THE THINKER: THE SPOON DUCK

Pasa a causa de la humedad.

It happens because of humidity.

Ya lo aseguró Ramis, hace tiempo, pero no le hice caso entonces; es que tiene un sentido del humor tan esquizofrénico que muchas veces me convence a la primera frase y a la segunda me sume en dudas atroces.

Ramis already assured it, a long time ago, but I didn’t pay attention to him then; The thing is that he has such a schizophrenic sense of humor that he often convinces me with the first sentence and the second he throws me into atrocious doubts.

Dice que la humedad afecta a las neuronas y es por eso que, a veces, hasta a los grandes pensadores como uno, les despierta imágenes extrañas para explicar la realidad que yo entiendo pueden confundir a algunos no iniciados. Sobre todo, la humedad incidiría al intento de explicar ciertas realidades a través de metáforas que tienen que ver con la fauna, sea autóctona o no.

He says that humidity affects neurons and that is why, sometimes, even great thinkers like you, it awakens strange images to explain reality that I understand can confuse some uninitiated people. Above all, humidity would affect the attempt to explain certain realities through metaphors that have to do with fauna, whether native or not.

Por ejemplo, yo creo que hoy todo depende del comportamiento del llamado “pato cuchara”.

For example, I believe that today everything depends on the behavior of the so-called “spoon duck.”

Es originario de América del Sur y tiene un porte amistoso, como si quisiese imitar al pato real, que existe, además del pavo, y hay muy pocos de su especie aunque no se considera que esté en extinción, sino que su comportamiento y lugares que habita hacen difícil su captura y encierro en un zoológico. Porque, pese a aquella supuesta imitación referida, el pato cuchara no es un epígono –es decir que no sigue los hábitos generalizados en su familia o en otras similares- sino que, dicho en lenguaje burdo, “se juega la suya”. Es más: se ha probado que su comportamiento social, incluyendo el lenguaje nupcial, sigue características que son diferentes a la mayoría de los patos nadadores, aunque por la escasa posibilidad de estudiarlo en cautiverio, no se conocen en detalle. Se sabe, esto sí, que la cerceta carretona, rebelde, mal arreada, tiene un parentesco con el pato cuchara, lejano pero confirmado. Es como si uno pensara en nuestra aldea, en términos políticos, como un lago, y ubicara cercanos a los de Asamblea Uruguay, a los bolches y a ese resto con influencia de un pato grande y en su momento influyente llamado Seregni.

It is native to South America and has a friendly demeanor, as if it wanted to imitate the mallard, which exists, in addition to the turkey, and there are very few of its species although it is not considered to be in extinction, but rather its behavior and places that inhabits make it difficult to capture and confine them in a zoo. Because, despite that supposed imitation referred to, the spoonbill is not an epigone – that is, it does not follow the generalized habits in its family or similar ones – but, in crude language, «it plays its own game.» What’s more: it has been proven that their social behavior, including nuptial language, follows characteristics that are different from most swimming ducks, although due to the limited possibility of studying it in captivity, they are not known in detail. It is known, however, that the rebellious, poorly herded teal has a relationship with the shoveler, distant but confirmed. It is as if one thought of our village, in political terms, as a lake, and located close to those of the Uruguay Assembly, the Bolches and that rest with the influence of a large and once influential duck called Seregni.

Según mi sueño -¿no lo dije antes?-, porque esto lo he soñado y sólo reflexionado al respecto después, hay un factor incidente: el pato cuchara soberbio ha tenido que luchar con denuedo para sobrevivir. Desde hace un tiempo abundan unos toscos, barbudos y cínicos cazadores que tratan de capturarlo, en un absurdo intento de domesticarlo y obligarlo a nadar siempre en cierta dirección. Se autodenominan “Los de la barra” y no tienen autorización para portar armas ni de la Asociación del Rifle de los Estados Unidos, pero igual arrancaron.

According to my dream – didn’t I say it before? – because I dreamed this and only reflected on it afterwards, there is an incidental factor: the superb spoonbill has had to fight bravely to survive. For some time now, there have been many crude, bearded and cynical hunters who have tried to capture it, in an absurd attempt to tame it and force it to always swim in a certain direction. They call themselves “Those from the bar” and do not have authorization to carry weapons or the United States Rifle Association, but they started anyway.

Hay una característica del buscado pato cuchara que inquieta sobremanera a “Los de la barra”: a diferencia de otros patos –incluso el pato rabudo, el pato silbón y el pato mandarín, éste con fuertes lazos entre los congéneres que habitan Beijing- no posee la costumbre de beber en señal de paz.

There is a characteristic of the sought-after shovel duck that greatly worries “Those at the bar”: unlike other ducks – including the pintail duck, the widgeon duck and the mandarin duck, this one with strong ties among its conspecifics that inhabit Beijing – does not have the custom of drinking as a sign of peace.

No es que sea agresivo. Se cuida. Es abstemio o, al menos, lo aparenta. Y eso, a los que le dije, lector, los calienta más.

It’s not that he’s aggressive. Take care. He is teetotal or, at least, he appears to be. And that, to those I told you, reader, warms you up more.

Descrito de otro modo, el pato cuchara no le da bola a nadie que no sea él mismo, aunque se incline ante el paso del pato real y por ahora mantengan los cazadores, en laberintos intrincados de los que sólo él sabe salir. Según zoólogos consultados, es su mecanismo de defensa más efectivo y, si muere, lo hará escudándose en él.

Described in another way, the shovel duck does not give a damn to anyone other than itself, even if it bows before the passage of the mallard and for now the hunters keep it in intricate labyrinths from which only it knows how to get out. According to zoologists consulted, it is their most effective defense mechanism and, if they die, they will do so by hiding behind it.

Ahora bien, el pato cuchara es caprichoso -aunque disfrace su terquedad con ciertos modos serenos- y no expresa con claridad su instinto de apareamiento como los otros patos. Eso es porque, sentencian los entendidos, tiene pretensiones de pelear y ganar como sea el espacio del pato real. Claro, eso hace que, tal como vienen las cosas en el lago, bastante revueltas, al fin se vea obligado, utilizando el movimiento de “bombeo”, menos común en otras especies, a iniciar y concretar finalmente el apareamiento.

Now, the shoveler is capricious – although it disguises its stubbornness with certain serene ways – and does not clearly express its mating instinct like other ducks. That is because, experts say, he intends to fight and win the real duck’s space in any way possible. Of course, that means that, as things are quite turbulent in the lake, he is finally forced, using the “pumping” movement, less common in other species, to finally initiate and complete mating.

Dos son más que uno, ¿no? Incluso entre patos cuchara.

Two are more than one, right? Even among shovelers.

Finalmente, se ha advertido en esta huidiza ave palmípeda, un parloteo no ruidoso sino silbante, que usa también como escudo cuando cree que crece el peligro que le acecha insistente.

Finally, it has been noticed in this elusive palmiped bird, a chatter that is not noisy but whistling, which it also uses as a shield when it believes that the danger that lurks insistently grows.

Mezclando mucho las cosas –por eso le confesé, mi amigo, desde el principio, que la humedad había afectado mis neuronas-, pensé más audazmente: este pato cuchara está manejando a la aldea, cercado o no, en peligro real o no. Y, como viene la mano, crece el interés sobre él y el temor de que, por seguirlo, nos vayamos todos a pique, que es la forma aristocrática de decir irnos a la mierda.

Mixing things up a lot – that’s why I confessed to you, my friend, from the beginning, that the humidity had affected my neurons -, I thought more boldly: this spoonbill duck is leading the village, fenced or not, in real danger or not. And, as the hand comes, interest in him grows and the fear that, by following him, we will all go to hell, which is the aristocratic way of saying go to hell.

Ah, ah… Y ahí me aparecieron interrogaciones que saltaron la valla de la humedad y hasta a mis propias neuronas enfermas y lánguidas.

Ah, ah… And then questions appeared to me that jumped over the fence of humidity and even my own sick and languid neurons.

¿Y si el pato cuchara soberbio fuera un político relevante de una coalición que viene empujada con razón a favor en las encuestas?

What if the superb spoonbill was a relevant politician in a coalition that is rightly pushed in favor in the polls?

¿Y si fuera Yamandú Orsi, que anda a pelo de un personaje que pacientemente creó con sutileza?

What if it were Yamandú Orsi, who walks around with a character that he patiently created with subtlety?

¿Nos jugaríamos por el pato cuchara? ¿O por el éxito de sus hasta ahora frustrados cazadores, sonrientes pero envidiosos? ¿O, quizás, por alguna intervención drástica y final del pato real, en licencia médica pero muy atento?

Would we play for the spoon duck? Or for the success of his hitherto frustrated hunters, smiling but envious? Or, perhaps, by some drastic and final intervention by the mallard, on medical leave but very attentive?

¿Cree usted, lector, que todo es una metáfora desequilibrada que ha producido su gran pensador avasallado por la humedad?

Do you believe, reader, that everything is an unbalanced metaphor that your great thinker has produced, overwhelmed by humidity?
