Es cosa sabida que los filósofos, como los sicólogos, los sacerdotes y los políticos, siempre rodeados de filas de poetas y locos que los acarician casi con lascivia, inventan palabras.

It is a known fact that philosophers, like psychologists, priests and politicians, always surrounded by ranks of poets and madmen who caress them almost lasciviously, invent words.

¿Los políticos? No. Ellos se ocupan de la manipulación de relatos, de la conveniente deformación de la realidad y de llevar al terreno resbaladizo, inseguro de lo emotivo a los ciudadanos, retaceándoles la posibilidad de pensar.

The politicians? No. They deal with the manipulation of stories, the convenient distortion of reality and taking citizens to slippery terrain, unsure of emotions, denying them the possibility of thinking.

Tomás Abraham, un filósofo contemporáneo, ciertamente provocador, estaba convencido de que la palabra “contraopinión” existe y que no quiere decir opinar en contra, sino describe un proceso de “ventilación” indispensable para que todo ser humano normal pueda formar su propio juicio acerca de lo que ocurre y de cuál es la responsabilidad de las personas públicas, y no sólo de recibir y dar por bueno lo que le transmiten por ejemplo los candidatos y, muchas veces –es triste pero realista reconocerlo-, los medios de comunicación.

Tomás Abraham, a contemporary philosopher, certainly provocative, was convinced that the word “counter-opinion” exists and that it does not mean giving an opinion against, but rather describes a process of “ventilation” essential for every normal human being to form their own judgment about of what happens and what is the responsibility of public people, and not only of receiving and accepting what is transmitted to them by, for example, the candidates and, many times – it is sad but realistic to admit it – the media.

Si siguiésemos esa sentencia de Abraham, tener una idea propia, o sea pensar por sí mismo, sería una disciplina aeróbica. Llevan bastante humor los ejemplos que el filósofo usa para fundar su teoría: habría que ser muy sociable, habría que hacer largas caminatas, hasta recorridas por lugares escarpados, para ventilar el cerebro y limpiarlo que toda aquella maleza que estorba. En otras palabras, cuanto más oxígeno ingrese al organismo más libertad de pensamiento crítico habría, extremo que, escribió este buen hombre, cualquier neurólogo de nota podría aceptar.

If we followed that sentence of Abraham, having one’s own idea, that is, thinking for oneself, would be an aerobic discipline. The examples that the philosopher uses to base his theory are quite humorous: you would have to be very sociable, you would have to take long walks, even hikes through steep places, to ventilate your brain and clean it of all that weeds that get in the way. In other words, the more oxygen enters the body, the more freedom of critical thinking there would be, a point that, this good man wrote, any notable neurologist could accept.

Esta oxigenación serviría para destruir a una sociedad malsana donde sobreabunda de modo obsceno la información no contrastada, no investigada, no pensada con la razón propia y el uso del análisis lógico cuando no del simple sentido común.

This oxygenation would serve to destroy an unhealthy society where there is an obscene overabundance of information that is not contrasted, not investigated, not thought out with one’s own reason and the use of logical analysis if not simple common sense.

Cercanos a las internas, puestas en duda la mayoría de las intenciones de los políticos sobre concertaciones benéficas para toda la sociedad, parece tarea harto complicada ventilar las cabecitas –primero, obvio, de los candidatos y paralelamente de cada uno de nosotros si es que se quiere construir este “círculo virtuoso”- y permitir que haya, para un lado y para otro, puesto que no se trata de unanimidades, acciones que surjan de la reflexión y no de la ignorancia o el fanatismo.

Close to the internal ones, with most of the politicians’ intentions regarding beneficial agreements for the entire society being questioned, it seems a very complicated task to ventilate the little heads – first, obviously, of the candidates and in parallel of each one of us if we are wants to build this “virtuous circle” – and allow there to be, on one side and the other, since it is not about unanimity, actions that arise from reflection and not from ignorance or fanaticism.

Opinar luego de haber abierto la mente al aire limpio del pensamiento libre, dejando a un lado a las creencias arraigadas.

Give your opinion after having opened your mind to the clean air of free thought, leaving aside deep-rooted beliefs.

Según Abraham, hemos pasado demasiado tiempo en manos de un poder político cuyo interés es, básicamente, no perder el control de lo que se dice y se muestra.

According to Abraham, we have spent too much time in the hands of a political power whose interest is, basically, not to lose control of what is said and shown.

Estoy de acuerdo. Pero también tiemblo al pensar en todo lo que deberíamos cambiar para defender mejor nuestra libertad. La verdadera, la interior.

I agree. But I also tremble to think of everything we should change to better defend our freedom. The real one, the inner one.

Finalmente, antes de aconsejarle, lector, que salga a caminar por la rambla, a correr por los vericuetos del Prado, a utilizar aparatos, ¡no químicos, por favor!, energéticos o a subir a la fortaleza del Cerro, le pediría que piense que esta teoría filosófica, al menos entre los uruguayos, ya agujereó más de una de sus medias.

Finally, before advising you, the reader, to go out for a walk along the promenade, to run through the twists and turns of the Prado, to use energy devices (not chemicals, please!), or to climb the Cerro fortress, I would ask you to think that This philosophical theory, at least among Uruguayans, has already made a hole in more than one of their socks.

Nadie podría decir que algunos políticos no ha intentado la oxigenación de la “contraopinión” con la tropezada construcción de otro proyecto de Ley de Medios.

No one could say that some politicians have not attempted to oxygenate the “counter-opinion” with the stumbled construction of another Media Law project.

Y, por desgracia, es de una claridad meridiana que su ejemplo le pega un mazazo a la cabeza del pobre Abraham y su teoría.

And, unfortunately, it is crystal clear that his example hits the head of poor Abraham and his theory with a hammer.

Escrito lo cual comunico que pasaré una semana en retiro espiritual a ver si el espíritu de Maquiavelo me hace ver la luz.
