his first piece, only speculations come to life.

Notoriamente, el país necesita abordar los deberes pendientes, que son unos cuantos y requerirían soluciones inmediatas o progresivas, pero soluciones al fin.

Sólo a título de síntesis: la crisis de la Seguridad Social, la reforma -nunca entendida por mí, lo repito a quienes la dieron por resuelta poco tiempo atrás- de la educación, el fortalecimiento de la cultura de lo racional y de la benevolencia, la atención de la pobreza, el desempleo y la situación de la niñez marginal, así como de la seguridad y no me refiero sólo a la lucha contra el narcotráfico.

Just as a summary: the Social Security crisis, the reform – never understood by me, I repeat to those who considered it resolved a short time ago – of education, the strengthening of the culture of rationality and benevolence, attention to poverty, unemployment and the situation of marginal children, as well as security and I am not just referring to the fight against drug trafficking.

Desde hoy, y tal vez a muchos les parezca un error de mi parte, me ha ganado cierto escepticismo acerca de esa convocatoria a un diálogo franco, sincero, entre las dos coaliciones que compitieron. Ojalá, lo quiero realmente, me equivoque.

Since today, and perhaps to many it may seem like a mistake on my part, I have gained a certain skepticism about this call for a frank, sincere dialogue between the two coalitions that competed. I hope, I really want it, I’m wrong.

Finalmente, hay un punto que me parece fundamental por su fortísima influencia, al menos hipotética, en nuestro futuro: las relaciones internacionales.

Finally, there is a point that seems fundamental to me due to its very strong influence, at least hypothetical, on our future: international relations.

Espero que el nuevo gobierno tenga claro que no hay mejor política exterior que despojar a la relación con otros países de toda ideología, de todo fanatismo y de cualquier dogma. Buenas relaciones con todos los mercados esenciales para nosotros -Estados Unidos, China, la Unión Europea, etcétera- para ampliar la inversión exterior, alcanzar el equilibrio fiscal y generar empleo sustentable, del mismo que abrir nuevos mercados para la producción nacional.

I hope that the new government is clear that there is no better foreign policy than to strip the relationship with other countries of all ideology, all fanaticism and any dogma. Good relations with all essential markets for us – the United States, China, the European Union, etc. – to expand foreign investment, achieve fiscal balance and generate sustainable employment, as well as open new markets for national production.

Únicamente un detalle final, que, dicho lo anterior, aparece en mi mente como una excepción.

Just one final detail, which, having said the above, appears in my mind as an exception.

Tiemblo, de todo corazón y pediré disculpas si me equivoco, ante la posibilidad de que, como parte de la política exterior, a quien sea se le ocurra volver a establecer relaciones -del modo que se tuvieron antes- con Venezuela.

I tremble, with all my heart, and I will apologize if I am wrong, at the possibility that, as part of foreign policy, whoever decides to re-establish relations – in the way they were had before – with Venezuela.

Es un caso aparte, con historia previa deplorable y realidad actual espantosa.

It is a separate case, with a deplorable previous history and a frightening current reality.
